I've got a message about iMessage.

Does the messages have to be sent to the Apple ID to be free? Or can two people with iOS 5 send messages to each other's number and still be free?

My wife just got her first smartphone and I'm trying to understand the usage details.

Black or white, people? Getting one on Friday after I get paid. Coming off a 3GS.

White.

imo the white "pops" and makes the phone look more stylish/modern than the black.

But I think a good part of it also has to due with the fact that all of my phones in the past have been black and therefore I'm tired of that color.

The white color hides finger prints and overall it just looks crisp and modern.

I'm into modern minimalist art and the white iPhone 4(S) definitely fits that mold/style.

Couple (hopefully) quick questions. I posted this in the iOS thread but I think it was passed by and forgotten :p

In iOS, if you do a Google search or find a place via the Maps app (or another app that supports it), is there a button that says "navigate" or something that will bring up a turn-by-turn GPS app? Android did this very well and would be a feature I miss.

Also, if you try to perform an action that can be done with one or more apps, does iOS ask you which app you want to use? I can think of an example, again with directions, where I click on an address in the Android Browser, and a dialog box pops up asking which app I want to use to view the address, and it was unlimited. It gave me the option of "Browser", "Google Maps", or "Waze", which are three apps I had that could navigate OR display addresses. Just wondering if iOS can do this.

My last question is about file systems. Is it true that I'll have zero access to my phone's file system? So that means I'm completely unable to use an iPhone as a USB thumb drive, correct? I'm assuming there are also no apps on the App Store that allow you to have access to this either, right? Just wanting to make sure there is NO WAY I can drag and drop files from my computer to my phone without iTunes.

There is no turn-by-turn GPS app built into iOS - there are third party apps you can get from the App Store, but they aren't integrated with the OS. Apple is working on their own maps stuff so there's a decent chance of turn-by-turn coming at some point (probably iOS6 next year), but nobody knows for sure when that is.

As for the second question, no again. It uses the default apps that Apple created - click a phone number and it'll launch Phone, an address would launch Google Maps, etc..

Not sure about the file system question.

I have a black, and my wife has a white. They both look completely awesome and I can't decide which I like more. I'm fine with my black, though.

An iMessage text is always free of charge (insert disclaimer for data usage rates).

When an iPhone activates iMessage, not only its iCloud Apple ID will be registered as a valid iMessage recipient, but also its phone number (pending validation). You can also add other email addresses. Every text sent from an iMessage enabled device to any of these addresses will be pushed into your phone free of charge.

Hey, thanks for answering! So, basically, there's no way for me to set default applications because Apple's apps are always the default? Got it. Just wondering. Kind of a shame, though.

I hope you're right about Apple making their own turn-by-turn. That would be BALLER, and hopefully come with a 5.1 update :)

No white phones (my gf wants white) anywhere in the city but called an Apple store in the north bay and they told us to come on down, they have them. Got there only to be told that they just closed the line. Bummer!

Did you end up swapping your 4S for a white model?
No, even though one Apple Store guy told me they could swap it in-store a few others have subsequently told me that they can't in fact do that. I probably could if I pushed enough but I think the universe is telling me to stop being such a pussy and be happy with my original choice. I did get a white bumper, though!

Off to activate my phone now. Really interested and a bit anxious to see what my experience on Verizon will be like. Slightly envious of some of the HSPA+ speedtest screen caps that are being posted, but then I remember how miserable I was all the time on AT&T.

BTW in my experience today at several stores the white is by far the more popular model, so people who are getting it because they think it's going to stand out more in a crowd are probably in for a letdown. BLACK IS THE NEW WHITE!

I agree. All of my gadgets are black. I went with white just for a change. Both options are super slick though.

Every time I've asked what color someone is getting they always say white because its "different". Ironic they're buying the most popular phone in the world then. Even more ironic that white is probably going to be everywhere now.

Gaf, one of the three iPhones I brought home today gives me this in iTunes:

Is there a fix or am I stuck going to an Apple Store?

That's what I saw here in New York as well. Along with hundreds of Chinese people trying to buy tons of them at a time.

I was coming from 3G White 16GB, so I stuck with White.

White + Orange bumper, as mentioned before in this thread: the iBook dream lives on.

You wonder why Apple isn't making several different colors of this like they've done with devices in the past. A blue iPhone would be HOT. Then again, cases take care of that

Coming off a Blackberry Bold, this 4S is hot shit. It's like going from a Windows 3.1 box with 28.8 dial up to a 2011 Mac Pro with fiber Internet.

It's way faster, the basic apps are far more useful, and the virtual keyboard is a non issue. Great, great phone.

Couldn't agree more, coming from a Blackberry Storm2. It is so nice to have an actual "smart ohone" and actually use my phone for more than just calls.

Actually what finally swayed me off the white iPhone today was outside the Apple Store while we were looking for one for my girlfriend. There was a guy who'd just bought one standing outside playing with it. It was a white model and he was absolutely one of the douchiest looking posers I've ever seen in my life. And I live in San Francisco.

Bahahaha. That's awesome.

I'm hoping to be less douchey when I get mine, I'll be putting one of those aluminium backplates on. Hopefully that has negative douche cred.

Siri is seriously changing my life. I know I said this already but today I was able to manage all my text conversations quickly while having Siri create reminders for me for this week.

It does seem to drain the battery pretty bad but I charge every night (alarm clock dock, I just use it as a charger / night clock now though) so it won't make a difference to me.

Since the 4S is the 5th iPhone... right?

::shrug shoulders::

I think they should dump the numbers and have names for the future iphones.

Its the 6th iphone but according to the way they are naming, it would be the 5.

No, according to the way they are naming it, it would be iPhone 6. iPhone 4 was the fourth phone and it debuted iOS 4. The next iPhone will be the sixth phone, and the 4S already debuted iOS 5.

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S.

Your theory falls apart with the iPhone 3G.

I think they'll just avoid the whole clusterfuck next time by simply naming it iPhone. It'll either unofficially be classified by generation like the iPod or by year like the MacBook.

We don't really know what their naming method is yet. They elected not to call the second-generation iPhone 2 or 2G for obvious reasons (confusing with its 3G capability). The improved revision was the 3GS. When it came time for a major re-design in the iPhone 4, it happened to be both the fourth version overall and an appropriate number for the "next-generation" iPhone. We don't really know which of these was the naming convention they used.

I agree its too early to tell, but i highly doubt they go from 4S to 6. I think they either go iPhone 5 or do away with number all together.

The iPhone sounds about right. Its been long enough since the 1st Gen, so they could just reboot the name now.

Man i cant wait My iPhone 4S arrives tomorrow, Also just want to know what are some cases to get for it.

I really like the incase snap I grabbed for mine. Very unobtrusive but still makes me feel like I can use it normally without having to baby it much. Also it comes in clear and frosted so you don't completely cover up the stainless steel or the back.

Apple store downtown SF completely out of white. No shortage of black. Very short line.

There was a story on redmondpie.com about certain US Apple Stores already carrying unlocked iPhone 4S models -- this store probably would be one of them, but did you happen to check?

So with so many getting white would it be safe to say that that alone will more than likely make people a good number of people say, "that person has a 4S!"?

(not that I care).

What? Your theory falls apart with the 3G since they didn't name it the iPhone 2.

Honestly, neither of us have compelling arguments for the next phone being named (or not being named) the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 makes more sense than iPhone 6. Why would they skip 5 for no reason? They named the second iPhone 3G because of....3G.
