Yeah, this will always be my favorite live band. Every part of it is perfect, on time, sounds great, looks great, etc.

I was at the Portland show, and I think the setlist was weak (I really wanted In This Twilight and any of the rare live songs like Just Like You Imagined or Reptile), but everyone I know who went was super impressed, even the people who have never heard anything but Hurt and Closer.

I enjoyed the Tension show a lot, but I feel nearly every aspect of this tour has been weaker than the Lights In The Sky tour.

The opening acts and light show production are faaaaaar ahead of LitS. I like the new album so I wasn't too disappointed with the set list.

Opening act I will agree with. But visuals? Far ahead in what way? On both a technical and creative level LITS' visuals were way ahead of tension's.

Lights in the sky was completely interactive where visuals were generated and manipulated through movement, touch, light, and sound, while Tension's seemed to be all pre recorded with little to no interaction. Even the recent festival tour had a more interesting stage setup than Tension with moving panels. The How to Destroy Angels tour had amazing visuals as well. Also, the setlist for Lights in the Sky was longer and much more balanced, with at least a few songs off of each album instead of the Hesitation Marks dominated setlist of Tension. But of course as always, to each their own :D

Saw them last night here in Vancouver.
What an awesome technical feat, no other band I've seen live comes close.

Though I think I enjoyed Lights in the Sky more,
as the interactive stage had some elements which I wish evolved into the new tour.

Though glad they used the layered screens again,
I want those installed in my house! :D

So... saw them last night. First concert ever.

Some notes:

A lot of drunk people behind me.

A lot of stoned people ahead of me.

The super-pretty young brunette across the aisle from me was tripping balls on ecstasy. She literally did not stop bouncing up on down from the moments Explosions in the Sky started to the closing of Hurt. That is like... 3 hours. My God.

Some seriously creepy dude stepped on my friends foot and then held me by the shoulders and stared in my eyes while muttering something creepy.

I was creeped out.

All the people being carried by the crowd down in the pit reached the edges and the security yanked them out of the air and tossed them out. It was hilarious.

Trent... Trent was a goddamn live wire. That shit was amazing. The technical stuff was just fucking awe-inspiring. Explosions in the Sky was good, but they dragged on for way too long. Was 45 minutes, felt like more than an hour. NIN's set was so damn tight. No breaks, just track after track. It was amazing. I felt like I was gonna have a seizure at some points cause of the insane lighting at some points. Really cool. Intense. Trent did an encore, we thought he finished, so me and my friend started to leave only to hear the opening notes of Hurt and we fucking bolted back in. So good. So damned good. Intense. Best word for it. Couldn't stop tapping my feet. I never realized just how danceable some of NIN's tracks are, haha. Pleasantly surprised to hear A Warm Place. One of my favourite tracks. Really dug the live renditions of the Hesitation Marks stuff. The lighting on (I think it was) God Given was so intense, but I wasn't a huge fan of the song itself. That was God Given, right? With the crazy bright green lights?

That screen that they have is a technical marvel. Woo. Gonna upload a couple of shitty photos later.

Also, I think I might have been the only brown person there. Lol.

Happy to hear they are as on point everywhere else. Very cool he played A Warm Place.

Ha, definitely a new concert goer thing. Every band will play an encore, unless the crowd were assholes or the band is full of assholes, or some third unforeseen unlikely event.

I was just thinking about when it's time for NIN's actual last performance ever, what song they would close with. There's so many that could work I think, but I personally feel this would break me down into tears.

More like 2 hours, unless you included Explosions in the Sky...

Explosions in the Sky were boring as hell.
Snapchatted a bunch of their stuff to my friend, just to show her how boring they were... (She agreed)

Never leave a concert before the encore, there will always be an encore, it's like concert tradition.
Also, you'll know when a stadium concert is over cause the lights will come on.
When I saw people leaving prior to the encore, all I could think was "What a bunch of noobs"

You def weren't the only brown person... :|

Only one I saw on my half of the stadium. And yeah, I included Explosions in the Sky. Chick was seriously tripping from the beginning of the night. I noticed her during Explosions.

I had some thoughts. Smoking hot girl tripping balls.

Hm.

