Okay GAF, can you please help me with a noob question?

I'm downloading 3.0 GM right now, and I don't jailbreak or anything. I won't have to worry about a future official update doing anything harmful to my iPhone 3G right? Is that even possible?

Thanks!

Official 3.0 firmware next week should be the exact same as GM. You won't need to update it again. Once 3.0.1 is released by apple it should update fine for you.

Okay, thank you for that.

I shall have my 3.0 soon then.

Don't blame me if something breaks. :lol :lol

Kidding, you should be fine. Lots of people have already updated to 3.0. Just choose "Update" in iTunes, no need to restore.

Just to clarify, I believe the 3.0 GM is actually a Gold Master Candidate, so there's a small chance you may need to update again when 3.0 is officially released.

Not that it matters, upgrading to future firmwares will be fine, it's just that you can't downgrade back to 2.2.1 or earlier.

Is the downgrade a limitation of the GM, or when the official firmware hits, you also won't be able to downgrade too? I know in the past people have downgraded when a firmware has been acting up for them so I'd be kinda surprised if Apple now cut that off in case someone has issue with 3.0.

Oh good. I'm not a jailbreaker-downgrader (Just doing this scares me), so that's great news. Thanks!

Okay, so 3.0 is on my phone now, and iTunes is showing my last sync (a few mins ago), and it's saying 'Restoring iPhone from Backup', but the iPhoen is not syncing. I'm still able to open it and futz around with 3.0.

Should I disconnect and then re-try to sync?

Edit: Nevermind, my iPhone is saying 'Resotre in progress'.

I guess it took a minute or two.

Nope, you weren't supposed to downgrade from 2.x to 1.x either. There have been some solutions to downgrade from the 3.0 betas but it's very hacky.

Could somebody submit that Safari landscape thing as a 'bug'? I want that feature :/

I'm no technical wizard on this, but I believe it has to do with Apple updating the baseband of the iPhone with the 3.0 firmware and supposedly it won't let you go back. That being said, people DID downgrade from the 3.0 betas back to 2.2.1 using the jailbreaking tools so it is possible. I don't think you'll be able to downgrade through iTunes though without some jailbreak method.

It won't be exactly the same. I noticed some developer and debug settings in the options. Those won't be there on the public release. But it should be otherwise identical.

I installed the GM and went back to 2.2.1 on my 16gb 2g. I would have stayed with 3.0 but I gotta wait til the dev team provides an unlock.

If you mean the "Developer" setting under Safari that's always been there even in public releases.

I'm soooo tempted to get 3.0 right now, but I don't want to fuck anything up and be stuck in some tester mode or be unable to get real updates from apple in the future. Damn you, leakers!

It might be a little too late for your downgrade :/. Is your sim working now? BigBoss has a baseband downgrade tool but it only works on select versions

i love the little touches, the ability to fine tune forwarding is excellent on podcasts (still dont know why there is a mail icon tho).

Also the MMS works perfectly on right now in the UK. I've sent and receives pictures and audio clips, only thing I haven't tested yet is video messages.

Just downloaded that full version of that IM+ client too as it will have push notifications at launch of 3.0 (but they aren't on yet).

Ok, I have a question about contracts. Im currently on Verizon and my contract is up in August. I ordered my 3GS yesterday and put in a request to transfer my verizon number to my new phone. How will this work since I am still under contract with Verizon? Will I be able to get my old number without cancelling my verizon account?

You won't be locked in some "tester" mode.

Fuck, think about it this way. Let's say you ARE a legit developer and you've upgraded to 3.0 Gold Master. Then, apple at the last minute makes change to 3.0 for the "final" release and tells everyone to update to it. Are they REALLY going to prevent developer iPhones from updating to the latest release? Won't Apple always want their users to be running the latest firmware?

When I did it last year, ATT took care of it all. My contract was terminated and I paid some kind of prorated termination fee (only like $25-50) to Verizon. The prorated part depends on how long you have left on your contract.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think so. I was anxious to get my hands on my iPhone when the 3G came out, but my VZW contract still had a few weeks left on it. I ended up just grabbing my iPhone with a temp number so I could start having teh fun with it early. When my VZW contract was up, I hit the AT&T store and had the number ported over.

The downside is of course that I had two phone bills for a couple weeks, so that may be less tempting for you having a couple months left.

Edit: Hopefully iyox is right about the prorated thing. I've never heard that before.

Hmm. I guess ill just wait an see. I heard that the prorated thing is only for people who signed up with Verizon after 2006 or something (been on Verizon since 03). Hopefully if they are gonna charge me a lot to cancel they give me the option to just get a new number rather then making me pay an arm and a leg.

Does anyone know how much usage you get for a 2gb plan? is that a regular amount of data to have or is it to little for daily surfing and such.

I think the "after 2006" is when you signed your contract. Assuming you are on the typical 2 year contract, you should be ok. I would give Verizon a call; They can tell you exactly what the fee will be and you can decide from there.

