Dang. Guess I'll stick with my 3rd gen touch then and hold out till next year.

What do you intend to use it for? If it's web browsing, email, music, videos, and iMessage then it's worth it for the retina display alone over the 3rd gen. If you want it primarily for games, then yeah you might just stick with your 3rd gen as it still runs games fairly well.

I wouldn't get this if I had a 4, as it is this'll be my first iPhone and I love the 4s design so it's perfect. Got a feeling they'll go back to the horrible rounded back with the next one.

I'll have to take a closer look, but can't I do most of this when I upgrade my 3rd gen to IOS 5? Besides the retina screen.

So I am on interfacelift looking for wallpaper and just noticed something very strange. They have listings for iPad 3 size wallpapers. The sizes are listed as 2048x2048 instead of 1024x1024. Just go here and click the resolution tab to select iPad 3. Very interesting.

It's also engadget. Most of all the people that caught a clip of the 4S unveil on the 5-o-clock news last night have never heard of engadget - these are the people Apple will be selling the 4S to, the technophiles that spend every second hating or loving Apple on the Internet only make a very small portion of Apple's market.

Oh, you're right. I forgot 3rd gen was getting iOS 5. Seriously though, the retina display makes a huge difference on that size screen. It's crazy clear and makes for reading magnitudes better.

I'm going to get this, but I don't feel as great putting in a two year contract now. I've been planning to get an iPhone for some time now, and I thought I would wait for this one. I'm disappointed, but what else is there to do? I just feel like it will be horribly outdated when 5 comes out.

I would get this. but if i get it now. I can only upgrade in 18 months (full upgrade price), which is in May 2013 and by that time iPhone 5 would probably be 5-6 months old (or even a year old) already and I would be regretting too much. Maybe I will hold on to this for one more year.

Every iteration makes the iteration before it look silly. Just upgrade every year!

The reactions to this product are really amazing

What kind of spoiled society do we live in, when a company updates it's product, and people feel ripped off because they had unfounded expectations?

The Tested.com article sums up my feelings pretty well. What more do you actually need from a phone?

What I love the most are the crowd that somehow feel that Apple owed them a "iPhone 5" and them not releasing one is straight up offensive.

But the 5 will be horribly outdated when the 5S comes out, so at some point you just have to hold your nose and jump in, otherwise you'll be waiting forever.

Mainstream media lol.

(CNN) -- Usually a cause for techno-euphoria, Apple's iPhone-a-palooza event on Tuesday had an unintended and unlikely effect: It made some corners of the Internet mad.

"LET'S TALK *NEW* IPHONE ALREADY!!!!!!!!" the Twitter celebrity @ijustine wrote during the company's much-hyped press conference, where it unveiled the iPhone 4S -- a phone that looks just like its predecessor, but is faster and has a better camera.

"Tim Cook is talking too much. I just need to know if I have to put pants on and run to the Apple Store righhttt now," she wrote closer to the start of the event, referring to Apple's new CEO, who was panned by many online as dull compared to Steve Jobs.

A better poll would be to ask "Do you currently have an iPhone 4, 3GS, other smartphone, or no smartphone?" followed by "Are you currently planning on getting an iPhone 4S, another smartphone model, or planning on sticking with your current phone?" and cross-tabulating the answers to the two questions.

Stump, if you ran for president, I'd vote for you.

Playing devil's advocate, we were owed a 4 inch screen, a new shape, LTE 4G, Wireless Charging, NFC, Improved Display, A5 Chip, 8-12 mpx camera, 60fps 720p, 1080p, bigger battery life

we got the bolded part (3) and did not get the others (8)

The reactions are understandable after the release of the iPhone4.

People somehow expected every release to be that big of a leap. I am not sure we will see a leap that big again (for resolution, speed, added features, look of the phone, etc.).

Right! And what I said in the iPhone Event thread was that somehow the phone culture has changed, and everyone wants to upgrade EVERY YEAR to a new one. Outside of a few very tech oriented friends (and I'm a techie!) most people I knew only upgraded every 3 years or so. Some kept their phones as long as they kept working. Suddenly now there is a culture of buying a new phone every year, or being disappointed because it wasn't a big enough leap?

those kinds of questions were actually asked in the poll. I just accumulated them into 3 out of 10 options in the link.

Well, every year I've been eligible for the upgrade, but now I don't show I'm eligible until November 11th.

New iPhone and Kindle Fire in the same week? Best.Week.Ever!

What are you talking about? Apple owed me a replicator and a direct neural implant. Fuck them for not following through on their promises of a better iPhone. :lol

It's been 16 months not just a year (and most people are eligible for upgrades after 18 months). The hype grew the longer Apple took to release this. Many of the people disappointed are 3GS owners who've been waiting ages and don't won't to be stuck on the 'S' cycle.

Wait, what? Why were you owed those things?

plus the fact that there were so many stories with images of the new shaped teardrop iPhone including its cases that it led to a meltdown.

apple doesn't owe anyone shit. just be glad they're making awesome products. or else we'd be stuck in blackberry-age.

The S cycle is the best cycle. I think I will wait for the iPhone5S just so I don't have strangers invading my space asking me if I have the new one for the first month or two it's out.

I was playing devil's advocate on behalf of those who were under the assumption they would get these things. Maybe I should have not used the word owed.

as someone said earlier this is a phone for 3GS owners who skipped iPhone 4. they will likely skip iPhone 5 as well because they will likely not be eligible for full upgrade price.

i went to a telus store today to put my name down for the 64gb white iphone 4s and i was the first.......BUT that's because the million other people on the list before me had reserved an "iphone 5"..so i seriously doubt i will be getting this anytime soon lol. ugh. unless a lot of them bail since it's not a case revision. i also guess i'm getting the 64gb which might be priced above most people so i'd be one of fewer to get one. i'm really not sure.

Wait... when is iPhone 5 coming out?

Wait, what? The original iPhone didn't have an App store? Wat! How the hell did you guys get all those icons and shit?

iphone 1 was a geek's wet dream even without the app store. when it finally came it was like... holy shit, i see the future.

Yep. And when you're one of the most valuable companies in the world and your stock drops, it's an instant buying opportunity for investors.

Well, I think people who bought the 4 are in a pretty good position.

I thought contracts were 2 years. A 3GS owner, if they bought day one, would be at their 2-year mark, so they'd be eligible for the upgrade price.

Am I wrong?

That sounds stupid. This is why you don't have pre-orders to a product that doesn't exist.

Not all of the competition has been slacking. Samsung released the Galaxy about the time of the iPhone 4, released the Galaxy II 11 months later and has dropped hints that the Galaxy III is coming in early 2012 all the while delivering the Nexus S and now gearing up for the Nexus Prime. Apple is now the biggest company in the world (going by market value) with one of the largest cash reserves, and they can't deliver an update to the iPod line or even create a similar iPhone line, in 16 months?!

contracts are 2 years but you are eligible for early upgrade (400$) in 12 months and full upgrade ($199) in 18 months

This is how Engadget polls (And all other dumb internet polls) always are. They are never going to change.

I'm one of those 3GS owners, and I think this is going to be a fantastic update. Can't wait to get one. This is a massive jump!

If Apple could survive the antennagate, I think they'll handle the 4GSgate just fine.

Seriously medias can be so drama queens these days.

Ok I should stop reading google news.
