Oh I didn't know that. Is there any way to set that up via iCloud.com? I'm not using the Mac Address Book to store/organize my contacts. I tend to manage my contacts pretty much from my phone.
Just checked and there is.

Click the red tab with the two heads and it'll bring up the groups.

Down below in the Groups page, there are "+" and "Edit" buttons to create, delete and modify groups.

If you can't see that red tab, you might need to create a group in Address Book and sync back. I don't think the iPhone showed me the group panel until I did that.

Sync 'em up to a computer, make groups in the application you use to have contact info on your computer, sync it back. It will preserve your newly-created groups.

Given the people going "oh god, it erased my stuff", and given how simple it is, I'm getting the impression that NO ONE syncs. Which seems kinda silly.

I "sync" periodically. But it's mostly just a backup, not a sync. I tend to do everything from my phone and not have a need to sync anything, so a backup is sufficient. Not sure what I would need to sync often either. I never use contacts from my PC so it's completely managed on my phone.

My wife on the other hand never syncs or back up. She doesn't even keep her apps up to date because both are inconvenient for her since she never plugs her phone into her laptop.

I think in Windows, it has a Windows Contacts, will that let me create groups? Why doesn't Apple just let me do it on my phone?

My backup file is only 30MB. The 5GB limit exempts things like the camera roll, so how can backing up even approach 5GB? Does app data add up that fast? I'm curious what other types of things end up in that file since I've never opened it.

Camera roll DOES count against your limit.

Awesome! Thanks!

Edit: Is there no scroll bar for contacts through iCloud.com? I try to find it but holding down the mouse button grabs the contact.

She's right; syncing is crap. Honestly it's better to do it as little as possible.

Well this is the perfect firmware update for her, to make these devices PC free

Oh no I agree; I'm actually pretty happy about iCloud backing her stuff up for her. The only problem is I haven't figured out the best way to handle her Camera Roll yet which is at like 4.8 gigs so iCloud doesn't help her there.

It's good for my mother too. She's had her iPhone for awhile, we've synced music for her a few times, showed her too. Explained the concept of syncing: that you had to come back to the PC "well" for new things. And even still, last time we mentioned connecting to a computer she was like "What??? Why would I connect a PHONE to a COMPUTER?" :P

Any (official) way to activate multitouch gestures on my ipad1? I found this, but I never jailbreaked any of my iOs devices and had no intention to do so.

This is really a total dick move.

When I sync the 3GS or 4S?
I never kept my songs synched, I only put them on manually.
When I got the summary tab of iTunes (on my Windows 7 computer) when connected my iDevice, it asks if I want to sync to the computer or to iCloud and it will remember these options for future

There is. I'm scrolling up and down the All Contacts right now.

A very slow scroll, might I add.

How can I get iMessages to sync perfectly? I can text my brothers phone from my iPad. He can text my iPad from his phone. But when he texts my phone, I don't see it on my iPad. When he texts my iPad, I don't see it on my phone.

How to get it to sync?

Goddamit why is the music app so fucking terrible now? There's no option to easily access a podcast subscriptions iTunes page from within the music app anymore.

What the fuck.

Where is it? The only thing I can do is touchpad scroll. I can't drag scroll like anything normal.
OH, YOU MEAN THAT.

Yeah, I don't see it either.

Edit: wait no, there it is. It's on the right, a small grey scrollbar. Draggable.

can someone please tell me what the @me.com mail is used for? Does apple really think im going to tell all my contacts that i have a new mail adress? or is it just some internal / i message thing?

Facebook has been trying their own @facebook email recently, and it's equally doomed to niche status. There hasn't been a real reason to switch mail providers since Gmail.

It'll work with any mail.. and it's not really getting pushed from iMac so much as the phone just looks at the mail server by itself.

No joy with the update, all last night was getting the 3200 error, this morning this:

"an error occurred while backing up this iphone (-1407)"

Wont progress past this section.

Wow, this update is a nightmare.

Anyway, does anyone know how I'm supposed to set things up if my wife and I have separate phones but use the same apple ID? I'm not sure how this is supposed to work, since I don't want our iCloud stuff getting mixed and what not.

Can someone answer me this - I don't sync my stuff cause I use itunes on my wifes computer for my ipod. Itunes tells me that if i update to ios5 all my shit will be wiped. If I backup my ipod now, then update to ios5 - will restoring from backup give me all my old shit back but in ios5, or does it revert back to ios4?

Each of you use a unique Apple ID for your iCloud. This won't affect sharing an Apple ID for apps.

Restoring from backup doesn't factor in the OS. It just manages your data. It'll just add all your data back into the new OS.

:( would be nice if my imac would get notified if i have already read a mail on my phone or replied etc. Now i will get everything twice / separate my reply "history".

What e-mail service do you use?
@gmx.de

Can we view pictures on the iCloud website? I haven't backed up any yet (cam roll exceeds 5GB), but I ain't even seeing a Picture icon.

Haha weird, oh well. You using OSX or Win? Maybe that's the difference. I'm on Win7 at the moment. Thanks for all the help.
That could be it. I'm on OSX.

You're welcome~

@gmx.de

Check your e-mail service setup to see if you can find a way to keep them in sync. Another idea is if your e-mail service allows automatic forwarding, setup a GMail account and forward it to that, and then point your iMac and Phone to the GMail account and that will keep things in sync.

The picture icon shows up when you turn on Photo Stream. I believe you can view them from the site with whatever photo stream puts up, not the backup from the camera roll though.

I don't think you can. I have been messing with iCloud all night. From what I can tell. Every picture you take/upload to your Mac after you enable iCloud will be put into your photo-stream. Anything before that is just being backed up for "backup" purposes.

I'm just dumbfounded that Camera Roll counts against your limit. Some 1080p recordings here and there and BAM, you'd be over the limit before you know it. Doesn't help that 4S doesn't let you downgrade to 720p even.

If you any mail service on a server, like Gmail, then it doesn't matter which device you access it from. It has the same history, replies, drafts, etc on either one.

I'm not seeing a picture icon on iCloud.com here even though I have it enabled. I only have icons for Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Find My iPhone, and iWork (which I haven't ever used).

They probably did it because of people like me.

2,815 photos and 42 videos. Y'all better believe I press that snap button.

So is it true that there is no way to manually delete photos from the photostream individually? Even if the original photo is deleted? Because I can't figure out a way.

Yeah, I know. I just spent all night moving all my iPhone pics (since 2009) to iPhoto and deleting them off my phone. Since they are then put into photo stream they will still be there. Seems like this will be the normal practice from now on.

Wasn't sure about this, when I was testing the Photostream on my iPod Touch 4g, I recorded a quick 10 sec clip in 720p... should that video eventually end up in the photostream on my other devices and computer? I waited probably a minute or so it never showed... but I guess it's the PHOTOstream so I dunno why it would be there...but still

Just tried to put a video into my photo stream using iPhoto and was told "photo stream does not support video"

Can't you just go to Podcasts, select the podcast and then select "get more episodes" or do you mean something else?

From what I hear once you put a photo on photo stream its permanent which is weird.