2 GB of internet on the iphone is a lot.

I surf gaf on the phone every day and download apps, mail attachments (pics), etc over 3G and I typically get 300 - 500 MB monthly usage.

one month i streamed a lot more music and had 850 MB.

i'll need to break a gig one day. it's a goal i've set for myself

You can downgrade just fine. I know because I did so this afternoon. I don't know where people are getting this stuff, but it's impossible to brick your iPhone by firmware upgrades. You can ALWAYS downgrade via DFU mode in iTunes - no scary jailbreaking stuff required.

- Connect the iPhone to usb cable.
- Turn iPhone off.
- Hold Home-button + Power button for exactly 10 seconds.
- After 10 seconds, release the Power button (so you're only holding down the Home button).
- Do this until your PC detects a new USB device. Your phone is now in DFU mode.
- Download a clean 2.2.1 firmware from the internets (.ipsw file)
- Hold shift (PC) or cmd (Mac) and press restore in iTunes, select the .ipsw file.
- ????
- Profit

Didn't apple release an iTunes version (or was it the new laptops) that didn't allow an iPhone to be put in DFU mode? I don't think the option to downgrade is always a sure thing...

Hmm, dunno, never heard of that. But I'm running iTunes 8.2 and it still works.

edit: okay, I do need to add that I have a 2G iPhone, perhaps things are different for the 3G. ^_^

Sorry I meant that Itunes wouldn't recognize the iPhone in DFU mode. Anyway that was a long time ago and I haven't heard about it recently.

Is there an option for audio/vibrate alerts when your battery level goes below 20%, or 10%, in 3.0?

So you downgraded from 3.0 GM?
Yeah. I have an imported US 2g iphone, and 3.0 deactivated the phone. iTunes won't let me activate (because I'm not in the US, or on AT&T, or whatever), so I'll have to wait for the jailbreak. :(

I'm doing it now.

Got nervous as it disconnects and reconnects a few times before it starts installing.

Progress bar is 1/3rd there. Not looking forward to it syncing everything back on. I'm sure it'll take an age.

The last part is what's keeping me from doing it at the moment since I manually sync my music, podcasts, and videos. I thought you could just do an update instead of a restore though. Shouldn't the update just leave everything intact?

you can do an update, not a restore. just option click on the "check for update" button instead of the restore button when choosing the new fw.

i had mistakenly thought that a restore was needed for this earlier on but it's not.

Well, once it has installed the firmware, it asks you if you want to restore from a backup, or just leave it clean.

I assume you could do it all manually with the latter option.

There's no need to restore your phone when updating to 3.0. Using Update will leave everything intact.

Everything is still working fine after a day on 3.0. Spotlight is awesome.

You're in the Uk right? I've been trying to get an answer for the past day :( but I guess I do need to have the iPhone unlocked to use it there. Is there a way to get a plan with visual voicemail?

While this might be true for the GM (I'm actually surprised) it definitely wasn't true for the 3.0 beta releases. Good to know.

seeing this video make me think that the SPEED upgrade is thx to the OS, the 3GS wont be faster beside the 7.2mb in 3G

Eh.. may want to read below..

3GS appears to be pretty damn powerful...

source: Macrumors.com also anandtech.com

T-Mobile.nl has posted some technical specs about the iPhone 3G S revealing that the newest iPhone carries a 600 MHz processor and 256MB of RAM.

600 MHz is notably faster than the current iPhone and iPod Touch which run at 412 MHz and 532 MHz, respectively. Until now, the 2nd Generation iPod Touch has been the fastest device in the lineup by a good margin. Meanwhile, the previous generation models where also limited to 128 MB of RAM, so the new device offers twice as much which could be a welcome change to developers. The processor/ram information seems to confirm many details that were first revealed in a Chinese forum post.

Apple has been particularly unrevealing about the detailed hardware specs for the new iPhone even to developers at WWDC. The new iPhone is also believed to use the new PowerVR SGX graphics processing unit which provides support for OpenGL ES 2.0. This notably improved performance may require developers to support these multiple device capabilities within their apps.

For those interested in more of a technical analysis, Anandtech offers a detailed breakdown of the new iPhone's processor and GPU, according to their sources. The information lines up with the other reports referenced above.

When you get to the store or get the phone and your number is ported over.. that will automatically flag Verizon and it will terminate your contract. You will have to pay so much for breaking your contract. But since you are on a 2 year contract that expires in August (Renewed your contract backin October 2007 I'm guessing since you can renew every 22 months with VZW) then you will have to pay the prorated fee. I think it stops at like 25 or 50 dollars.. So you will just owe that on your final bill to Verizon on top of whatever service you still need to pay.

Another cool thing about the 3GS... from Macrumors.com

- iPhone 3G S Oleophobic Screen Coating: A number of readers have pointed out that Apple's tech specs page for the new iPhone 3G S mentions that the device's screen includes a "fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating". Fingerprint smudges on the iPhone's screen have been a minor but frequent complaint from users.

Apple's iPhone cleaning instructions also differentiate between the iPhone 3G S and earlier models. While Apple recommends that original iPhone and iPhone 3G screens be cleaned with a "soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth", the iPhone 3G S's oleophobic coating allows users to clean their screen with a dry cloth, simplifying the cleaning process and reducing potential moisture damage.
