Marathon Brought on a New Creative Director Last Month

MWAHAHAHAHA 😀

As always with every cash grab FPS MMO sludge that comes out the sewer, I'm gonna bomba 💣 it just for the sake of it.

And I won't stop until we either sink publishers/developers or they start giving me again great immersive FPS.

You've been warned, publishers/developers. 🤨

MWAHAHAHAHAHA 😀

How can you not love what's happening with the current Sony and Bungie? I just love it. It'll teach em a lesson for the rest of their lives.
What I hope the actual lesson will be: Don't overvalue the potential purchases of multiplayer studios.

What the internet wants it to be: Be on our side of the culture war and you'll be fine.

What Sony will make it out to be: Bungie should just be absorbed to either make Destiny for the rest of their lives, or be used a support studio for other, more popular Sony (and Marvel) I.P.

Don't think this game can be saved at all as something that will turn a profit. The idea of a yet another extraction shooter probably doesn't appeal to enough people.

Every gaming friend from decades past, that I have from Bungie days before Halo, during Halo era and raided with through D1 & D2 have ZERO interest in Marathon. Not one of us. It says a lot when lifelong hardcore Bungie fans have zero interest right out of the gate.

I can't understand the hate and negativity surrounding this game. I hope they can counter the hate and perception surrounding Marathon, because I don't think the game itself has as many problems as people think. Even with stolen art issue -a problem absolutlely fixable and less serious than people people believe or would like-, the art direction is the best of the generation by a mile. Good luck to the new director.

- Graphic looks last gen, unfinished, bland, lazy
- Ugly character design
- Strays from the original IP

Its not that hard to understand the negativity towards the game.

Hope the new director likes making single player games set in the Marathon universe because that's what everyone wants to play

Seems like only bad news but a new direction on a kinda boring game with great gameplay mechanics can only be better than the status quo.

So....

Marathon is COOKED!

The game needs another year in the oven with big changes like that.

Honestly, I'd say 1.5-2 years.

My big takeaways are

  • Completely redo the art direction. Make it look like classic marathon, but modern. I still don't know why they even want to call it Marathon
  • Build a single player mode so that even if the game isn't a big live service hit, you still have people come to it
  • Rebalance the game so it can be played in singles, duos, and trios and not just trios
  • Set up a new alpha once the changes have been made to multiplayer and get feedback on gameplay and tension

Just cancel it already.

They won't because it will tank their stock with 2 big cancellations making seem Sony doesn't know what they are doing.

Sony will do whatever they can to get Marathon out the door this year.

It's one of the main games they're depending on for income growth.

Which makes its complete absence from their last big state of play (probably) before it releases all the puzzling.

Why cant Sony stop this gaas madness which is kiling Sony game development of hight quality exclusives. Hulst and Ryan legacy to game development is pretty bad that it hurts there teams and wasted talents example are Bend and Blue point. Weird that with Sony blind obsession with Gaas they forgot to give more support and even fund the next project of Arrowhead or even buy Arrowhead company, even if helldiver 2 is such a big success. They continue to push this colorful and woke looking and generic gaas which looks like a propaganda for lgbt twisted gender ideology.

They should cancel it and do a mea culpa with this gaas bullshit... assume you fucked up, ask forgiveness from every retard that bought their Pro console (me included) and promise to do better in the future.
Pic doesn't tell the whole story. Do an image search. Pretty girl, but clearly a late bloomer. Probably had a middling time in high school at best. There's usually a certain amount is misanthropic salt in these types. Proceed with caution.

But, this will clearly save the game. We wanted the OG Bungie pedigree, and I can't think of anything better for that than Julia Nardin.

Also found this. Sorry to say it lads, but she's a mall witch. Clearly looks just like the Marathon art style on the website, so it's a perfect fit to design the look of a game targeted to young men. https://www.cafenordo.com/nordo-blog/2022/julia-spiritparlour
The good old times when games were made by nerd man for nerd man ..

Is this new Creative Director the same job as the miserable Marathon guy in the green shirt in last month's chat?

