The iPhone is the best phone because the enticement and promise of more customizability and extended functionality isn't as important as actually using and enjoying the phone.

People obsess so much over what their phones CAN do, rather than what they actually DO do with a phone. Apple has prioritized and emphasized the latter, and that's what make the iPhone so great.

Is it okay to turn off "cell network search" in location services? What is the purpose of this?
As far as I know, that isn't a standard thing. I don't have it on my phone (AT&T) at least.

I can use an iPad (first gen) charger to charge an iPhone 4S without causing anything to melt/explode, right?
yes

I don't know. Imo for a long time the iPhone wasn't actually enjoyable to use at all (notifications for example completely broke the experience) but many people just hang onto it for the apps i.e. they're using the iPhone for what it CAN do. Even if WP7 or webOS offered a great experience out of the box many people say they won't get it because it doesn't have a game or app that they are interested in, or might be interested in.

Completely agreed, Greyface. Though some of the stuff they've added since I left have made it slightly more livable. Its still not that great of a communication experience though. I mean, I use these devices to communicate above all else and if I were to pull a letter grade out of my ass the 4S gets about a D for communication facilitation while I'd give the Droid a B+.

Push notifications are ABSURD. You know, they'd be great for non-essential things like god knows what. (for some reason I can only think sports scores or something, but who even likes sports anyway?) But for vital services like Gtalk and Twitter I've had nothing but headaches so far.

Other aspects of the experience are like a pleasant sex dream compared to Gingerbread's sleep paralysis nightmare though.

People that do things with their phones beyond Internet/Email/Text (read: apps) should always pick an iPhone. Always. If all someone wants to do is basic crap, then sure, get whatever phone you want.

More or less serious about that statement. iOS is THEE platform for apps. And I loves me my apps.

I think other OS's have their good bits and bad bits...iOS is no different. But I like having the sleekest hardware running the best software.

Yup, my bread and butter apps are amazing. I spend about all my time in reeder, tweetbot, and verbs. All three are like the epitome of incredible UI design. I grin everytime I open tweetbot. Reeder too, Oh My God. I love waking up to Reeder.

Bigger screen is all that is missing for me to bring iOS back into my flip-flop phone cycle. I'm actually partly worried that they'll increase the screen size tomorrow and make my decisions more difficult.

Jtwo you lucked out going from a 3.7", which is almost a rarity among Android now (which I also don't agree with, they should keep that size around for variety).

Yeah, its amazing what an anomaly the Droid's formfactor ended up being. The iPhone screen is shorter and fatter than the Droid's screen. It took a little bit to get used to.

For some reason my battery went from 100% battery life while charging to 93% while is was still charging. Any ideas what's up with that?
Depends on what you're using your phone for, while charging. I know on my old 3G, heavy tethering activity used power at a faster rate than it could charge from the wall. If you weren't using your phone for anything, however, that would seem odd.

I've been reading a TON more since I got my iPhone. The screen is actually quite a bit better than my OG Droid's screen. Which says a lot because that screen is fantastic. Though, there is no better way to expose the not-perfect viewing angles of the screen than with iBooks.

  • iBooks needs to be able to turn off notifications
  • You need to be able to set a default size for photosharing. Its bullshit it prompts me to choose a size every damn time I send one out.
  • the quickapp switching panel needs to be accessible from the lockscreen somehow
  • its weird being sent a picture someone else has taken of themselves with an iphone in the mirror. its like the iphone is the mirror or something.
  • the volume buttons rattle (at least I think its the volume buttons
  • I SWEAR apple configured the vibration juuust right so that it tickles your finger tips.
  • I want to delete the newsstand icon
  • still training myself to run Wikipedia queries through spotlight
  • there needs to be instances of safari. so when I click the gmail webapp icon its completely siloed off from my typical gaf browsing session.
  • I've noticed the GAF webapp doesn't highlight threads ive created on the subscription page, but it does when viewing the forums proper
  • not having a notification LED sucks
  • Battery life isn't any better than my Droid. almost identical in fact. I've had it die twice almost in exactly the same time frame as my droid
  • push notifications create all kinds of fucked up behavior. ill get a notification and click on it and open up the IM app and send off a message before it even loads the message that popped up to begin with.
  • its completely batshit insane that the videos ive captured dont show up on the videos app. but only under photos.
  • reminders.app is kind of the breakout hit so far. I use "remind me" and "take note" all the time with Siri. Boy I sure wish I could configure it to take note to some other app than the default note taking app though.
  • iMessage kind of rules
I thought you could use the flash as a notification light now

Really tempted to throw $400 right now and get a 64gb iphone. Just conflicted as an android fanboy =/.

I have a ton of music I want to carry with me. My iPod touch died a little while ago and android's music player and google music aren't working for me. Plus I loved the bike plus integration when I still had my touch. Help gaf. I dunno what to do.

Get in line. :-/

The update definitely improved battery life. With 5 hours of usage and 10.5 hours on standby, I have 50% of battery life left with the brightness setting set to about 90%.

