IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

A few pages back, somebody posted that there's a fix for FO3 (and some other games, apparently) that tricks the game into thinking you have an nVidia GPU. From what I understand, it works with FO NV as well, but requires some additional INI changes or something.

Edit: This post is what I was referring to.

Thanks, but I don't think that's the problem...it's the mods. The game booted just fine when I ran it without them. If I try it again, I'll just need to load the mods one by one to see what's causing the problem.

Well this isn't really pocketable.
Well it is but you'll be constantly turning your device on.
3 rows of keys already make contact with the screen and I did a test where I applied light pressure to the screen with it closed and it wakes up and with it in your pocket you won't know until it starts getting warm.
It really needs a taller lip to prevent contact.

Also successfully got Skylake drivers installed this time following the instructions by SurfaceProGamer and using drivers from IntelliModder 32
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiG-W_FiXX4&ab_channel=SurfaceProGamer

Now games that crashed before still get black screens and artifacts just like the old drivers but I no longer get display driver crash errors and application blocked from accessing graphics hardware messages and the game will continue running.
A positive I guess?

Finally managed to sit down and test some games on this beautiful thing. Will post more later but so far today:

Xanadu Next - Runs perfectly, as expected. Text is a little small, as expected.

Lovely Planet Arcade - Runs super smooth at a solid 60fps.

Yooka-Laylee Toybox - Playable at lower resolutions, but inconsistent framerate. The device got very hot with this one.

What about performance improvements? Have you tried any benchmarks or emulators?

Here is the video to the directions.

When you played it without mods, were you able to actually start a new game? Fallout 3 will start, and go to the main menu without the mod. Once you try to start a new game (or load a save) is when it crashes. The Intel HD mod will actually let you get past that point and play. If you were able to play NV after a fresh install from Steam, as in get into the game and walk around, then the Intel HD mod probably won't help you.

I've been playing Fable 3 on this thing but the game crashes after a while usually when the second core reaches 79 degree Celsius. Is that too high a temp for this it does seem kinda high. Other then that the game runs great with no issues.

Maybe our versions of mame are different. I'm using mameui32. If I do what you suggest I have to switch back to mouse mode after mame loads in order to check the joystick box in the options controller settings. And it's grayed out. I notice that setting up emulators is hard or impossible switching between mouse and joystick modes.

I believe I am using mameui64 since fx is no longer updated

Wow, Twisted's PS4 remote play unofficial app works beautifully on this thing. Dark Souls 3 felt incredible (weird L3/R3 aside). Totally worth the 10 bucks IMO.

I guess I met my first problem with the Win..

It only charges in Sleep mode on when it is switched on. But not charging when it is turned off (i.e. charging light disappears after 10 seconds upon powering down the device).

Any idea?

I'll have to re-download and try it, then- I didn't actually start a game and just went to the main menu, then quit, to generate a required .ini file. However, with mods, the game wouldn't even start (using the New Vegas Script Extender).

Looks like someone put up one for New Vegas here:

Well if anything it kinda seems I've gotten a tiny drop in framerate with Skylake drivers although I haven't done any back to back testing yet since I've been occupied with other things.

Huh trying to load 3d models from world of warships in my browser gives me graphic driver crashes but finally installed the game itself and with every option as low as it can go I can play it perfectly fine.
Mid to upper 20's for FPS is decent all things considered.

Well apparently Aliexpress is having a 11.11 sale and several stores have the Win for $324 including GPD's flagship store which I know for sure it was $400 yesterday.
Whether or not you want to buy directly from them is one thing though.
There's one other store that's selling it for that price though.
They've also got the digitizer lcd unit for the Win for sale now where I could only find it for the XD before.

Looks like 13-2553e-2338-1 on the back of the panel but I haven't found anything on it yet.

They probably could've chosen a better screen to take a picture of.

I'll ask again about any luck with PS2 emulation. It's quite poor for me.

On the other hand, Dolphin DX12 is continuously impressing me. SSX3 and Burnout 2 run at 60 with the occasional hitching.

It may still be charging. I had to change this setting when updating to Anniversary. No light turns on but it is charging.

GPD WIN will not power on while plugged in to power via USB-C, instead it only shows battery charge percentage, must be unplugged in order to power on. This can also occur during reboots (e.g., during the Anniversary Edition upgrade cycle).

CAUSE KNOWN. BIOS configuration can resolve this. Does not interfere with device charging.
Advanced Tab -> System Components -> S5 - Charging Driver -> Disabled (Thanks /u/Phawx!)

This device has an unique feeling to it. It feels cheap/rough and high-end at the same time... Overall, I like it but I wouldn't recommend it unless you like to tinker with your gadgets.

You guys know how close this is to the HD4000 i3?

performance wise i guess

been watching some low-end gameplay and some of the game perform surprisingly well and same-ish as the gpd win gameplay vids

I assume its super close?

I'm kind of curious about this too.

