In your opinion, the franchises that went down hill this gen?

The only series that I think actually improved this generation are Mario (3D), Red Dead and Team Fortress.

Why are people listing Metal Gear Solid?

Even if you didn't like Guns of the Patriots (which I very much did), Kojima released the video for Ground Zeroes, which looks absolutely amazing, Peace Walker was amazing, the HD collection is amazing, and by all accounts, Revengeance is going to be amazing. I haven't heard anything but praise from people who've played it. I don't get it.

I want reasons damnit!

If I sound butthur......well It's because I am.

Interesting choice, why would you say this?

A lot of reasons. They spent so much time seemingly doing very little to improve upon 4. Sure the game looks pretty, but they fucked up badly with importing old models for the non premium vehicles. They wasted a great opportunity for the best online racer, even now after numerous updates it is still shaky. That UI is one of the worst I have ever seen in a game. They broke the license system to religate it to essentially a pointless time trial mode. They filled it with crazy garbage like paint tokens. Who thought that was clever? They need to be fired.

Even though they made a great game, they fucked it up on so many levels it is beyond reason, given the time they had. GT 4 was a much better game, full of content, but streamlined and unclutered in a way 5 will never be.

Turok Evolution to Turok reboot is a great leap. Turok on 360 was a solid 8-8.5. Gets way too much hate here.

Now from n64 to last gen the series definitely went downhill.
OMG! I forgot this game even existed!

Was it released on PC? I wouldn't mind just trying it out if it's as decent as you say.

Halo -- starts off with the most underwhelming "AAA" game I've ever played in Halo 3. Slightly rebounds with a fucking spin-off in ODST. Comes back just a tad with Reach, and then drops like a rock again with Halo 4. Although 343i's first outing isn't nearly as disastrous and downright bad as Halo 3, it's still extremely disappointing.

GT5 is on par with GT4. Has some flaws, some great things, but in the end, it´s not downhill at all.

I guess many people are confusing this with how long did it take for the game to come out. Releasing in 2010 was the biggest problem, not the game itself.

As for Metal Gear, people seriously didn´t liked 4? I thought it was awesome in many ways, and i loved that game sans the weird online mode.

I'd disagree with most of those.

Really?

Forza 2 to Forza 4
Killzone to Killzone 2
Red Dead Revolver to Redemption
Turok Evolution to Turok
Battlefield Modern Combat to BFBC2 and BF3
Call of Duty: The Big Red One to CoD2 and MW
Far Cry Instincts to Far Cry 3
Deus Ex Invisible War to Deus Ex Human Revolution
Halo 2 to H3, ODST, Reach, 4
Fallout 2 to Fallout 3

Which of those games do you think is worse than the former?

Soul Calibur

I personally disagree with this one, soul calibur has progessively gotten worse for awhile now in just about every way other than maybe graphics, and the games we got this gen just are not as good as the ones we got last even more so if you count the dreamcast original as last gen.

wow, really disheartening to realize how many franchises have gotten worse since the launch of the 360 and ps3.

what do you guys this caused all this? too much focus on graphics? teams too large to manage properly? more importantly, is the next gen destined to follow down the same path of shittyness? what can be done to avoid this fate?

It used incredible amounts on nostalgia to try and cover up the major gameplay flaws in ever chapter past 2 and the terrible story.
And failed.

And your accusation that someone who didn't like MGS4 must not have played MGS1 or 2 back in the day is absurd, if anything I feel the opposite. Most people who enjoyed MG 1,2 and MGS 1-3 should dislike MGS4 because it's simply not as good a game as any of them. The whole time I was playing MGS4 every time a nostalgic point happened like the bike chase or Shadow Moses I was just thinking "Wow, I wish I was playing those games instead of this."
Bingo.

How do you make flaws with what little gameplay there was? It was barely a game.

Also, how could one possibly play MGS4 without having played the first two? It would be impossible. It's like picking up the Deathly Hollows and jamming away at it with no knowledge of The Philosopher's Stone or The Chamber of Secrets.

