Am I the first one to ask Siri this question!?

I believe they're cached until you delete the email, or it falls outside the limit you set. Mine is set to show 50 recent, so once the email becomes the 51st, it and the attachment is removed from the cache but left on the server.
Great, thanks!

Guys is there a reader app that will increase font size without stretching the page? I don't want to have to scroll side to side.

Edit: will instapaper convert PDFs?

Went to the apple store to buy my 4s today, there was a stupid long line so I bailed. Guess ill stop by again next week and hopefully the lines will be gone.

So I'm getting a 4S and I want my 3GS backup on my new iPhone. Is that possible? If not, what's the best option?

Yeah. Just select the backup to iCloud option in iTunes, and when you buy it at the Apple Store you can restore it right there over their wifi with your iCloud account. Or when you get home you can do that too.

The USB synching route is also still available if you are having it shipped to you.

Plug into computer, iTunes pops up, ask if you want to setup the phone as a new device or from backup. Done.

So a week later... and I'm still in love with my iPhone 4S and Siri. I don't even bother to open the reminders or calendar apps anymore, I set up reminders and appointments using just Siri now. So good.

Only complaint: battery is not as good as my iPhone 4's but still better than all of my previous phones (Treo, Helio Ocean, G1, Hero and 3G).

Which prompts me to ask: why didn't ITunes restore my camera roll and other settings from a recent backup and forced me to choose a backup from last week to get it all back on the new 4s? Weird.

After a below average day of battery life yesterday, I decided to run my 4S dry and charge it over night. Battery life has been fantastic today. Took it off the charger this morning at 6:00 AM and have done a couple of e-mails, used a couple of apps, and checked the app store for updates, and I'm still at 93% at 4:30 in the afternoon. I know that super light duty for the day so far, but I was happy to see it still above 90% this late in the day.

Hi folks. Never owned an iphone before and I'm capitulating (read: I keep adding it to my verizon cart and get cold feet and close the page haha) about taking the plunge for the 4S. But if I were to go through what data package would I want - 2gb ok or will I be cramped with that? Is the 5gb better or just overkill?

This isn't any easy question to answer without knowing what you plan on using your phone for.

But generally 2GB should be plenty for most users.

Do it!

The female Australian siri voice is pretty nice. I think I’ll leave it till I find a case where it doesn’t understand me.

In the UK, they get screwed with a boring dude’s voice.

Well nothing too outlandish. Probably just browsing the web when I'm bored and/or on the bus. Playing Words With Friends that sorta thing.

You're free to change the data package during the contract so I'd suggest you try a certain amount of data for a month, check your usage, then try another tier to find which fits you best. Personally, I feel that not having to worry about the data usage is a great weight off my mind and I'm happy to pay for the privilege even if I don't pass the limit during many months.

Any ideas on this? I found stanza but it looks like it doesn't work with iOS 5? Help!

Does anyone have any experience with the Tunelink? Are there better options out there?

Pricey. I bought a Sony head unit with built-in bluetooth for just $30 more than that.

I think you'll be fine with 2GB.

Any good cases SPECIFICALLY made for the 4S?

I really like the Speck Pixel Skin HD but the Ringer switch doesnt quite align with the hole...
The 4S is literally the same build as the CDMA 4. Any case designed for the CDMA 4 is specifically designed for the 4S.

So I think we are going to switch to Verizon tomorrow. The Sprint 3G speeds are atrocious. Coming from a N1 and then a MyTouch 4G, this is pitiful. I have ran a few tests here in Orlando along with Charlotte, and in both places I averaged about 100kpbs. 0.1mbps is unacceptable. I would go with AT&T, but I hear their coverage up in Gainesville is pretty bad. Cant be having that.

I set an appointment at the local Apple store. Is this the best course of action to make the switch? I'd rather deal with the switch in person just to be on the safe side, and I would rather not have to go 2 different places.

Instapaper doesn't do PDFs. Try ReadItLater. Which app did you use that stretches the page?

Just ibooks and adobe reader. I want it to look like an ebook. Reading regular pdfs on an iphone is a huge hassle unless it's in the right format

VisitableElf said:
Cool. THanks for the tip! Does it usually say on the box though?
Yeah, that part is tricky. Once the CDMA iPhone 4 was released most case designers created "universal" iPhone 4 cases. The difference is minor and is usually just a larger area for the mute button (which was moved slightly from GSM to CDMA models).

But you're right, I imagine it will say on the box.

EDIT: Actually, it might *not* say on the box unless it is specific for the GSM or CDMA model. I don't use a case, so maybe someone who has shopped for one can help out.

Oh I thought you meant web article reader apps. So... you want to reflow the text of a pdf while reading it on an iPhone?

