I have to say I'm even more happy with my GPD Win now after some consideration than when I got it. It's not a perfect end-user product (e.g. I had to disable hybernation to eliminate an issue where it would sometimes not wake from sleep), but it's really surprisingly useful and capable.

I expected streaming to work well, and it does, but native gaming is more doable than I expected too. Currently, I'm playing Hyperdevotion Noire natively on it, and it works really well - don't get me wrong, it does drop to ~20 FPS in some battles, but since it's a strategy game that's not too bad. Before I got it I expected non-streamed gaming to be a possibility only for either very old or 2D-ish indie games.

Anyway, it's great having access to your massive Steam library while lying in bed.

I haven't tried it (also because it's 14 GB), but I very much doubt it. Given its performance on my rather beastly PC there's no way it would be a good experience natively on the GPD.

Yikes. I don't have that much space left on mine and I knew it had performance issues compared to Sophie, but blimey.

I'll stick to my PS4 copy then. Was just hoping there was a better portable experience available than the lacklustre Vita port.

Hearing that Sophie runs well on this has me tempted to pick it up. I've been loving this thing as an in-home streaming device lately (been playing through the first Yakuza on PCSX2 through Steam and it's perfect) but being able to run more games natively is nice for the portability aspect.

Anyone got much experience with that third party PS4 remote play app on PC on this thing by the way? I've been using it, but performance hasn't been stellar. I had to limit bitrate to about 8000 so that it doesn't have terrible artifacting all over the place during any 3D games and the IQ isn't fantastic as a result.

These days i wanted to write a similar post but i always postponed.

In the beginning i gave performance the priority but the heat and the short battery life didn't make me enjoy it.

Then i gave priority to battery life, and now it's totally another thing, performances are really similar but i can play for more and with less heat.

About performance it totally depends on the game, KOTOR2, that's a really old game easily drops to 1 digit fps, but apparently that happens on normal computers too because the game engine doesn't go well with modern hardware, while newer and better looking games, like condemned, renegade ops, shadowgrounds dragonfall and trackmania nations, are constantly around 30fps or slightly less.

I'm really happy with it.

Been doing some experimenting with the heatsink.

I'd have to file a flat on one side of the copper pipe since its OD is 1.55MM and the gap is 1.4MM and I'll need to do some tests since they'll impede the flow of air but given I've got a fan with a higher static pressure hopefully a bunch of short sections side by side covering both openings will work to dissipate heat better than the flat plate.

Also discovered that you do not want to over torque the joystick screws.

Because it'll be fine when you put it together but at some point apparently the mounting tabs will crack since those small screws heads are only slightly larger than the hole which places more load on that small contact surface than it was designed for.
I think I'll also remove the 2 screws in the middle of the board above the white sticker, no matter how far you tighten them the head will slightly stick into the battery and I just don't like that.

Well for a 12 hour drive I spent the entire trip plugged in catching up on my backlog of anime with the battery staying at 100% the entire time and without it getting hot.

From what I've read is that it plays more 360/PS3 games. Which is fine for this tiny thing. To access Steam or whatever store you want is pretty damn cool. I didn't know I wanted one until I read Jez's review on WC.

It really depends. What games in particular do you have in mind? It can run many last gen games to varying extents. There's tons of videos of people running various games with fps counters on it, even newer games (though they look like garbage on it and run pretty bad)

If you are ok with low settings and around 30 fps you can even play not too demanding new AAA games.

One thing you have to take into account is that it isn't cold as Vita for example, it can get warm, but if you use battery saving settings you get less heat, more battery life and similar performances.

Performances depend on the game obviously, i don't have many games but i would say that ps360 era games in general run well(bioshock demo at high settings!)
In any case if a game doesn't run well you can always lessen the resolution, the difference between 720p and 544p(or 576p or 600p) would unnoticeable if not for 2d elements.

Heat cannot be destroyed, all a cooling solution does is transport the heat to outside of the device/environment its trying to cool. In a portable device, it's a bit harder to find a place to send the heat to that isn't touched by the user's hands.

