Indiana Jones and the Great Circle |OT| Fortune and Glory, kid. Fortune and Glory.

I didn't want it to be like tomb raider or uncharted.

In fact, I wanted it to feature third person brawling Arkham style whip combat in crowds with cool interactivity and finishers. Zero gunplay. Third person traversal. Puzzle solving and adventuring.

The combat in this game is abysmal. So is the stealth. The level design is open but somehow completely unmemorable and static.

The progression system is pointless because the mechanics in this game are pointless, it's not well designed.

The arguments that "oh it has to be different from uncharted" isn't using any imagination and basically just hand waives away the litany of flaws in this title.

It feels like an early PS3 era janky FPS title, not some supposed GOTY candidate masterpiece of tech
Arkham style whip combat? Yeah, that sounds like Indiana Jones 😂

I'm late - the comment has already been ridiculed many times. I don't care, it deserved to be said again!

Arkham style combat is way more realistic than the shit we got, just picking up shovels and guitars and beating wave after wave of characters with basic ass combat

Not sure why anyone is laughing other than those desperately defending it despite what they presented as being the worst possible option for combat

So you're doubling down and saying that Arkham style combat is WAY more realistic?

Alrighty then, you got it champ! 😂

Do you kill enemies in MGS games?

This isn't a combat focused game.

Its exploration game, just get through enemies without being seen. Take a few out if its necessary.

As I never gave this game a proper chance, and being the ancient egyptian geek at heart that I am, I may turn to this game once I've gone through, the other LucasArts adventure I am checking out at the moment: Jedi survivor..

I shouldn't be surprised that some people can't pick up on the fact that the combat is purposefully simplistic to emulate the movies. Indiana Jones is not a kung fu master. He would square up with people and box, and often lose, usually surviving on luck, a weapon, quick thinking, or grabbing a random / comedic object nearby. It perfectly captures the Indiana Jones vibe.

Interested in the game but did they ever patch/improve the heinous enemy AI from the preview footages? It looked like some PS2 level "stealth" and made Dishonored guards seem like geniuses.

After beating it on my XSX, I wanted to try it on my PS5 Pro. I think the HDR on default settings + system calibration (HGIG) works rather well.

Not seeing a huge difference so far, yet to reach the Vatican though. It does look quite sharp and stable, want to see if I can get the disocclusion temporal artefacts showing and if the LOD issues are any better (faster SSD, more memory, faster GPU, etc…).

What they f'ing blew is the Dual Sense implementation… it is rather weak haptics wise (they did not bother optimise for the Dual Sense well enough) and the triggers keep on making a clicking whirring noise every time you open the menu or your aim dot passes over an NPC you cannot attack… WTF???

… and they seem to have fucked up RT / LOD. I will reboot the XSX version, but I did not recall the streaming to be this bad and lighting so noisy…

It feels like very bad and aggressive bi-linear filtering… walking towards the wall slowly you can see it slowly filling the shadows and lighting in with detail and the noise going away (first it gets less blurry and then less noisy and then it adds details interpolating as you walk closely).

I'm in Egypt now having done every single quest in Rome, spent a whole lot of time there taking in the sights. Thoughts so far? The game is fantastic.

One of the best looking games this gen and it's gorgeous on Pro, runs flawlessly too. I'm quite enjoying the punchy (heh heh) combat, it's exaggerated and impactful. Stealth is absolutely viable too but I much prefer beating the shit out of everyone lol. Exploration is satisfying as are the puzzles, nothing too mind-bending but a few are just tricky enough to make you feel clever when you solve them.

The art is beautiful, there have been multiple sections where I felt mesmerized, there is great attention paid to environmental detail, lighting is jaw-dropping at times. The game is truly cinematic and immersive, going 1st person was definitely the right call, Machine Games know what they are doing.

DualSense haptics are exceptional, some of the best outside of Sony 1st party. Love the journal, love the camera and Indy commenting on so much of the world around him. The game is tactile, with a sense of physicality reminiscent of something like RDR2 while the deliberate examining of objects and filmic nature of many of it's sections is something so many PlayStation games have done so well, I guess Xbox fans *do* like this kind of thing 😂

Any criticism I have has to do with certain sidequests you discover but not being able to progress them until you've moved forward with the story. The game doesn't telegraph this in any way meaning you might be running around fruitlessly for 30 minutes and then an undeniable tedium kicks in. An intuitive way to solve this could have been Indy himself saying something like "I don't think I have what I need quite yet, best to focus on something else for now" when selecting that quest/task to track.