Probably In This Twilight, again. Such a good "closing" song (when played with the extended outro and each band member leaving their post). If it worked for the Wiltern, it will work again!

YES. THEY'RE COMING TO COPENHAGEN.

Wish they came down to our Arena here in Malmö which would have been a lot more easier on my budget but still, shit yes. I am so down on this.

I was hoping Vancouver would get Godspeed. Explosions were good, but dragged on for sooooooooo long.

A friend of mine saw them with Explosions opening and absolutely hated EitS. He'd never heard of them before and said it sounded like they were playing the same song for an hour. Pure torture. Otherwise he said it was the best show he'd ever seen. Wish I could have caught them when they passed through. It sucks being broke.

Got to see them in Portland on the 18th! It was my wife and my 12 year anniversary, and Trent's music has been such a big part of our lives. (Cheesy but true!)

The show was incredible, and we got to hear a few songs that we hadn't heard live before ~ The Wretched, The Day the World Went Away, and of course all the new stuff.

"Disappointed" off the new album is the song that benefits the most from the live environment. Not only because of the amazing light show but it's so much louder. I didn't really care a whole lot about that song, but I have a new appreciation for it now.

And man, the backup singer ladies are AMAZING.

Anyways, if they're in your neighborhood, don't miss this tour!

EDIT: ALSO Explosions in the Sky were terrific.

MoosiferX I met a couple at the show, it would be pretty hilarious if it ended up being you, though I doubt it. Were you in the stands or GA?

Buzzfeed article "Why Nine Inch Nails’ Tension Tour Is At Least A Decade Ahead Of Its Time"

some stuff i found interesting
“My goal is that — I can usually see the audience because I’m lit from behind a lot — is that I want to keep you from looking at your phone,” Reznor said. “I want to make you hold your pee because you don’t want to miss something. We’ve thought about all this stuff, and want to make this experience something that was worth your time.”

Though the tour has been in the works for well over a year, Sheridan’s team had to rework large portions of the show on the fly, and are constantly tweaking and creating visual elements to suit Reznor’s ever-mutating setlist and musical direction. “I work on the visual elements on days off or when I’m on a bus, I edit and tweak it,” Sheridan explained. “If you look at YouTube clips from night to night, you’ll see that the production can change pretty radically because every day, I show up at soundcheck with a hard drive and say, ‘Hey, load up the new files.’”

the band is planning on a completely different and more streamlined production on upcoming legs around the world.

look at each leg of the tour as its own mini-tour. The festival tour was focused on aggression; this tour the focus, I would say, is the new album, deep-groove stuff. I think the next one is going to lean a bit more into electronics, and experiment with that a bit.”

This makes me so excited. The Lights In The Sky tour was one of the coolest tours I've ever seen (kudos to the guys from This One Is On Us for capturing all that glory), and if we see more of that for the next leg I'm going to be so goddamn ready.

Was at the Edmonton show last night. I have to admit that the show was a LOT better than I thought it would be and, in fact, ranks right up there with the best shows I've ever seen. I was pleasantly surprised that most of the Hesitation Marks stuff actually worked well live. So glad we got VMOE and IWFY! Also really glad we got a healthy dose of Fragile too - TDTWWA was such a treat!!

Trent also mentioned that the Edmonton show was the last time they were going to play this particular setlist and that it would be brand new from Calgary onward. Australian/European fans might be in for even more of a treat!

last date of the tour tonight, unless they film this one too I doubt the stuff they filmed for the Staples Center show will end up being for a dvd/blu-ray release, maybe a live style music video or tv special will be the only thing we get for this tour.

What is it about NIN albums where songs don't sound all that great on an album, and then you see it performed live and it completely transforms the song for you?

That's how I feel about a lot of tracks on Hesitation Marks. Stuff like 'Copy of an A' and 'Came Back Haunted' were infinitely better live than on the album.

I agree. Copy Of A was an awesome opener when I saw them. The Hand That Feeds was damn good too.

I wish he played The Big Come Down in Portland, seems it was at most other cities, but wish Into The Void even more so.

Thanks for the link to the set.
Pino's bassline on March of the Pigs is fucking fantastic, crazy after 19 years the song still sounds so fresh.
Definitely. One of his best songs still IMO.

Oh man and Head Like A Hole ruled.
