In your opinion, the franchises that went down hill this gen?

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Dead or Alive, Marvel vs Capcom, Tales of, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Pokemon, and many more.

Final Fantasy. I can't believe we're still getting sequels to FF13, and we still have nothing about FF15. And I also can't believe how Square is milking the FF brand with each and every passing day.
It makes me sad and pissed off, because it is one of my favourite franchises, and SE is treating it in the worst possible way.

Mysterious Dungeon 2 and Pokemon Ranger 2 are probably the best spin-offs Pokemon has ever had. Real talk.

But Ranger 3 sucked, and Mysterious Dungeon 3DS doesn't sound so hot (that 144 roster!)

Mario is the only series that was improved over last generation. Twilight Princess can also count as last generation as I enjoyed that much more than Skyward Sword.

Oh I forgot Tales of Vesperia was great. Enjoyed it more than Abyss.

Worse
Resident Evil
Metal Gear
Final Fantasy
Devil May Cry (4 was good but not on 3's level)
Ninja Gaiden (2 was good, 3 was a disaster)
Star Ocean
Yakuza 2 is still the best in the series
Silent Hill

There are tons more that I can't think of too. This is one depressing generation that just needs to end.

I never played those spin offs but I'm quite tempted to play them now.

Pokemon Conquest was some fun stuff too.

In terms of gameplay?

The entire FPS genre. Seriously, where's my Halo 1/2? Where's my Turok 2: Seeds of Evil? Where's my Unreal Championship on OG Live?

Way off here buddy... You might be tired of the style, but Call of Duty was the GTA of this generation, the undisputed sucess.

It was the first generation where consoles could actually run a proper FPS game. FPS games last gen (outside of Halo) were clunky, ugly and always made you feel "this stuff should be for PC".

PSone era had multiple genre defining hits like MGS, GT, Tomb Raider and the generation also had stuff like Mario3d and Golden eye.

The following gen was defined by GTA

This gen? You have to say Call of Duty was the biggest hit. It influentiated a lot of other games and we can complain about just everything this gen, exept shooters: we had too many of them, good and bad.

MGS 4 work of art?

I...need to go lay down.

MGS4 was a Metal Gear fans dream.

I'm guessing you didn't play MGS1 or even 2 back in the day, but the nostalgia that MGS4 purposely invoked was insane.

It was a love letter to fans. Nano machines be damned.

Most of them, with the Japanese icons leading the way. Despite being let down by some big stinkers or gradually worn down from previous hype levels by a direction a series has taken which I find unappealing, I'm actually glad that so many have fallen from the lofty heights of their predecessors. Why? Because it will cause more people to be wary of sequels to previously well-received games, leading to more sequels and franchise installments needing to really fucking earn their sales and the heaps of continued praise for once-great properties. This will push for more new stuff instead of just reiterating so heavily with focus on better-looking and more bloated, like this generation has done far too much of. At least, that's my hope. This gen has definitely brought some of the most uninteresting and safest retail console gaming ever even while providing some all-time-highs, particularly on the digital distribution end.

Nostalgia is really all it had going for it, though. The series (and its fans) deserved so much more than that after the previous games. But I guess the fan service alone was enough for some.

It used incredible amounts on nostalgia to try and cover up the major gameplay flaws in ever chapter past 2 and the terrible story.
And failed.

And your accusation that someone who didn't like MGS4 must not have played MGS1 or 2 back in the day is absurd, if anything I feel the opposite. Most people who enjoyed MG 1,2 and MGS 1-3 should dislike MGS4 because it's simply not as good a game as any of them. The whole time I was playing MGS4 every time a nostalgic point happened like the bike chase or Shadow Moses I was just thinking "Wow, I wish I was playing those games instead of this."

that's certainly a unique viewpoint

I didn't think it was until I came on here and another message board.

It's hard stay serious now.

Huh?

Too obvious

I'm not trolling if that's what you think. I love how MGS4 go over every lingering plot thread and end it in a nice bow. Like the other poster said, it was a love letter to MGS fans everywhere and that last scene with
Big Boss
made the inner fanboy in me go crazy. I remember calling my cousin up and I was like, "Oh hell yeah!
BIG BOSS
IS BACK!" and he was like, "Word? Holy crap what's he saying!?" and I remember memorizing his entire lines and telling my cousin over the phone.