I'll save my final thoughts for after I've completed it but if it holds up it will undoubtedly be one of my favourites this year, let's see where the chips fall.

If its the quest I think youre talking about, yeah that was counter-intuitive. I spent ages running around trying to find a way in.

Outside of the noise, I believe this was an issue even with high settings on PC. Only way to solve it was to enable full RT sun shadows.

Jumping back in to this one after being sidetracked by playing all the Ninja Gaiden games again from when they shadow dropped Ninja Gaiden II Black.
After a small relearing curve, I'm starting to recall how to play this one...lol

Still in the Vatican and was considering just powering through so that I can clear up space when Exp 33 drops, but I think it'll better to collect everything instead of uninstall/reinstall later.
Game really does feel like an Indy flick at times

It's a good movie and great graphics. I never liked the combat and wish it was 3rd person Batman combat. Just uninstalled it for the $11 RDR2 I just bought. Never got around to it and wanna see it on my 4090, instead of the ps4 version i also got cheap a long time ago.

No, this is like DC mipmaps with very clear cut harsh LODs that move as you move along. This is bugged and not the only bug I am finding… :/…

Logged a bug ticket, 🤬

Playing on PS5 Pro I am noticing several issues with the game:

—— RTGI and Shadow rendering ——

In the museum, daylight, right after the artefact is stolen, there seems to be a severe LOD issue (shadow and RTGI cascade) with abrupt LOD level transitions very close to the camera as well as very noisy / shimmering RTGI which you can see in the video as I move further back in the room or on the bottom of display case on the right of the screen as I move a bit closer. Shadows are quite blocky and unstable.

For PS5 Pro's RT HW that is meant to be ahead of the XSX having an RTGI and shadows implementation noticeably worse is very disappointing.

—— DualSense Haptics / Adaptive Triggers ——

Every time the cross hairs hover a friendly NPC or whenever I pause the game opening its main menu, I hear a whirring and relatively loud click noise near the adaptive trigger. No other game ever made this on PS5, it sounds like the game is trying to do something with the triggers and/or haptics and stopping right away.

The haptics themselves seem like a straight implementation of the XSX version rumble not taking advantage of the controller stronger and more refined haptics from a user perspective.

I know there's no point in convincing you to keep playing, but what you want isn't what Indiana Jones is or was. No one remembers the movies for the "combat" and shootouts. It's not what the franchise has ever been known for.

And there is a progression system. It's the adventure points (xp) and skill books you find.

And there is a hub. It's called The Vatican. And Giza. Large open areas that spoke off into other smaller areas.

From day one you wanted this to be just another Uncharted or Tomb Raider. What you're wanting for is just another globe trotting, third person gunplay infused non stop action romp.

And arguably that's what makes this game a standout and enjoyable to me: because it isn't that.
Playing Indiana Jones is giving me some similar Uncharted feels and has made me realize how much I miss Uncharted and want more games ...

I have a feeling that the Pro version doesn't have the RTGi fixes that the SX got ...it's just not impactful looking on the Pro ...also, shadow quality is poor

The Pro version should be kicking the ass of the SX

Accidently finished Vatican main storyline quest and now traveling to Egypt. Is there a way for me to back and finish the side quest I didn't do yet?

Look at the travel section of the journal. Should be an option to travel back there (which I never actually did).
Thanks, that worked. I didn't have that many side quests left, but wanted that done before I tackle Egypt which I hear is much bigger. And since I have a memory of a goldfish, I didn't want to relearn the whole Vatican layout again

Just finished the Vatican section, it's been great up until now. The immersive sim-lite structure was the perfect choice for this game, I'm glad they went in this direction instead of making a safer linear cinematic third person shooter.

Full path tracing looks really great, what I like most about it is the sheer consistency, everywhere you look it looks just right. It really helps with immersion.

My preferred method for dealing with an enemy camp:

I'm in the 3rd open area now, continue to be impressed with pretty much everything about the game. Machine Games absolutely delivered but I expected nothing less, loved all their previous games though I now feel comfortable saying this is their best one yet.