Ground Zeroes was just a video, unfortunately. Kojima is good at cooking up a trailer (albeit as overly dramatic and drawn out as they are), but MGS4 has put me off to his games.

HD collection doesn't count because those games were last gen. Peacewalker was good, but was on the PSP. :(

Really, your post has only reminded me of the other issue with MGS-- it's too bloated and suffers from Final Fantasy/Silent Hill syndrome. There are too many sequels, sub-sequels, side stories for anyone to bother to care that much.

Hate to say it, but Resident Evil. I happen to love 5, btw. But 6 is about as bi-polar as it gets. It fluctuates from good to bad and further down to abysmal so much that it is the very definition of a train wreck. The old adage of too many cooks with their hands in the stew never fit better.

SSX
Tony Hawk

These two stand out for me... loved both series on PS2.

GTA was redeemed by Gay Tony and still has V on the way.

4 is downhill from 2 and 3
Ground Zeroes is just a video
Peace Walker, while good, is downhill from 2 and 3
HD collection is 2 and 3
Who knows about Revengeance... looking forward to it but I can't imagine it'll be better than 2 or 3

I think it would be easier to ask about the ones that didn't get worse.

Mario
Pokémon
DK
Zelda (didn't necessarily get better, but I don't think it got worse. Of course, that's very subjective)

Yeah...that's about all I can think of.

EDIT: Rayman as well.

Trying to think of franchises that actually came out pretty well this generation

-King of Fighters XIII is the best KoF since '02.

-Tekken Tag Tournament 2 might be my favorite installment in the series, at least since the original Tag Tournament on PS2 almost 12 years ago.

-Street Fighter 4 turned out pretty well, as did Marvel vs Capcom 3. Everybody has their personal preferences for MvC2 or SF3, but by and large they were very successful sequels that reignited a spark in the FGC and continue to drive excitement in major fighting game tournaments across the nation.

-Mortal Kombat was the best 1-v-1 fighter in the series since UMK3, over 15 years ago.

Soooo yeah, not too bad for fighters >_>

I didn't think it was until I came on here and another message board.

Huh?

I like how RE5 took what made RE4 great and improved it and I like how RE6 tries to do its own thing and change up the formula. I call RE4, 5, and 6 the Holy Trinity of the RE series. I didn't like how the series played and handled before then.

Yes, your point of view is really singular. If a game is so vastly criticized, probably something of true there is; what exactly has improved RE6? It's completely confuse, the controls are tough to assimilate, the gameplay design not has a precise direction, it's a mix of the best selling product without a clear idea to where to go, I don't call it exactly an improvement, imho. About MGS 4 if the whole game was like the first 2 act, would been a masterpiece, but the 3rd act & the final act are a fucking joke, really unbearable. A pity, because could be so better.

Max Payne 2 is still my favorite, but I really enjoyed Max Payne 3 this year so I'm not too upset about that.

X-Com turned out to be pretty legit this year

edit: Pac-Man Championship Edition DX is the greatest Pac-Man of them all

Killzone - has gotten better but still not very good
Halo - the first is the best one and has never came back to it
Deus Ex- better than 2, worse than 1
Fallout - only played 3 and NV, can't compare them to the originals
Battlefield - gotten worse, BC2>BF3
Call of Duty - from before and after MW1? Yes. After that it gets murky.
Red Dead - only played RDR
Forza- only played Horizon

The others I haven't played at all.

FF wins obviously.

Pro Evo gets the Silver Award.

notable mention:
GTA (the PS2 era GTAs were some of the greatest games ever made, GTA IV was still good, but did not live up to the expectations. GTA V could be the redemption though).

everyonefdu8n.gif

Ha, I was going to post this too. Even some franchises that originated in this gen managed to get worse in newer releases.

Probably, the worst victim of this gen is Metroid. Nintendo had something beautiful after the Prime games... then they shot it in the heart and raped its corpse.