He got replaced? Or this new person is an additional role added?

yeah, I posted earlier, but learn from Space marine 2, not everything need to be GAAS. Just classic SP + MP + COOP.

Oh, I know where the hate comes from. From the same place of people cheering up every new publisher acquisition by Microsoft. Its pure console warring.

The things you mentioned are pure subjectives, don't you think? Ugly characters? Last gen graphics? You see? In my opinion graphics and characters are fine and vibes and art direction are superb.

"Unfinished"? A GAAS that hasn't come out yet? C'mon.

About the IP. Its theirs. They can do wherever they want to do with it. Nobody remembers a discontinued almost 30 years old IP.

Word about town is that the paid advertising was pulled so they can scrub the entire game, all promotional materials, and any game-related assets for copyrighted materials they don't have the rights for. Given that, in effective, Marathon's visual identify was basically lifted without permission, I expect this process to take a while. In the meantime, until Sony and Bungie have to figured out what they can legally sell, I wouldn't expect trailers, social media posts, or anything that visually presents Marathon from either Sony or Bungie. Period.

Hiring Manager: So why should we consider you as Creative Director, what are your skills and how do you represent the core values of Bungie?
Julia: *hands manager a printed copy of his own resume, with only the name changed to hers in the headline*
Hiring Manager: Welcome aboard.

Its not console warring, people saw a potential bad product. If you thought this was about console warring, then why no one is doing the same with Helldivers II? This is brand loyalty excuse.

Also, while the things I mentioned about the look of the Marathon are pure subjective, so is yours. So I find it baffling that you "can't understand" why others can have same opinion as mine as if you are the only one who can tell what is good art direction, which is even funnier now that we know this art direction was also a stolen one.

As for "unfinished", it really does look that way. Even Arc Raiders look more polished without relying on stolen (bad) artwork.

Sure, they can do whatever they want with a dead IP and we can have whatever opinion we have on a game that attempt to use an old IP to sell a game.

No it won't… Have you not seen what's happened to the comic book industry??? Have you not seen what's going on with Disney??? They are going to triple down on the problems and no the problem isn't GAAS…. Where is the Wolverine game with the Spiderman wall crawling animations? Where is the Horizon Multiplayer with the fat peg legged playable character? There were single player games being cancelled….

The game industry needs to bring back crunch and instill hard work and dedication into their work force.

I think it has already happened. I have been free from Destiny for an year now (finally) but people keep telling me they are pushing Destiny to a Diablo4 delivery model.

The perception around I was also bad prior the launch, at least around my bubble.

Please, let my point at your language. No bitter intention. So Bungie is "attempting" to "sell" (us) a game with and old IP, like if they were criminals or con artist. They are not entitlet to sell a game or to reimagine an old IP like other studios can. Thats what I am talking about in termns of negativity, hate and that. The incriminatory language is indicative of the community's predisposition toward this game. The community are not giving a fair chance to Marathon.

6 years in the games industry and already creative director on Sony's biggest upcoming multiplayer game ... did no-one else apply for the role?

Meanwhile:
Embark requires 10+ years experience for the Lead Designer role. [Job Listing]
Ten Square Games requires 8+ years experience for Lead Designer role. [Job Listing]
Warner Bros requires 7+ years experience for Lead Designer role. [Job Listing]

But sure ... 6 years of writing narrative qualifies you for creative direction at Sony.
? huh, many companies will still hire based on resume if someone is in the industry for 6 years, but has a solid body of work they've done on other projects, so saying 6 years here is odd, but 7 years for lead designer at WB is normal in and of itself is strange to think its this deep absolute.

Like MUST BE EXACTLY 7 years by the day or some weird thing like this lol

With Destiny 2 winding down, I get why they would move people around as she already has worked with the team

^ 5 years experience

^ 5 years

^ 5 years

^ 5 Years

My point, this is not really a hard and fast, absolute. Many companies will hire based on what you can do, of course if you have a degree, but even not having one, but having a solid resume of experience means many things like "years" can be overlooked if you qualify in other areas.

