This news is a good example of how democracy is neither a synonym of freedom nor an end in itself. It can sometimes be used for more freedom but most of the times it's the instrument of the tyranny of the majority. Allowing child marriage and marital rape are only some of its perverse effects.

I don't think these are "western ideals" I think they're humanist ideals. That being said you appeal to the educated leaders and get it to trickle down. Outside forces don't instigate the real motion of change.

But women and their daughters in that area are afraid to speak this way because of the social practice of "the husband can do whatever he wants with his women, who are inferior by nature". It's not as simple as giving them a voice, it's about changing the way societies as a whole view women.

The reason people in Iraq (and in "The West") used to marry off their young children was to guarantee them financial security in their agrarian societies. That was the best way for families to attain wealth. Of course back then there was no (formal) education, women didn't work as much and their farm labour was not as valuable, so this was essentially the most productive thing you could with a woman. Now it's important to realize, that in this situation, it was economic values that drove Iraqis to marry off their young children.

Fast forward to the 21st century, the practice no longer fits with Iraqi values. Marrying your children off is not the best way to guarantee wealth. In 2014, it is best to educate women, let them get jobs and support their families. Marrying them off stifles this and makes the country poorer in the long run.

So in accordance with Iraqi values (economic), child marriages should obviously be outlawed, and women should be educated and attain high paying jobs. No way under this equation does the West come in. It is in perfect alignment with Iraqi/Arab values to have strong women rights. The problem is that every country has its people who still live in the past, just like Tea Party Republicans or Front National or what have you. The country has to overcome its cultural inertia if it wants to evolve and live in the modern world.

No it wouldn't. When Saddam and his party came to power they brought stability. If we're talking women's rights, they were much better after the 1970's up until economic sanctions started to cripple the country and economy. Iraqi women had it much better before the war, we're able to walk streets without being gang raped en masse, we're able to attend University. Now they're at one of the lowest points ever. It doesn't help that theocratic influence from Iran is now dominating the country.

I have no respect for the Saddam regime, they were brutal, especially to dissidents. There are many human rights abuses done because of him and his party. But all the US and UK have done is replace a dictator, with a soon to be authoritarian regime that will institute religious theocratic beliefs. Basically an Iran Jr. in a sense.