I like how RE5 took what made RE4 great and improved it and I like how RE6 tries to do its own thing and change up the formula. I call RE4, 5, and 6 the Holy Trinity of the RE series. I didn't like how the series played and handled before then.

I've played them all. Nostalgia isn't a good enough reason to say a game is good when the story is a mess and the gameplay falls apart after Act 2. Yeah it was cool going back to shadow moses, it was not cool fighting nothing but robots.

. Most people who enjoyed MG 1,2 and MGS 1-3 should dislike MGS4 because it's simply not as good a game as any of them. ."

Let's not get carried away here. There was nothing in MGS4 that stood out as bad to me compared to the others in the series. Just felt like a solid continuation of the franchise.

A painful one for me to admit is Metal Gear Solid.

Coming off of Snakeeater last gen and giving me MGS4 deflated me.

It gave me too much story that would have been more interesting left to question and not enough gameplay. I enjoyed it while I was playing it, but in hindsight a really weird experience.

Also, Resident Evil due to many of the same reasons as my distaste at MGS. You give me RE4 last gen but then RE5?! RE5 did everything it could to put me off to the series and did it well. I'm not interested in RE6 and have no gumption to play it.

I agree that there were major flaws, the first 2 acts are brilliant gameplay wise and can be played in so many ways, but they are too short, and the last traditional gameplay you get in the game. The tailing part was great the first time, but is NOT fun on multiple playthrough. Also SM, while amazing the first time is obviously not as thrilling the second time(especially due to enemy variety...). Pacing was the issue.

The story is debatable, I loved it, and I think it tied up as much as it could for how insane the story got starting with MGS2. Although I get that people didn't.

Also my "accusation" that he hadn't played them was not because he didn't like MGS4 but because he was too young when those games were released. Therefore someone new to the franchise obviously would not be as impacted by what amounted to uber fan service.

Kind of like the Gafer who just got caught up on the Halo franchise and was giving his opinions on it, but he youtubed the first game. There is something to be said from playing a franchise for a decade or more, and knowing what the game was at the time, vs catching up on it and playing dated entries with current day goggles on.

This has been the worst gen for Zelda ever. Even TP was better on the Gamecube.
Handheld Zelda has gone downhill.

Console Zelda has stayed the same or gotten better. Skyward Sword isn't the second coming but it's still a fantastic game on the level of TP. It's more balanced, anyway.

Also, TP was as good on the Wii as it was on GC. It just depends on what you prefer. Some people would take widescreen and IR controls over a controllable camera, for example. The "mirrored version" bit is completely neutral as it doesn't affect the game either way other than provide an alternative.

I literally cannot think of a franchise that got better this gen.

NBA 2k has improved considerably this gen. Right now, this is the best sports franchise imo.

Btw, shame on PES and NBA live, a horrible generation for them.

I don't think Grand Turismo declined this generation, I just think competition has caught up and in some ways surpassed it.

Being stagnant is not declining.

How does the gameplay falls apart after Act 2? For me it remained engaging to the very end.

Well I haven't played AC3 and DA2, but yes I would defend ME3 all day long... GoTY if not for H4.

But that's not what I was referring to. This is about franchises from last gen that got worse going into this gen. Like splinter cell.

ME, DA and AC are all franchises that did not exist last gen.

I didn't have as big an issue with ME3's ending as many, my problems laid elsewhere.

To be fair the title and OP don't say from last gen to this gen so I took it as meaning over the course of this gen, but obviously ignore some of my suggestions if needed.

While this is an opinion thread, taking a dump on MGS4 will be unpopular and rightly challenged. After all, the game won GAF goty and I believe GAF gotg awhile ago as well. I loved the game to pieces btw. Replayed it to the end twice, and my favorite acts dozens of times. The first playthrough of MGS4 was one of the most epic game experiences I've ever had with all the fan service moments. MGO was fun for a few weeks too. To each their own.

I loved the hell out of MGO up until the last half a year it was up. I even endured during those dark ages of lag switchers cheating the Survival mode.

Mario is the only franchise that I've played this gen that hasn't gotten fucked up. Everything else...yeah. Though not terrible, I can't say that any series has gotten better.
