IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Eh that's really weird. Is your fan activated ? I mean, mine gets warm while playing Wind Waker and charging but that's about it. When I don't charge, it doesn't.

Yep, it was on the middle setting but I noticed it was getting warm so I turned it to the highest setting.

Yeah is your fan on? personally I found playing on the thing uncomfortable even playing something like Halo 1 on it, wasn't anywhere near burning my hands but the constant heat was just offputting for any long period of time.

Nearly burning my hands was a bit hyperbolic but it was certainly hot and I think it would've been dangerous to continue playing so I just turned the thing off.

Well it looks like GPD has started using the Z8750 instead of the Z8700 and possibly switched back to the faster Samsung eMMC drive as well for the ones they are making now.
Caught me by surprise, did not expect this to happen out of nowhere.

Isn't the Z8750 version actually running worse? Saw some Youtube video claiming that.

Pretty sure the parts change on all their devices change pretty regularly depending on supply they can get.

It could be that there actually were problems with the Z8750's before that Intel has ironed out or the fins on the heat sink actually did impede airflow after all leading to throttling.
Dunno, we should see a bunch of people getting them soon so we'll see for sure.
Before I had received my device I dismissed the idea of the higher burst clock since I assumed it'd throttle but I've since been proved wrong by the Win's ability to run at a steady 2400mhz so assuming no problems pop up this should have a small performance boost for cpu intensive applications.
Time will tell.
Pretty sure the parts change on all their devices change pretty regularly depending on supply they can get.
GPD is known for doing that but they've consistently used the same parts for the Win so far and given how they overly hyped up everything about the revised model its weird to see absolutely nothing about the cpu change anywhere until now.

Ended up getting a cheap N3DS XL grip to use with this. Had to trim pieces off, make air holes, and use a type of grip to hold it to the case, but it works decently. Evidently the GPD Win is narrower than a N3DS XL, so I'm seeing what else I can modify.

Wait, the new ones have 8750s? Bit salty that the one I ordered was a pre-revision one then... especially since Geekbuying's page stated that these were the revised ones. Blah.

Either way, fixed my issue with the analog stick. The stick itself was a defective, but popping in a new one was easy enough. Starting to enjoy the system more now. Most of the lower end PC games I've thrown at it run perfectly. Tried in home streaming - works pretty nicely, though for some reason Dolphin and PCSX2 don't interpret the controller properly. Tried some Dolphin emulation and it was a bit mixed. Fire Emblem 9 stuttered on videos, had some popping and slowdown in-game. Is there a recommended build or some settings I should be looking out for to get better results with it?

Likewise, what N64 emulator would people recommend? I used Mupen in Retroarch and wasn't completely satisfied with the results - mostly because of some accuracy issues.

Best way to explain the revisions is that there have been two

IF your lid is matte and your hdd is Toshiba it is a revision version. Just the revised 8700 version

The 8750 is the newer version that was released/rereleased in January after fixing the original hardware problems with the launch 8750 version.

Confusing I know.

Ok i think i'm finally ready to buy it, 48 pages are too many and i want to have a honest idea to what to expect so here some questions:

-how is the build quality?
-is it confortable to play with?
-can i expect it to run all the 2d indies without problems?
-is there somewhere a list of tested games on it? I have already seen a list that a gaffer kindly posted here but i was wondering if there was a more comprehensive one.

Thanks :)

1. Aight? Biggest issue is the lottery aspect - especially the earlier batches had bad QC. Seems the recent ones don't have as may issues. The system itself seems sturdy (even if the shoulder buttons are a lil on the "concerningly wobbly" side), but I haven't used it enough to say if it starts to fall apart after a while.

2. You have to adjust your grip a bit, but I've found it decent so far. Not the comfiest ergonomics in the world, and the analog placement seems like hell if you have small hands, but it's serviceable and I haven't found myself turned off of using it because of its design.

3. Kind of! So it's gonna depend on optimization and game speed. For example, I've heard that the 60FPS build of Hyper Light Drifter is a bit dodgy. For the most part though, and in my experience, it seems great.

(on a similar note, PC ports of older games seem great on this. Tales of Symphonia and Disgaea both run wonderfully so far)

4. There's a GPD Wikia that has some info, but for the most part you're just going to have to search solo to find answers on a per-game basis. Any in particular? I can try to test some.

Anyone have any input on the best N64 and PS1 emulators for the device? What about recommended Dolphin and PCSX2 builds?

This is a pretty big reddit list of what games have been tested. Some surprising games on there.
Thanks guys! :D

Man the 8750 is tempting but i want the gpd win ASAP! X(

Downgrading the BIOS and underclocking the CPU has made a tremendous difference in battery life and temperature of the device. Charging also doesn't take all day now.

What the hell guys!
Yesterday Gearbest applied the coupon on the current price, today instead it applies the coupon on a higher price, i see that in the coupon faqs this seems to be the rule but why yesterday it didn't do it?

It probably expired, should have been good until 16th. Coupon code gbvalentine still works, but only -8%, making it €302.09.

GPD pocket is on Indiegogo, looks pretty nice.

So I've been eyeballing a GPD XD for portable retro emulation, but the WIN looks like it can handle up to GCN, PS2, and Wii? Is this the case? If so, I'd rather spend the extra money to be able to do that on the go...

Looking more into it, I can't seem to figure out which model to buy here in the US. There are a bunch of options all over the place and they all seem a BIT different. What are my best options here?