The only way they can really fix that is by either reducing the device's CPU/GPU/RAM clock speed or using a newer/better CPU/GPU/RAM architecture that can do the same amount of operations while using less energy. The form factor doesn't offer many options for heat dissipation.

I tried undervolting the GPD Win with throttlestop, i saw that when there was only throttlestop running and monitoring the voltage id was dynamic and it went down to 0.4850, while if throttlestop was active the VID was always 0.7650, so i tried to undervolt to 0.6500 and i played binary domain for long(i don't know exactly but more than an hour for sure) without problems.
For those who don't know it Binary Domain is this(my screens taken from the gpd win):




so not a visual novel.

then it was very late so i played at it for very few minutes at 0.6000 and then i just tried 0.5500 for even less minutes without playing, in any case no problems.

I think that at least in my case 0.6000 could be a good value but i need test it for a longer time.

I bought from gearbest, i chose the chinese warehouse and it arrived in Italy in 10 days IIRC, so it's ok for me.

Ok i played(and finished ) Binary Domain at 0.6000 so that value is definitively ok for me.

I really liked Binary Domain... One thing i don't understand about it is that even without undervolting and with graphics card settings to quality(the game doesn't have many graphics settings, just resolution, blur, AA) fire and explosion effects were never as they should have been, i guess it's a game issue with the graphics card.

Sorry for the double post but i couldn't resist and i went down to 0.58 and played the Torchlight 2 demo(that may not look as graphically complex as Binary Domain but it goes down to one digit fps so it's heavy) for a pair of hours(how long is that demo?!?!?) and ok again, i'm starting to wonder if i'm doing it correctly lol.

One thing i noticed is that as i said some posts ago with only throttlestop running and monitoring the minimum VID was 0.4850 but the average was 0.53 and if i activated the throttlestop profile the VID was constantly 0.7650, now not only the minimum is 0.47, but it's almost constantly on 0.47, even with the throttlestop profile activated.

I guess i should use prime95 to test the cpu, but if the gpd win works in real life situations with heavy games then it should be ok.

I keep playing at 0.58 and i think it makes less heat and i'm playing without fan, also if you play while charging it actually charges lol!
I dunno if for you was the same but my gpd win was able to drain more than the charge if i were playing a demanding game, in fact it wasn't rare that during the charge it hybernated because it drained the battery lol, now it actually charges.

In the gpu settings you can set custom resolutions, you can choose width, height and refresh rate, but i have never tried setting a different refresh rate, so i dunno if there are other options or if the refresh rate of the screen can be changed.

You should aim lower though, this is a handheld with intel gpu, not a big pc with a top nvidia card, performance depends on game optimization obviously but as a rule you should expect around 30 fps on low settings for games of the level of AAA games of the ps360 era(so basically more or less ps360 level performance on ps360 games lol)

I think this device is a good idea, but until they can put at least an intel M3 CPU and a dedicated GPU keeping the price close to that 300$ range, it won't be worth for me.
Or if those rumors about Microsoft working on full Windows 10 for ARM based devices are true, than they are in a good spot and could use Nvidia Tegra SOC too

It is made buy a small Chinese company in rather small batches. They won't have the economies of scale Nintendo has, so comparing the prices doesn't make sense.

Furthermore, Nintendo makes a lot of money on software and a subscription service in the future. GPD only makes money with the hardware so that Nintendo could sell at a lower markup if they wanted to.

Yes, i searched and i found that in the settings window(that i needed to run in portrait mode because the window was too big), you need to select your gpu and resolution even if they are already selected and save.

I have always said, even in this thread, that the Switch price isn't high... but you can't compare it with the gpd win, they are two completely different things, gpd win isn't even a console, it's a mini notebook with controls, you can do everything with it, in fact i even use some programs on it.

As you can see i chose a gpd win instead of a switch because yes power, nintendo games and all the other features are good and all but for me games are what matter the most and no console can beat pc in amount and variety of games, and don't underestimate it's power, it's surprising how pretty powerful it is, i bought it to play indies and old games and instead i can generally play ps360 era level games and even not too demanding newer games.