I know this simply as a manager at an IT company, that is not a absolute like some think it is, like if you have 6 years, 364 days doing a role and they are like "Ohhh wow, it MUST ACTUALLY REALLY BE, by day, exactly....7 years, to the hour even" lol

That isn't really true..

6 years is very little experience for a creative director role, double that is typical
6 years is very little experience for any role in the modern video games industry period.

People seem to be forgetting how long typical game dev cycles have become.

That's literally shipping 1.2x games…

It's a mix of it being a GaaS title and wanting Bungie's first new release to fail after Sony bought them. The title being being good or bad has anything to do with it.

We got some amazing first party games and experiences after their last smack into reality (PS3 launch).

So let's see how this plays out for them again.

they could bring in Jesus himself and that wouldn`t change anything anymore if they don`t postpone the thing by another 12 month or so. This is supposed to be out in 3 months...

Bungie was already absorved back in mid 2022, when SIE bought 100% of the company, since then is a fully owned SIE subsidiary that reports to the head of SIE's first party games, and since then have SIE's head of 1st party games and SIE's head of marketing in their board of directors.

In the acquisition agreed that some Bungie staff would move to the central SIE/PS Studios teams to support the SIE GaaS teams sharing knowledge and expertise, and Bungie also decided that -obviously- would reduce redundancies since obviously some job positions weren't needed there since they also had people at SIE already doing that job for all their studios.

Bungie keeps their publishing label and publishing all their stuff everywhere day one, but other than that they are part of PS Studios, as seen in the Marathon alpha including the PS Studios logo in the boot sequence. Bungie was incubating a new team to make a new game of totally different genres targeting a different audience, that when ready got their own studio under the PS Studios umbrella.

Other than that, for at least some years they continue and will continue focused in Marathon and Destiny.

It's easy to understand:
  • Some Xbox/PC/Nintendo fanboys hate anything coming from Sony
  • Some Xbox fanboys are specially butthurted by seeing the creators of Halo at Sony
  • Some Sony fanboys hate to see Sony making MP games
  • Some Sony fanboys hate to see Sony making GaaS games
  • Some Sony fanboys hate to see Sony publishing games outside PS, and day one
  • Some Destiny fanboys hate Bungie working in something that isn't Destiny
Outside that hater bubble, Destiny 2 continues being very successful and Marathon had huge numbers on its reveal and in people applying for the closed alpha limited to NA.

Sure, Marathon had some issues and would welcome a delay to launch the game in a better state. Pretty likely the game -as many GaaS- will release in a pretty rough/barebones state and over time will keep improving and expanding reaching a great state some time after launch. Nothing rare or specially bad, it's pretty common in the gaming industry. They'll solve that.

This all sounds like a nice plan…until something goes wrong.

Lol no.
Art is bad, characters are ugly, it seems to watch a worst version of the incredible crashdummies cartoon. And yes, the style is bland and everything looks unfinished.

Well, it's what they already did until now.

Regarding Destiny 2, Lightfall underperformed causing changes in Bungie/Destiny management with some people getting fired and gave more time for the next expansion. As result, the next expansion The Final Shape was a huge success. The 2025 expansions got top 1 in preorders in most non-Asian PSN stores when preorders started. Destiny 2 keeps being a top 10 game in PC every single year.

The Destiny mobile game made with Netease is in beta and looks very good.

Regarding Marathon, its reveal got record numbers and a shit ton of people applied for their closed alpha limited to NA. The impressions of the alpha were good for an alpha, but at least that version (which could be months old) wasn't in a state of a game to be released in a few months. Which combined with the stolen art controversy may get the game delayed. But nothing dramatic, if they don't delay it they'll implement the remaining stuff and polish after launch as many GaaS did before (including Destiny).

This is exactly what i keep telling myself. The problem is that we don't even known what's coming. They used to announce titles, and if they take a while to come out, well, it is what it is. Now, now we know nothing. And it's been like that for some time. Impossible to be excited for the system and its future when there isn't a new GoW announced, and it's been years since Ragnarok came out.

Yeah. I also want a new Uncharted. Gruff Drake non girl-boss edition. Can't believe it's been almost 10 years :messenger_face_screaming:
