Had some Tom Kha with noodles for lunch, and my shredded beef is smelling delicious in the crockpot. Soon the shredding will commence, then some sauce, then some more cooking, then some delicious eating.

So I went on a quick 2 week trip around Europe ...
and of course aside from the nice sights and stuff most importantly was trying out some awesome food!

1st: Barcelona, Spain

4563_798122054853_1222371_45608003_2110899_n.jpg

Paella!

4563_798149040773_1222371_45609655_3054182_n.jpg

Potatoes with spicy sauce (that was hardly spicy)
Mussels and Potato Croquettes

2nd: Rome, Italy

4563_798190028633_1222371_45611736_5442890_n.jpg

Gotta have my favorite Carbonara!!

4563_798190038613_1222371_45611738_6128648_n.jpg

Along with some Scalloppini and Potatoes (though it wasn't what I was expecting alas. Scalloppini = Pork? Boo)

4467_798511204993_1222371_45625891_2075344_n.jpg

Yummy continental breakfast?

n1222371_45625956_2938076.jpg

Pizza of course too. Simple cheese and sausage pizza. Yum!

4641_798582826463_1222371_45628631_1202399_n.jpg

Tasty tasty Lasagna....

4641_798583110893_1222371_45628678_7159559_n.jpg

4 cheese Gnocchi! Very tasty.

4641_798583095923_1222371_45628676_7414934_n.jpg

My friend got lasagna at this other place... while it was better than the one i had earlier... it was ridiciulously small. Not worth the tradeoff.... heh.

Food from Greece and Germany a lil' later...

yeah I couldn't finish them :( Had a crazy night last night and didn't eat till 11.30pm. It's 9.30am now and I'm still stuffed, lol

Fuck my life. Just spent two days slowly reducing a goose carcass to stock and then demi glacé, only to forget it for thirty minutes while i showered and have it burn on ultra low heat. So frustrating.

Alright here we go

Location 3: Athens, Greece

n1222371_45644090_3197867.jpg

Veal with some pasta. This was really tasty

n1222371_45644124_1476216.jpg

Chicken Souvlaki that was ridiculously dry with Fries that were so wilty that it was ridiculous.
Worst meal ever.

n1222371_45644513_315011.jpg

Lamb cooked in a pot with white sauce. Now this was amazingly tasty. Good stuff.

n1222371_45644922_92918.jpg

A really awesome gyro. This was huge! And only for 2,20e. Pretty good price:taste ratio here.

n1222371_45644968_1232394.jpg

Well, I ordered this "spicy cheese salad" expecting some greens (because I've definitely been having a lack of veggies in my diet...) but just got this pat o cheese... bummer.

n1222371_45644978_7498605.jpg

And then a nice chocolate mousse dessert later...

Location 4: Berlin, Germany
n1222371_45645358_3160264.jpg

Sausages, Potatoes, and Sauerkraut! This was amazing. First time I actually liked sauerkraut too. Yum.

n1222371_45645359_931213.jpg

And of course my friend got some Shnitzel too. Tasty!

n1222371_45646282_7583853.jpg

a Huge strudel + some kinda berry thing. That's about 1/4 of the whole thing.

n1222371_45646292_1030827.jpg

Some pastries for the morning. An apple thing along with a pineapple thing... apologies for the rough namings haha.

n1222371_45646301_3361386.jpg

Currywurst! Saw this being sold everywhere, had to try one. It was great! Yum.

n1222371_45646358_6717959.jpg

And our last meal... we found a Prussian place (I think)
Roast duck with potato dumplings and a red-sauerkrauty dish with gravy.
So amazing. A great last meal!

>> Goin' Back Home...
n1222371_45646622_1495461.jpg

Of course there's the ever tasty (blagh) airline food...

n1222371_45646624_8148786.jpg

And then back home for dinner time to go to my favorite restaurant (Curry House -- Japanese Curry!) Some Corn Potage

n1222371_45646625_4781117.jpg

And the curry which I was so exicited to eat that I forgot to take a picture until I only had one bite left... heh.

Whew.

scottnak, you were not betrayed with the german foods, it all looks OK. Thanks for sharing.
Funny side note: To my subjective taste, the greek food in germany is way better than in greece itself:lol
Did you have a Döner Kebab while in Berlin? It#s the turkish equivalent to Gyro and gives the currywurst a run for the money as the favorite fast food for nearly 20 years now:

I didn't! It was that or currywurst, and my friend suggested currywurst over Doners.
Though she also said she was sick of eating Doners , dunno if that had anything to do with that decision. Heh.

It did look nice though. :d

I just got back from Vegas and had my share of eating and gambling but little in terms of pictures.

Pizza looks great Beelze. Think I'll try try my hand at homemade pizza dough sometime soon because I recently tried baking bread and it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be.

I've never heard of Goetta, but I must make it now too! How do you do the steel cut oats? Just cook them regularly, and then....mix in the veggies? What should the ratio be? Are the oats just acting as a binder?

Goetta normally has meat in it, so I actually thought you might like this vegetarian version of it. :)

I made the oats like normal (about a 3:1 ratio of water to oats) and left if a bit undercooked so they still have some "toothiness." While that was cooking, I sautéed the minced vegetables: the mushroom and onion first, so they soften and break down, then the shredded carrot, garlic, sugar and cider vinegar. I mixed in the chives and some fresh herbs at the end.

After everything cools a little, I mixed the veggies into the oats, added salt and pepper, and then spread the mixture into a shallow pan lined with plastic wrap (so it's easier to turn out later). Toss it into the fridge for a few hours, then when you're ready to finish it, just flip it onto a cutting board and cut into 2"x4" slices and fry in a little olive oil or butter until it's crisp.

I wasn't using a recipe or anything, so measurements were imprecise, but I started with ¾ cup of dry steel cut oats and roughly 1½ cups of vegetables prior to cooking. I used about a teaspoon of sugar and literally one decent splash of the vinegar, enough to get that "bite" of flavor and most of the liquid cooks away.

Oohhh, yes. I've had risoto balls before, which are amaaazing, but not deep fried! That sounds evil. I would also throw myself onto that brie and eggplant.

The Goetta looks great and those are some awesome looking pizzas.

Below are some ricotta pancakes I made a few days ago.

Tonight's dinner was roast chicken with a sage and onion stuffing smothered in gravy and roasted veges (parsnip, beetroot, kumara and butternut pumpkin). It seems the kitty approves.

You people ever seen split chicken leg quarters? These are the normal leg/thigh "quarter" but somehow split along the length of the bones, so that you end up with a half-depth leg-thigh combination, the bone marrow of each exposed along with the flesh on one side, with the expected skin on the other.

First time I ever see that... and I live in Japan Oo'. I'll guess that's an special recipe for 'Japanese food' to sell in the Western. Because I doubt that's original Japanese food.

Same goes for every other picture except the actual sushi, hahah :p

I'm going to eat out today probably at an Indian restaurant (my gf chooses restaurant though, so maybe not), if I can I'll take some pics :D. Though I would probably eat the typical curry + tandori chicken + nan + rice, but oh well ;D

its not exactly authentic but its good stuff, most of their rolls are westernized creations but that doesn't stop them from being good.

I enjoy a fancy restaurant as much as anyone, but eating a good Döner on your way home after some beers just can't be beaten.

tonight's dinner was a food experiment. can't believe how good it was. the pics on the other hand didn't turn out all that great. but at least there's plenty of money shots (oozing egg yolk).

ok, what you see here is basically a sort of swiss-mexican salad with a homemade yoghurt dressing.

the basic ingredients for the salad are:

lots of tomatoes
beans (kidney, white, green)
corn
fried ground beef substitute (quorn)
swiss appenzeller cheese
chives
two sunny side ups (after frying them i cut the egg white into chunks but left the yolk intact, then i placed it on top and made a cut so it would ooze into the salad... hehe)

swiss yoghurt dressing:

fresh yoghurt
mustard
olive oil
lemon juice
miracle whip
balsamic glaze (crema di balsamico) with figs
chives
salt
pepper

To quote you from the other day, "I don't buy it." ;) The food looks quite delicious!

I'm going to try my hand at soup-making later this week after seeing Hubert Keller on TV yesterday. Seems fairly simple.

Made a nice salad last night, no pictures sorry, was almost midnight when I ate it

toasted pine nuts
sliced chicken thigh, just cooked in some oil
rocket
cherry tomatoes, quartered
half a red onion diced
dressed with some olive oil and lemon juice

tasted pretty magnificent, will have to photograph if I make it at a reasonable hour next time

I love that what we call "arugula," Europe calls "rocket." That's so fun and cute.

i'm a huge jamie oliver fan and this confused the hell out of me for so long in his cookbooks. then i was watching JAMIE AT HOME one day and there was a helpful "rocket = arugula" caption that popped up on the screen, almost as if it were directed squarely at my stupid ass :lol