And the fact that you don't need to hope/beg/signed petitions to have a game on the gpd win because everything is already there is really priceless, i tell this as one who hoped/begged/signed petitions a lot for Vita.
Yes this is something people don't think but man if it's awesome...

Got mine on Monday from NeweggFlash. The packaging looked really nice, and I was surprised that it came with its own screen protector and cheap earbud knockoffs.
I was also surprised by how solid it feels and how well it runs games. Sleeping Dogs and Dark Souls II both run pretty great. Dark Souls II can run at nearly 30fps at full res and lowest settings, and at about 50fps at 800x450.

I've had problems with a couple of games so far. Currently The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ crashes on startup and I have yet to find a fix, which really sucks because it was one game I was really hoping to play on this thing.
Also, Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition crashes with a C++ runtime error no matter what. I also would like to be able to run some games below their minimum resolution, but many don't allow below 800x600.

Windows 10 on ARM won't mean anything for this since the games are x86

That being said, Switch will be lucky if it ever gets as much playtime as my GPD-Win does. Best thing I have bought in a long time.

I saw the witcher at 1.19euro and i bought it... It hasn't aged well at all lol, what surprises me the most is that imo Geralt and Triss have the ugliest models among the ones in the starting phase, also it doesn't run well at 720p no matter the settings, better play at high settings because you only lose few fps but the higher drawing distance makes a huge difference.
I guess that with the top down view it would run well, even better if at lower res, but it's perfectly playable even now at lower fps.

I despised it too, i wanted a design without the keyboard to have the classic gamepad layout but trust me the keyboard is still essential in pc gaming and the controls aren't uncomfortable as i thought, in fact i got used to them almost immediately.
Also you only look at the screen when you play and when you don't play it's closed, so no problems even if you find it really unbearable.

Not everything is a console-like game that can be played with few buttons, look at torchlight 2 for example, it needs 10 buttons just to fast select the items in the bottom bar:

Still not cool to the touch, or even in line with other handheld systems, but it's a hell of a lot more bearable.

Going to continue messing around with it, but I strongly recommend that people download Throttlestop and experiment with voltage settings. If nothing else, it's a good way to limit the system's CPU speed if you don't want it turboing for some games.

Also, anyone got a good PS4 remote play solution going yet? Maybe it's just because Steam's in-home streaming has been wonderful, but I've been a bit disappointed in the one third party remote play app. May need to mess with settings more though.

Thanks for the link. I actually found out how to fix Dark Souls previously. Apparently it doesn't like to be installed on USB sticks or micro SDs, only on the C drive or on a external HDD. Not helpful for my Isaac crashing though, unfortunately.

Also, anyone else who would like to run Dark Souls, you can actually set the depth of field resolution lower than the default in DSFix. I set mine to 90 (vertical), which doesn't look too bad on the GPD's small display, and my rendering res is 640x360.
Too bad there's no real way to disable certain effects in DkS3 or mod it for lower spec devices.

Yes guys try undervolting! I'm not using the fan anymore and the gpd only becomes warm(not hot) with heavy 3d games, with 2d games it remains ice cold for a good while before becoming warm(not hot).
My limit is 0.57 without throttling, at 0.56 i had a blue screen of sadness
I also had a blue screen of sad face at 0.58 but i was enabling throttling.
I need to see what's the lowest setting with throttling.

Yeah, I know it is, saw that video before I purchased my GPD. I'm unsure what to try now though, since Rebirth and Afterbirth work fine.

EDIT: Fixed. Turns out that even though I unsubscribed from mods, they still reinstalled themselves in documents again. Deleting them fixed the crashing.
Now that I have that and Dark Souls working, all I need is to get Trackmania working and I'll be a happy boy!

A while back I was trying to get a set of upgraded domes for the keyboard that came with the revised model and a month ago they were finally shipped with warnings that they were very hard to replace.
They showed up today and what did I receive?

A complete keyboard assembly mounted on the heatsink.
Not what I expected at all but in a good way.
This will make it easy to compare the domes/keyboard and several changes made to the heatsink.