Before the update, I would be at 50% of battery life after about 3.5 to 4 hours of usage.

If you really love your music, do it.

I can't see how you could be disappointed if you ended up getting one.

Received my 4S at last. Compared the screens of my 3GS (left) and 4S (right):

Is it normal that my 3GS (and also my father's 3G) is brighter at the same settings?

btw. sorry for the shitty quality.

There were stories about how the glue just needs to settle or something like that and it should go away. Not sure if that's what's going on here, but it looks like it's got a warmer tint to it which may point to that.

Same for me. I actually just compared my 3GS and launch day 4S yesterday, coincidentally enough.

Its normal, the 3gs has a cool blue tint and the 4 has a yellowy tint.
Its the same on my ipod touch 3rd gen and my iPhone 4.
It does give the impression that its darker.

Probably too early to say definitively, but my dad's 4s battery life seems to have improved dramatically since downloading the update last night. His phone went from draining completely in a span of 4-5 hours at work, to only losing about a quarter of battery charge over 9 hours or so. I had tried to turn off push and set manual fetching for mail, calendar stuff before to try to get the battery to last longer (to little benefit), but hopefully I can turn those back on now without his battery going back to sucking.

My AT&T order arrived in 3 days.

Somewhere down the iphone 4 line, apple changed the color scheme to a more "warmer" tone that looks yellow compared to the other screen. Some people prefer the cooler tone as the white looks more white and the colors just seemed sharper.

I made a post about it when I first received my 4s as IMO the warmer tone looked washed out in comparison to my old 4. However, I have gotten used to it and don't even notice it now. In fact, I would go as far as to say that I prefer the warmer tone. It is easier on the eyes.

If you ask around, there seems to be mixed reactions as to what color scheme is better and it usually comes down to what they got used to first.

The retina display always had a less intense backlight than the 3G and 3GS.

With the 4S Apple have also made the colour tone warmer. It bugged me at first. I got over it.

Mind you, I'm one of those weirdos who has his backlight at 0. :)

Side effect for the retina display. The higher the density of pixels, the more the light gets filtered between the led and your eyes. If they used the same brightness of led in both phones, it is only natural that the one with the retina display would appear dimmer.

Frankly I'm not convinced that you save all that much battery by having the brightness set that low. I have mine set somewhere around 70% with auto-brightness on, and get around 10% per hour of actual usage. (light games, twitter, reading, web, flash cards, dictionary, mail, etc). I think as long as you are somewhere between 40-70% brightness, you can expect about the same, maybe a little worse since it is a 4s.

Finally got my iPhone! It's good to finally have a smartphone. (First Apple product too!)

I was wondering if there was a way to classify videos?

Just got my 4s. Coming off my 3GS it was everything I hoped for and more. The speed difference is night and day. Surprisingly my wife is jealous even though she has a 4. The Siri and voice dictation stuff really is a game changer. I knew when Google came out the other day and said they underestimated Siri and apple that it was probably amazing. But really this is beyond anything that I could've imagined. BTW this entire post was typed by Siri.

People actually go that high? I'm sitting at 40%

What?? No...

I really wish auto brightness wasn't so jarring. It drives me crazy when it constantly changes.

Trying to update my ipad 1 from 4.3.something to 5.0.1. How the heck do I stop this thing from trying to backup? I don't have enough space on this drive for a backup and I don't have any extra drives. I just want to screw the backup and just update itunes. I downloaded some program called Backoff but it didn't do the trick. I guess it hasn't been updated to work with newer versions of itunes or something.

How's my battery life to you guys?

Using twitter, text, mail, safari, and gaming. All on wifi. About an even split mostly. Have push on for mail and notifications for most stock apps and a few third party apps.

Usage: 8 hours and 5 minutes
Standby: 14 hours and 43 minutes.

That is 100% to 0%. Full drain with phone turning off.

I just got Scribblenauts and Wonton 51.
I'm actually really excited to play Wonton 51. But I hate iPhone games. I haven't even played the other three games I bought. Something about playing games on a phone just sucks to me. I'd much rather play DS. But I like Ramen and Bullets and I ain't no suckaMC so hopefully Wonton 51 is the first game I really get into.

Something's wrong with the cellular data usage counter on my brother's phone. It's showing ~30GB but Verizon's website is showing ~30MB. What gives? It's accurate on my 4S but not on his. We haven't even had the phones for a month so how is it possible to even download 30GB over 3G in less than a month's time?

Not true overall, I directly compared another my 4S to another 4S.
My 4S was way more yellow where the other one was much more like the 3GS.

Still really considering it. But they are seriously taking 2 weeks to ship?

I got the whole "1-2 weeks" thing from Apple's site and mine shipped after 8 days. I got a 16gb, but I've known several people who've ordered the 32 or 64gb and those were shipped within 2-4 days. They just launched in some other territories this week and the holidays are coming up so I can't see the supply getting much better than this for a little while.
