Wait what? Like "Play this song?" That's bad.

Ya, some stuff makes sense, heck even makes it easier to expand later on, but I can't set an alarm or create a shopping list without being connected to the net?

I guess that will be a feature of the iPhone 5. LOL.

"New and improved offline Siri processing!"

Wait, what, really?

Here's the direct quote:

We also hope that Siri's siblings will be able to run offline, because today's girl requires a 3G or WiFi connection to do anything. Even the simple voice commands that were available in iOS before no longer work offline, and if you happen to be one of the few who actually used those commands to change tunes while offline, you're sadly going to have to find another way.

Does the free space on box.net work as server space? I'm looking to contribute to that ring tones thread.

I just ran "Find My iPhone" and it took 29 minutes to buzz...

Settings > Messages > switch iMessage to off.
That should stop iMessage messages being sent to your iPhone, and should only arrive on your iPad.

Wait, I don't think this is what you want to do. This will turn off your iMessage completely on the phone.

What you need to do (I think) is just edit the "Receive At" field. On your phone, you can receive at both your mobile number and your Apple ID/email. On your iPad, if it is WiFi only, you should only have the option to receive at your Apple ID/email.

So on your phone, remove the email address that receives on your iPad.

Siri has been confirmed that it will run on iPhone 4 using a jailbreak

Originally, there was some speculation that Siri required a dual core processor (A5) to run. It appears that this is not the case.

I find is ridiculous that the iPhone 4 didn't get this, I may jail brake my phone for this though

Voice Control is still there if you turn off Siri. Nuance has always been server side.
Is there a Voice Control command and a Siri command to toggle Siri on and off, respectively? That should have been a nobrainer.

I'm contemplating backup up all of my photos on my iPhone (4 years worth!) and taking them off my phone so I can use iCloud without having to pay for more than 5 gigs. Anyone have an easier way other than just tranferring them to a folder on my PC?

Haha, I should have made avatar bets with the doubters
and bought an iPhone 4 instead

Wholly cao, the orientation lock on the iPhone is still portrait only?! A jailbreak for the iPhone 4S can't arrive soon enough.

I know, I'm checking just about every day. That stupid 20mb limit and having to type my password every time I download an app is really pissing me off.

The notification bar was worth it though.

I really really really really want the new SBSettings or UISettings. SBSettings cooked into Notification Shade? Thankucomeagain.

Yeah. My requirements are pretty low; all I want is SBSettings, to remove the 3G limit and to have icons in the status bar when I get an email or text. That's pretty much it.

Anyone get wireless sync to work? i have my laptop and ipad on the same wireless network, already checked the button for wireless sync but the ipad does not show up in itunes.

What the hell...my option to turn on iTunes Match has disappeared from iTunes 10.5 release.

edit 2: there's a 10.5.1 beta that includes iTunes Match support. Woot.

agreed. Apple GREED

First, why is selling software bundled with hardware greed? People knew that when they bought their 4 that it did not come with Siri. Siri is software specifically bundled with the 4S. There is nothing wrong with what Apple is doing. Would it be great if they gave it to everyone for free? Yeah, however they may not be able to do so anyway. Apple is very precise with their accounting, and how they form project budgets. In the past Apple has had to charge users nominal fees for things such as wifi upgrades, FaceTime, iOS updates, etc. this may influence Apples decision on including Siri in the iPhone 4S rather than as a part of the iOS 5 update, which was funded by a pool of money they saved from our initial purchases of iPhone 4, Touch, iPad, etc.

Some site had a good theory for it: Siri is still a beta and limiting it to 4S phones ensures only a couple million people are hitting the servers instead of 10 million.

I bet we'll see it on the iPad 2 in a software update when the iPad 3 comes out.

The reason why is because without Siri there's barely anything to market iPhone 4S with. It can be a great upgrade under the case, but it's pretty difficult to showcase that. Siri works.

You're not exactly helping Apple look un-greedy.

Shall they simply stop accounting? Don't think that would look good of them in the eyes of the SEC and FASB, which makes sure Apple's money is accounted for by the rules the stock holders voted on.

Haven't they stopped charging for iOS updates now? Clearly they're not getting sued by Uncle Sam over it.

Not surprising at all.

So back when MobileMe existed, you could actually pick and choose photos to load into your MobileMe account, and then they were viewable from any system through a website address. Is this not possible with icloud? I know that photostream will take anything, but to view it it has to be a iOS device or a separate program, not web based.

EDIT:
Also, if you want to back up the photos on your iOS device, I know you can plug into iPhoto and export them out. But since Photostream is just an automatic syncing to every device that you can't manage, I don't want to do that. So for just exporting out pictures, I guess you just have to plug back in and manually sync to iPhoto like before?

I haven't kept up with this thread, but are other iPad 1 users experiencing sluggish performance since updating to iOS 5? Everything seems to take an extra beat now, from locking/unlocking to loading iBooks. It's a shitty trade off. I'd almost rather they stopped updating the older hardware so it could keep doing what it always did as slickly as ever. I love my iPad, and wouldn't feel a pressing need to upgrade at all if this update hadn't aged it overnight.

That's because they set aside x dollars from every device sold. So say they sell a product for 100 dollars, and it costs 60 dollars to build, that means thy have 40 dollars part of which they keep, part of which they put into support, and part of which they put into further improving the device. If they set aside 10 dollars for improving the device over 2 years that means that they have a budget of 5 x amount sold. If they sold 1 million devices, they have 5 million to pay for the r&d per year. If they want to introduce a feature they just got via an acquisition of a company for 7 million, they couldn't, it would exceed the yearly budget. There are exceptions, but since they require board approval, thru don't always happen.

My point is that seeing as they seem to have dropped the practice now, it would imply it's a situation that's easily avoidable.

Crack. Dont smoke it kids.

Apple makes billions in profits each year. They can afford it.

The people who are being greedy are the ones who keep expecting/wanting new features and software to be free.

Admittedly, Apple did purchase what was existing, but they still jiggered with the implementation and integration, and likely scaled up the server side.

It doesn't really bother me that Siri isn't on all iOS 5 devices, let's just not pretend its not primarily a marketing reason rather than some backwards ass financial reason from an absurdly wealthy company.

I still can't receive texts as it says my SMS inbox is full. It's not full! Anyone have this problem?

I struggled with this issue all day yesterday. Apparently iOS5 has a message limit cap around 60k. I deleted a number of text message threads and got my count down to around 20k (verified with Phone View software). I then did another backup of the phone and reloaded the iOS5 software. Seems to have corrected the issue but I'm still scratching my head as to why Apple would suddenly implement a SMS limit.

Oh, the insanity of it all.

Two things I've noticed about iOS 5:

1. There are some issues with the Music app. Cover Flow is buggy. I rarely use it but it so happens today was one of the days I did and it crashed (I tried again and it was slow and jittery every time). MOST IMPORTANTLY, there also seems to be some issues with controlling the music via the lock screen. All the buttons take a while to respond.

2. New emojis have been added!

I'm glad there's now information about the apps you have installed and how much space they are taking up.

Also, Screw you Melbourne transport guys, your app uses 370mb!

I also noticed your complaint in #1 about controls from the lock screen. I just did a restore of the phone hoping it would clear it up (I know...a bit too hopeful). Hopefully there's a 5.0.1 soon to fix some of these issues.
