Here's some truth.
If you don't get momentum early on, third parties will move on and forget you. It happened to the Gamecube, and it could happen to the PS3.
I don't care about Blu-Ray, HDDs, or STDs, if you don't get the momentum, you don't get the games. They can still turn this around, but it seems unlikely.

The cable doesn't come in the box which means 90% of consumers will never even know it exists. He has some decent points elsewhere although Imay disagree with his conclusions, but trying to argue that an A/V connection will be a deciding factor in the console wars is ludicrous.

people here are tripping if they dont think the wii love will fade...I mean Im one console person pretty muc, but I have infinitely more interest in 360 than I do in the wii...though mario galaxy looks crazy....I think when prices reduce the ps3 and 360 will easily hang with the wii

As far as the Wii being a fad: "waggle" doesn't interest me at all but if publishers embrace the platform because of marketshare or development costs to the point where the type of games that Atlus USA is associated with publishing only become available on the Wii I'll pick one up eventually.
The point I agree with the most is the Blu-Ray capacity. If GTA4 had been a PS3 exclusive (and please, I'm not trying to stir up a debate), there's no question it would have had more potential.

I don't know why you brought up the Genesis.
And if I remember correctly, the DS had some early momentum, then went into a severe draught. Another big factor was the price difference between the PSP and DS.

Depends entirely on your game. Oblivion managed to have a set of textures that are reused through the entire game, and a game with 200+ hours of gameplay.

This means that anyone with even a remote interest in cross platform games will have to take the necessary measures to fit their games into 7 to 9 gigs of space. Poor use of compression, extraneous and unnecessary data, and over-use of full motion video cutscenes will be a problem. The cutscene problem will mostly effect Japanese developed games.
4. Casino Royale - whatever. The format war isn't over. I actually believe that Blu-Ray will become the winner, but it's not even close to over yet.
5. HDMI - the emphasis on HDMI is very overrated. Component is identical to HDMI unless you're getting signal loss along the cable between the video source and the television. If so, get better shielded component cables.
6. Standard HDD - I mostly agree. However, at the same time the 360 will be able to drop the price on the Core 360 far faster than the PS3 will. I wonder what's going to happen when the Core 360 hits at a price of $200 while the PS3 is still over $400? He's right about the hard drive taking extra work to write custom code for, but it's definitely not equivalent to "not having a hard drive at all".
7. The Wii Fad Will Fade - I agree.
8. PS3 Has a Major CPU Advantage. I agree, but only a handful of titles will use it.
9. PS2 still outselling 360. Rofl.
10. Something For Everyone. Call me when there are PS3 games that are "something for everyone". I have a feeling we're not going to be seeing a lot of kiddy games on a system that costs $600.

I have some sympathy for Insomniac since they put out a great game and its sales are hamstrung by a struggling console . . . but holy smokes, this is a shrill hostile fanboyish screed.

I've had enough . . . the PS3 has a lot of great points . . . but exaggerating & lying about the PS3 will be counter-productive, IMHO. Fight the negative press with good truth. Otherwise, you'll make matters worse, IMHO.
I think Sony should concentrate on the $499 SKU and say "For only $100 more than xbox, you get a full Blu-Ray player and free online play." That is a compelling value argument. They just need to catch-up a bit on games.
BTW, there is absolutely not reason for a ban of Kittowny.

oh, and little big planet? awesome looking game but it's not sony's idea. they aren't making it. they're just publishing it. unless i can consider Epic a second party Microsoft studio that is.

BD also goes along with the whole CPU thing in that superior hardware (typically evidenced through graphics) don't win generations in the past yet Mr. Hastings think that they now determine the winner.
All in all his little diatribe would carry more weight if it addressed factors like price competition and economic trends instead of being so biased towards system power.

While he does present a lot of reasons why the PS3 will succeed in the future, he does a great job of explaining exactly how the PS3 was built to compete for the long haul. It's quite a compelling argument when you see each of his points broken down.
I have to say I agree with most of his points. But then again, it's not like this is all new information. It's all been there in front of our faces, but I think it's just a matter of thinking about the long haul. Meanwhile the 360 is already about to undergo it's first hardware revision, and I think thats fine, but the unfortunate thing for Microsoft is that some of the 360 hardware choices are not fixable with a simple revision. You can't make the processors any more powerful, and you can't easily make every game use the harddrive, and you can't make your discs suddenly 50gb.
Then you've got the bluray movie abilities of the PS3. We all know about this, and the truth is that it seems Bluray has already won. No, it's not 100% definite at this point, but it sure seems like it could be by Christmas. If, and when that happens, the PS3 has a major leg up as it's suddenly housing the defacto movie format for the next 5-10 years.
So, in all honesty, if I were asked by a friend which game system should I buy if i'm considering the true "big picture", I would have to answer the PS3. I love my 360 just as much as the next guy, but i'm under no illusions that it's lifespan is gonna be anywhere near the PS3.

PS3 has more and better potential first party million sellers so you have to buy more PS3 games than you would if you owned a 360, making the ps3 more expensive...