Props to Troy Baker for really getting those Indy intonations right and shout-out once again to the fantastic DualSense haptics, really takes the immersion to the next level.

I have an annoying gray look to the game any time Indiana Jones goes into a dark area. I don't remember seeing something like that on other games in dark areas. I am playing on the PS5 with an LG OLED.

Anyone else see something like this? is there some setting I should change?

Finally wrapped up and 100%'d Egypt. Man dude if you think the Vatican is huge, jesus christ Egypt is like a small Far Cry map.

I'm glad the next two areas seem a bit more straight forward and shorter. Nice way to change things up. Had they thrown you into another massive zone after this, it would've definitely had me teetering on putting the controller down for a bit.

And it's bad enough I will now need to balance this and Days Gone and now possibly Oblivion.

Fucking videogames man.

It's the same 3 act repeat structure as Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima, both of which I put down and didn't finish. Luckily for Indie's sake, the maps are all quite a bit different so it kept me going until the end. And they had the mini-chapters as well which helped pacing a tiny bit. Different setting, totally different culture, and even different types of level design.

Just wrapped it up (~35 hours), it was consistently great even after the Vatican section. All the other open areas have a different structure and gimmicks, making them pleasant to explore and avoid burnout.
Also, those linear chapters between the more open levels were perfect in disrupting (in a positive way) the pacing of the game, I really liked those too.

I loved the performance of all the main characters: Indiana, Gina... and the exceedingly punchable villain that is Voss. Great stuff all around. The OST was on point too, it really makes you feel you are watching the films at times.

The main downside is that the game is way too easy on normal/moderate. I didn't mind since I just wanted a game in which to explore and solve mysteries, but if you want a challenge you need to increase the difficulty for sure.

I still can't believe we got an AAA first person immersive sim (albeit simplified). Kudos to the devs for sticking to their vision... it really shows. I hope we get a sequel in which they double down on this direction.

Finished it this morning. While I felt Sukothai was a dip in quality mainly due to the boat and traversal, I left the game very high on it and wanting more. Got pretty excited when I remembered there's DLC coming at some point.

Just wild that this captures the magic of Indiana Jones so much better than the last two films. Dial of Destiny was so bad I couldn't finish it. The end of this and the twist was very Indiana Jones.

Finally getting around to playing this on a Series X (though I did try it on PC and Series S and it runs fantastic on those)

The Vatican area just keeps going and going, I though it was going to be a small part for the game and here I am 8 hours later, but I am loving almost everything about it, however, Stealth is kinda all over the place, is that a big part of the movies? I don't think so, but the game is so strong in its atmosphere and acting that it excels,

I have been playing it since release. Really, really enjoying the story.. but the gameplay is starting to bother me. But a couple of things are starting to bother me, now that I'm in
Giza
.

The AI is appallingly bad, traversal has very slow animations and the only thing you can do in the world outside story is pick up some collectables. Just wondering how it's everyone's GOTY and 10/10, am I missing something? Is the location I'm in the worst level? I admit I enjoyed Vatican more.

Im a bit Indy fan and the story does have me hooked so going to be continuing. But bit disappointed in the gameplay after the rave reviews.

The game starts really strong. The intro, the university and Vatican area are all absolutely superb. The next open world area and the two shorter and more linear missions after that are still pretty good, but after that the quality really seems to plummet. Just as the story started to gain momentum, the game halts and forces you to slowly slosh around tropical jungle area that is absolutely pain to traverse. I'm forcing myself to push through right now and 10/10 game has started to feel more like a 7.5/10 slop...

Is this the low point and does the game improve from here of is it just downhill until the end?

I recommend getting through all of the story missions there before going around and cleaning up side missions. The story missions here are really good and there is good side stories there. It's just such a slog to get around that it loses the fun the longer you are there.

It is definitely the low point of the game though.

I just completed the hidden temple mission and it was OK. Just found it highly annoying that I needed to dive, climb, jump, solve puzzles and evade and fight that *thing* for like an hour to just get back to the starting point to lift Gina up there with my whip. Quite a hassle that could have been avoided if Indy just could have climbed that 3 meters of stone wall.

This game is fantastic but it suffers from it being a bit too long for the story it's telling, by the time I got the 3rd location the story was kinda done and then it's being dragged out just a bit more

Compare it to something a bit more actiony and in the same genre, well Uncharted ends up felling more Indy than this