Took GPD 7 hours to raise 200K and cross their goal and now its over 300K in just under a day for the Pocket so its well outpacing funding for the Win.
The Win took what, a week to reach 100K?
Well over half the backers so far appear to be coming from Japan.
So this proves Japan still loves UMPC's, there is a market for both gaming and general use UMPC's and GPD has carved themselves one profitable niche here.
Will be interested to see what the final split is between Ubuntu backers and Windows backers.

Anyone who backs the Pocket after how GPD handled backers of the Win are fools.

Has there been any fix or solution for the broken keyboards? My keyboard no longer works but everything else working fine at the moment. Too worried of losing it forever to send it in for repairs.

You can use the coupon to get the same price for the z8750, but i didn't want to wait because the difference between z8700 and z8750 is really marginal.

The z8750 one is slightly more expensive and you could only preorder it for a mid march release when I was looking for one at Gearbest some time ago.

If anyone wants a Z8750 for sure you can get one right now.
https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/comments/5ul6k9/you_can_now_choose_which_cpu_you_want_if_you_buy/
You just have to go through GPD's store and let them know beforehand.

Got an seemingly decent idea to make a radiator but I'd need to mill a form to create the fins and I can't help but wonder if using thermal epoxy to attach a bunch of tiny countersunk copper screws upside down would work and be a lot easier to do as well.

Given how willing they usually are to sell spare parts maybe I should just ask GPD if I can buy another heat sink from them and experiment on that.

Just wondering, but about how much play time does everyone get out of their batteries? I'm getting around 2 hours on mine per charge with the BIOS tweaks, which feels kind of low. Might have to turn those off for most games - not really fond of when a handheld has me tethered to an outlet anyhow, especially with how hot this thing gets while charging.

Also, slapped a 3DS d-pad in mine to replace the stock one. More or less a perfect fit as far as the molding goes, but there's a bit more material friction and the Win's membrane isn't a perfect fit for it (though it seems to have settled just fine now after some use). Still greatly prefer it - the curvature and less glossy, slippery material make it a hell of a lot more usable for me.

The coupon(Is it still valid?) is applied to the full price that's the same for the 8700 and the 8750, about the wait... you have to wait lol.

After a research online i came to the conclusion that the 8750 is just a newer 8700, the gpu is the same just renamed for clarity, the cpu has a really slight higher boost(2.56 instead of 2.4 IIRC) but boost speed is used in peaks, not constantly so the 8750 wasn't worth the wait for me.

are there ways, to get better performance out of the win?
seems like all I can play are 2d pixel art indie games.

On youtube there are many videos of games played on the gpd win, even recent big ones like doom, overwatch, tomb raider reboot and others play fine.

As someone suggested to me search reddit for more infos, there's a section dedicated to the gpd win.

Mine arrived today, the first impression is that the finish/plastic actually looks better than I thought it would based on pictures, and the screen is really rather nice too for a somewhat low-cost device. Buttons and sticks seem fine, keyboard better than expected, d-pad is mushy.

Game impressions will have to wait until the Windows update finishes, which seems to take absolutely forever (we are talking multiple hours here).

Which CPU did you get with it? I have the 8700 and am happy with it, although Disgaea and a few other games make it run a little hot.

This thing was the best game related purchase I made last year.

I tried out some things now. N++ and ManaCollect locally (since they are small in terms of file size and the kind of thing I'd play on the go), both work without issues at 720p / 60 FPS.

Then I tried streaming Atelier Sophie, and it's absolutely fantastic. Perfect quality 60 FPS stream from my PC (where the game runs at 1440p with 8xSGSSAA), which actually means that I'm playing at 32xSSAA on the GPD WIN :P

I've gotta experiment with Steam streaming more on this thing. I only tried once with Berseria and had some noticeable lag and artifacting. I was also on a 2.4 wifi channel at the time though (Win-end, desktop is LAN to the router), so that might well have been part of it.

Ok guys i'm starting to be worried, i ordered one at gearbest but it's 5 days since my gpd win arrived at the london sorting centre, is it normal?

here the tracking info

2017-02-17 19:12:00 Parcel departure in Shenzhen Sorting Centre
2017-02-18 10:00:00 Parcel departure arrive in HongKong Sorting Centre
2017-02-18 23:05:00 Parcel is leaving Hong Kong Airport
2017-02-18 23:05:00 Parcel is leaving Hong Kong Airport
2017-02-18 23:05:00 Parcel is leaving Hong Kong Airport
2017-02-20 00:02:00 Parcel is leaving Hong Kong Airport
2017-02-23 05:06:00 United Kingdom Lonton Sorting Centre
2017-02-23 19:25:00 Information sent to Italy

Iin the beginning there was only the "2017-02-20 00:02:00 Parcel is leaving Hong Kong Airport"(the last one) then for some reason appeared other 3 "2017-02-18 23:05:00 Parcel is leaving Hong Kong Airport"(i wouldn't mind if they ship 2-4 gpd win to me lol)

Anyway the only thing i care is that they give me my gpd win ASAP!

I've had stuff sit in sorting centres for weeks at a time before, and I think earlier in the thread Durante said he had one sit in customs for 4 weeks. It's annoying and irritating but it happens sometimes.

Also consider that depending on which service it was sent using and which sorting centre it went by they might not count the weekend as working days, which means that in terms of actual working hours for them it hasn't been sitting there for the same amount of time it feels like it has to you.