I want my pdf to be readable w/o me squinting or zooming in and distorting the margins. Kind of like how the ebooks from the store are. I do not need all the extra options you get with ebooks. Just convenient reading without straining my eyes or getting dizzy from all the scrolling when zoomed in lol The occasional pdf is fine but I cannot read a real book on iphone unless it's in epub(?) format

I just downloaded a sample of my book from the store and it looks awesome. But I'm not buying it twice just to read on iphone lol

What's the best value for a monthly phone plan on this phone? I have been on AT&T for a decade but I've been using a blackberry pearl for six years, so I've never had a data plan. I've been looking at other phone plans and it is seeming Sprint is the cheapest plan at $69.99 (using the everything plus referral plan discount), but I am not one hundred percent sure. Hell, even staying on AT&T would cost me $65.00 or so a month for 2gb of data and unlimited text. Ouch. I am guessing Sprint is the way to go?

Edit: Wow. I just priced 2GB of data + 250 texts + 450 minutes of talk on Verizon for $74.99. That costs more than Sprint's 500 minutes plus unlimited everything.

If we're still taking surveys on this, first day starting with a full charge: 50% after 12 hours (3.5 hours usage). Can't complain. Listened to music on the way to work and back (about an hour total), various fiddling around and texting during the day, five-minute phone call.

Successfully converted my old iPhone 3G to be an AirPlay receiver.

Steps to do this:
1. Update your iPhone 3G to 4.2.1 in iTunes.
2. Jailbreak (Super easy instructions here)
3. Cydia -> Search -> AirServer ($5)
4. Buy, run, turn on "always on", set device name.
5. Tada!
6. Stick iPhone in standard iPod speaker doc.

Haven't decided if it's going in the kitchen or bathroom yet. So now I've got two AppleTVs, my Macbook Air (running the OSX version of AirServer), and my old iPhone 3G. AirPlay is really great when you start accumulating a device library enough to use it when, where, and how you please :D

Thanks for this! You mentioned it in a post a few days back and it really piqued my interest.

Gonna put multiroom audio in my house with a couple of iPod speaker docks. I have two old iOS devices I don't need. One for the bedroom.. one for the bathroom. :P why not?

Good thing is that their broken headphone jacks won't matter in a dock.

Finally! Been trying to reserve a 64 GB White unlocked model at my local apple store via the online process. Have been checking daily @ 8:50 to 9:10 with the constant refreshes - they always had every model EXCEPT the one I want. Finally just now, they listed the 64 GB white model. What was funny was after I finished my order, I checked the site again and my model was still there for a few minutes later. Crazy.

Will work the same way for a 2nd gen iPod Touch?

Download Calibre.
Add your PDFs.
Convert them to Epub.
Add to iBooks.

That should work.

Was still waffling on dropping Sprint but now, as long as I can do it Thursday or Friday (next days off) I'm doing it. They hit me with two activation fees and two "upgrade fees" ($140ish in fees) because the Sprint rep at the Apple Store had to switch the phones they had assigned to me to get my purchase to go through.

He swore up and down that it was right and that everything would be okay. Now I'm staring at a $300 first month's bill. Yeah, no, not for 200kbps down. We're not doing that. Unbelievable...

Sprints shitting the bed, heard they just insta killed unlimited 4G for their hotspot devices (not phones, but that is awful fucking ominous). Crap man. One of the other carriers needs to do like a weekend deal or something reopening unlimited data plans for a limited time so I can jump ship.

Question!

So I had posted earlier about the long line at the local apple store. If I do this reserve thing on apples site, do I still have to wait in that line? Or can I skip it?

Edit:

Saw up above someone said you can reserve it, but still not sure if I can skip the line as that site doesnt say.

Any other impressions from Sprint 4/4S owners so far?

Just interested in seeing if the initial strain put on their network by the recent influx of new users is starting to resolve yet or not.

I've heard a LOT of complaints from Sprint iPhone users on other forums, mostly about terrible data speeds.

I have heard a lot of pleasant things too, i have seen a lot of conflicting speed tests.

Sitting in a theater tonight with my phone in my jacket pocket - got out and the phone was warm and very dead. I assume a process ran amuck and ran the damn thing the entire time I was there. I thought the phone was completely dead when I got home, but eventually it turned on after charging for a bit. My 4 never behaved like that.

I'm on Sprint, but since this is my first smart phone, I have no idea what normal data speed should be like. But, I'd assume that it's just growing pains of having a mammoth new device sucking their power. Or, I'm totally wrong. I have no idea how any of this works.

My speeds on Sprint average around 0.42Mbps during the day. It's pretty bad. Plus I almost never have more than 3 bars signal anywhere I go (Omaha, NE). I've seen it drop to 1-2 a lot more than it has ever hit 4 bars, and I've never seen 5 on this phone.

I owned a Motorola Photon for a week and I was sitting at 4-5 bars almost all the time in the same locations. My Pre is just like my iPhone, 3 bars almost all the time.

I can't complain too much, since I do have a 25% discount. I'd be paying a ton more on Verizon or AT&T. Sprint did announce that Network Vision thing not too long ago, which sounds like it should improve the 3G situation, but I'm not holding my breath.

Got the Speck Candyshell in white today and it's freaking awesome! I also got the Zagg's invisible shield screen protector and it's amazing. Really happy with both of my purchases.
