iOS 7 | Flatness Is a Good Thing

Just got a message on my iPhone 4 that 7.0 is "available". Why's Apple pushing for people to download 7.0 on the 4? Isn't the UI in general horribly unoptimized on the 4 or was that just the beta builds?

I really don't get watch Match and the Music app do sometimes. It picks album covers for artists, but doesn't display a ton of them even though if I go into that artist those covers are viewable just fine. Also I've got one cover that seems like it didn't download/upload properly and has just a square of color from the album in the corner. No matter how many times I change it on my mac and update match it just won't update on my phone.

Honestly 7 ran better on my 4 than 6 did.

My friend has an iPhone 4 and also runs better than iOS 6

Wtf does anyone know how to clear Safari history? I don't need some family member seeing my porn searches in here. Used to be easy to just use 'clear history' in ios 6 and they'd disappear, now the sites still pop up if you type them into the URL bar.

Use private browsing. It is easier than ever now that the option is in the tabs view.
I know this doesn't fix your existing problem but it can prevent it in the future.

Why don't you browse incognito?

Edit: beaten.

Is there a consensus on the ipad 3 yet? I have it jailbroken but that's not the most important thing to me. I'll just jailbreak again when the time comes. Performance. That's what I'm worried about.

Nice wallpaper. Do you have a link to it?

Wow. Apple advertised even during their press conference that iOS 7 would allow unlimited tab openings.

It still doesn't matter because I'll never open 25 tabs at the same time anyway.
I don't recall them saying it would be unlimited at WWDC. As I remember they said the old, restricting limit would be removed and you would be able to have more tabs open at a time but not unlimited.

It's one of the stock wallpapers in 7.

I've never managed to make a FaceTime audio call work. Anybody have successes with FaceTime audio and video on iOS 7?
I use FaceTime constantly with my girlfriend as we're in different countries at the moment, it has always worked fine even during beta. FaceTime audio is fantastic, really good quality even cross country and on cellular with minimal data usage.

Just had a strange bug where my iMessage was turned off on my iPhone, all my previous messages turned green and any new message I tried to send went as SMS. The iMessages I recieved instead went to my iPad.

I've turned the phone on and off and it's back to normal but it was a bit strange.

Sounds good. I haven't extensively tested it but it never worked in the two times I tried it.

Anyone else getting this message with YouTube videos? I am getting it with every embedded video. How can it be fixed?

I'm not getting that same message, but I am experiencing issues with YouTube for the iPad.

I open it up, and opening page isn't formatted properly. No thumbnails, text scrambled everywhere, essentially looked broken.

It fixes itself a few seconds after I scroll down or up.

I wonder when/if they will bring this style to OS X. I'm thinking it may be abit too extreme for a computer OS, I like what Mavericks is doing by removing the skeumorphism but keeping it sort of "neutral".

And a flat menubar would be like Windows' taskbar, especially if you enable transparency.

I'd love for OS X to take design cues from iOS 7, personally.

I've really been wondering about this, too. Right now the two OS's feel very different.

...hate me...
I think there's no way they won't make 10.10 flat. There's just too much of a UI design disconnection going on right now. Icons, iMessage speech bubbles, everything really. Even iCloud has been updated. And iWork will be updated soon, by iPad's event is my guess.

That will be the massive thing for OS X next year.

Hopefully next year's OS X does. I imagine Apple didn't have adequate time with the whole cutting Forstall thing in late October.

Just think, if Forstall never messed up on Maps and refused to apologize, we may have never gotten this flat UI. At least, not at the same extremity Ive is pursuing.

He would have been gone either way. Maps was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I'm saying if his mess-up on Maps never happened.

yeah, and he’d still be gone and ios7 would still look exactly like this.

the issue was that he sowed discontent with other execs. the Maps thing, like Tobor said, is not what got him ousted. there was a manager for Apple Maps team and he got fired.

It's sort of shitty because, if you hear what old Apple teams - particularly the initial iPhone and Safari teams say - Forstall was the reason a lot of shit got done. Apparently he was the one that advocated hardcore for using WebKit.

And yet all the general tech public associates him with is leather stitching.

The Today traffic estimations, is that only triggered by calendar appointments? Or is it more like Google Now, where it just starts giving it to you based on where you tend to go at certain times?

My mother just called me to, among other things, rant about iOS 7. She hates how they basically just rolled out an update thats going to be required for compatibility that changes all of the interfaces she's used to, so now she has to learn a whole new set of routines. Says all of her friends feel the same way.

What say you?

It's funny, but yeah, as mentioned, like 90% of the changes are cosmetic. A friend asked where Spotlight was (I know some say power user feature, but people DO seen to use it - I guess it is in lieu of high level customisation) and how to kill an app in the multitask view and I said you have just stumbled upon the two big things in that 10 % actual change.

I guess Emojis. If you look at the picture mrkgoo posted you can see an apple icon beside his "Apple" for that folder.

How did you get those icons/emoticons on your folder names?

Yup, emoji keyboard. I label every folder (I have many on my other pages, including genres for games) with a dinky little emoji. It's fun deciding which one!

As for the apple, I believe it's a 'symbol' as in in a character for a particular font on Macs. I just copy and pasted it when labelling that folder on a mac when my iPhone was plugged into iTunes.

Man I love how the wallpaper you choose makes such a visual impact in certain areas of the OS

Yah! It's mostly cool - but some places like the transparency on notification centre it looks like multicolour vomit.

Nice wallpaper. Do you have a link to it?

It's one of the ones provided by Apple! Is it not on your selection in iOS 7?

Ah, I actually forgot about that. I remember how Bob Mansfield had retired, and then returned soon after Scott was fired.

OS X itself was "extreme" when it came out. Coming from OS 9's UI which was vastly different. Heck, Windows changed its UI completely three times in 10 years. I think a big change and more iOS7 cues in OS X could be really nice to look at. I even really like that screenshot above. OS X will have been out for 14 years and is currently about to go on its 10th incarnation. Until now it's just been gradual changes over time. I hope there's a big change next year.

Sounds to me like Steve Jobs was the one keeping all those guys in check. Once he died, a shit storm ensued.

I just read a comment like that from a WWDC 2011 video. Steve and Scott had a strong relationship, dating back to the NeXT days. Steve also was a big believer in the skeumorphic UI. This is probably why Scott wasn't cut earlier.

A big graphical change like this would certainly warrant something like an OS 11 monicker... ;)

(Without actual having to change anything and maybe ward off naysayers asking what can a hypothetical 11 really bring?)

Leopard and Lion were big changes to the OS X platform. Leopard made some great improvements to the UI, with the removal of Carbon, adding a reflection to the dock, and adding transparency to the Menu Bar. Lion also made some modifications such as the smaller traffic lights.

If Apple goes the flat route with OS X, they need to ease the consumers in like they have with iOS. Making one big, unfamiliar leap will upset the majority of users (Windows 8).