The GPD Win is noticeably weaker compared to those specs, especially CPU-wise. Expecting performance to be around the same is setting yourself up for disappointment.

I don't normally pay attention to integrated graphics benchmarks and that was the comparison I was interested in, not the CPU part.

How!?!?!?! I'm not able to make it run even on constant 40 T__T

So now that the dust has settled, any regrets yet? It looks like this thing is surprisingly powerful and can even run Dolphin.

I have one in my cart right now but can't quite pull the trigger, the two biggest concerns I have are reports of the buttons being mushy, and battery life. Are the buttons really that bad?

No regrets. One of my favourite portable devices already (and this is coming from someone with multiple Vitas and 3DSes).

The face buttons are quite mushy, but still feel responsive and you quickly get used to them. I've barely used the D-pad yet, which has a similar feel, so I can't comment on that yet.

Dolphin works really nicely. Spent half an hour just now playing Super Monkey Ball 2. Ran flawlessly and only used up 10% battery total.

And the screen is gorgeous. Just as nice as the OG Vita imo.

It runs a much larger percentage of my Steam backlog than I expected, a lot better than I thought it would (granted, I like my indies).

I hope it's durable, cause it's gonna see some heavy use.

Very happy so far.

No.

I'll double check but all I'm using is vanilla 5.0 (not Ishiiruka) with DX12 experimental, basically changing no settings. It's not perfect. F-Zero, Resident Evil, Metroid Prime, and Smash Bros are out. But it's surprisingly great at times. Wave Race's menus have problems but the races themselves are solid. Star Fox Assault is solid with hitches (arwing and on foot levels). Harvest Moon is perfect.

PS2 I'm not having much luck. PCSX2 1.2.1 seems better than 1.4.0 and the nightly/1.5.0 version I tried. Shinobi hovers around 45-50 and it's the best of what I've tested so far.

Well I finally ordered one yesterday so I will be contributing info on how games run as soon as I receive my order.

I was able to get it for only $287.20 from GPD's store on aliexpress thanks to their 11-11 sale and a couple coupons. Pretty nice deal.

Alright, I'm in! Last question - how's the fan noise? I couldn't really tell from any of the videos I've watched if the "high" setting is that loud or not.

Pretty much unnoticeable on low unless you put your ear to it and barely on high.
Any game sounds will mask it.

Well considering I was simply expecting world of warships to crash I am pleasantly surprised by a framerate in the 20s.
Hoping to get it higher.
Anyone else have their application windows get misaligned even in full screen mode and the mouse be off by a little bit?
Mouse being offset only happens in games but everything from IE to other apps and games will end up offset at times.
Closing the app and reopening it will usually solve those issues.
I don't think this happened before so it may be a issue stemming from the Skylake drivers.

Huh that's crazy, what kind of aircraft are you in?

Can anyone give me tips on setting up the joystick and buttons with emulators? Here's the issue: you need both mouse/keyboard and joystick controls simultaneously to set things up. Mouse/keyboard to click the button you want to change and then hitting the appropriate joystick button to change it. Mame and N64 are like this. When switching over from mouse/keyboard to joystick nothing registers.

I don't have mine yet, but can you just connect an external keyboard and mouse to complete the setup?

On high setting it is noticeable, but it's never bothered me while gaming (with sound) on it. I never feel the need to set it lower or off on less demanding games. But I may have a high tolerance for noisy things, even the PS4 doesn't bother me..

Just got mine and tinkering with it now - how long does it usually take to charge? I've been messing with it for a few hours on charge and it's only gone up 15%

Charges a lot faster if it's turned off or in sleep. Don't know the exact times but it definitely charges slower if you are doing stuff on it (but still charges).

Actually spent some time playing games rather than testing and I continue to be very impressed with Dolphin emulation and the battery life also manages to be better than I thought.

When I sat down to test PCSX2, though, still a poor experience. Of all the games and various builds I tried, Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories is the most playable. PAL versions of a few games might run fine on PCSX2 1.2.1 DX9. Hope they one day implement DX12, Vulkan, whatever to bring it up to Dolphin quality.

considering to cancel my order on Geekbuying - apparently they have the units in the warehouse this week (i emailed them), but I dont want any things shipped to me with Christmas coming up soon

Anyone been through cancelling an order through geekbuying?

hopefully it ships this week tbh i really want this device ~__~

I'm testing some PC Games from the PS2-GC-XBox era...

Too much feelings *__*

Actually I tested Need for Speed Underground 2, POP Sands of Time and OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast. Everything works perfectly and logically better than emulating them. I think that I will test other games like Silent Hill series and DMC3.

Any suggestion about games to try from the PS2-GC-XBOX era on PC?

I've cancelled an order with them - took a few tries for them to actually understand what I was saying, but I got there in the end.

What's better for playing games off - micro SD or USB?

With USB I had no problems but as soon as my new 128 micro SD arrives I will test games also on that!