GT5 is on par with GT4. Has some flaws, some great things, but in the end, it´s not downhill at all.

I disagree. GT5 was a disjointed mess of a game at launch, and in that regard isn't much better now. It's like a load of different features, or separate games thrown together via an appalling menu system, rather than one game full of content, like GT4.

The time just compounds the matter when looking at what was done with it, not the reason people have a problem with it.

Forgot about Rayman as a franchise that actually did get better this generation.

While this is an opinion thread, taking a dump on MGS4 will be unpopular and rightly challenged. After all, the game won GAF goty and I believe GAF gotg awhile ago as well. I loved the game to pieces btw. Replayed it to the end twice, and my favorite acts dozens of times. The first playthrough of MGS4 was one of the most epic game experiences I've ever had with all the fan service moments. MGO was fun for a few weeks too. To each their own.

Well, I give you credit. At least you're willing to admit that's all it takes.

Metroid, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Resident Evil, Castlevania, Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts.....pretty much everything I used to love has gotten worse.....

The controls were pretty simple for me to grasp. I don't agree with much of the criticisms at all, especially the camera, except for the game not having precise direction in the four campaigns like you said. Also, I miss the weapon customization and custom skins in campaign but the fun I had from these games overwhelmingly overshadows the flaws for me. I did like how RE6 implemented sliding and how the new melee system works.

The third act was one of the weaker moments of MGS4 for me but the act itself was well done I thought. Infiltrating the ship and fighting all those FROGS ladies was quite splendid as well.

Ratchet and Clank is an odd one for me. I think Crack in Time may be my favorite entry in the series(or at least on par with Up Your Arsenal), but the last two Ratchet spin-offs may be the worst games in the whole franchise.

Fire Emblem is better than ever with 12 and 13!
I'm not hearing many complaints from Monster Hunter fans about that franchise either, so that too, and both are Japanese. :p

The biggest disappointments to me are Metroid, Zelda, and Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy: I liked XIII-2 a lot, but it wasn't some miracle game that saved the franchise. Not by any means. Coupled with the first FFXIII not being so good, Versus in a mockingly long dev cycle and Type-0 probably not coming to the west, and you have one gargantuan fuck-up.

Resident Evil: RE4 is a good game, RE5 is a good game, but they're not Resident Evil games to me. RE6 wasn't either, and it wasn't even a good game. At least those other two were good games, so they had that going for them at least. But overall, pretty pissed at the direction that series went in. I don't think it can recover either.

Silent Hill: I thought Downpour was awesome, Homecoming was pretty decent, and Shattered Memories had a nice vibe about it and a great ending, so I can't really jump on the doom train. However, they haven't been as good as the first three installments, so I can see how some people consider that series to go "down hill" this gen, but I don't think it means the franchise is in "shambles" or something. Far from it.

While not every series had this happen,
some of these series got worse because they dumbed it down so that more people would be interested so it would sell more.

Splinter Cell was a great stealth series last gen. Conviction was just another action game.

Ratchet and Clank is an odd one for me. I think Crack in Time may be my favorite entry in the series(or at least on par with Up Your Arsenal), but the last two Ratchet spin-offs may be the worst games in the whole franchise.

All 4 One was pretty good co-op fun (especially free from PS+) but I agree that QForce/Full Frontal is just bad.

Quest for Booty and Crack In Time are so good though.

Mass Effect... I love the universe but nothing holds a candle to the first one in terms of story and characters.

I couldn't agree more.

Garrus, Liara, Talia, Wrex, all these characters, when I think about them, I can only remember the good amount of time I have spent with them with the quests, story or in the game.

The characters that we have from Mass Effect 2, haven't given that feeling that I had from 1. Whenever they had the same characters for the game in 2 or 3, I always picked the characters from the 1st one. So usually Garrus is always on my squad along with the the others.

I really feel like they added a lot more characters in the game giving less importance to them and I don't really connect to them like I did from the 1st one.
