is joining a gym worth it?

I've thought about joining a gym but decided I don't need to.. Instead here is what I do;

  • Work out with two 25 lb dumbbells at least 4 times per week. I have multiple things I do with them
Hike and run at least 5 miles at least twice per week on rugged trails and hills
do pushups during the day for a total of at least 200 push ups at least 4 times per week
I eat no junk/fast food and very little restaurant food. I focus on local produce and lean meat
Sit ups, leg lifts, bicycle kicks
I have a bench press at the house that I use at least twice per week

I think doing lots of push ups has seriously increased the look of my arms and shoulders. My girlfriend likes the results. No gym needed.

Just imagine what you COULD be though. Don't settle for less.

this the kind of stuff i would do if i didn't live in inner city new york

i can't find any open places to hike or jog and jogging past so many people makes me feel so awkward

Trust me, almost no one is more awkward than me when I'm out there running. Who cares? I ran down at the ocean this Spring, and there were tons of people out and about. No one laughed, no one sneered. They only saw a guy trying to live a good, healthy lifestyle.

Here's my advice for you.. Go out and have a nice long walk. Then do it again a day or so later. Then, on another day, jog a little during your walk. And again. You might find you like how it feels and you might realize nothing else, no one else matters. Good luck!

I needed a pool to train. The gym was the right solution for me.

In instead if a cable subscription or sitting in a bar, I can watch sports while I run or sit on the stationary bike.

It took me seeing your avatar in this thread to realize how jacked Caius Cosades is lol.

I'm joining a gym soon and getting a personal trainer (as I have no idea what I'm doing)

I'm not overweight but I can see myself slowly snowballing if I don't change my ways.

i would have no problem if i were out by the ocean because i am guessing the route is huge and also linear with no cars

but where i am there are streets to cross, people to dodge and cars to wait for

trust me, i didn't dislike the idea of going to the gym and paying for fitness all for nothing all this time

i really wish there was something along the lines of your ocean trail, the nearest park near me (flushing meadows) with a huge lake to jog around but it's at least two hours away on foot

I hear you.. When I first started a few years ago it was dead of Winter and I bought a (little) used stationary bike and did miles and miles on that while I listened to video game podcasts and music on my iPod. I still use it when weather dictates.

I also had great success with Dance Central 1 & 2 on the Kinect. GREAT cardio! Again, I know I'm awkward as can be, but it's a terrific workout.

I've started a new program to go from scrawny to brawny. Also wake up at 4am to workout before work. Feels good. (sometimes)

I just started going to the gym on June 23, and have managed to consistently go every other day since. I'm really enjoying it, honestly. I decided to follow the Starting Strength routines and have been exclusively working with barbells and doing pullups.

I've been tracking my progress and I must admit that it's quite addictive to be able to keep adding on a bit of weight each session. It's only been a little over a week, but I'm already starting to see some changes in my body composition. Really excited for the future.

So, yeah, I think it's a great idea to join a gym if you need a place to work with weights.

Gym mode isn't just some dumb saying, you're literally in a certain state of mind when at the gym that's harder to maintain at home. All work, no play.

Not quite. The gym really is great for looking at hot chicks in yoga pants.

Horse shit. It might take you a few tries before you find the right gym. Or even matching the gym you like with the right time of day. Don't listen to this

i think im just gonna keep doing what i've been doing

i really just need to find new ways to combat boredom, thread should have been ''how to not be bored all the time''

now people are just gonna talk about fitness thread stuff'

what have i done

I used to use gyms to combat boredom. I would lift a few days of the week with friends, play basketball for cardio. I really loved playing basketball mostly. I could go there with or without people I knew. Then, whether or not people were playing I could still shoot around. Win.

I've found having to pay for the gym membership makes me more likely to go. Too easy to come up with excuses otherwise. That and my gym has a bunch of classes so I do that since otherwise I have no fucking idea what I'm doing.

But I'm just often bored to death at home all the time, I do nothing all day but sit and browse the internet and jerk off.
Damn I wish I had enough free time to just sit around bored to death at home browsing the net and jerking off.
I'm considering joining a gym too, but I don't know how I'll find enough time to go to it more than once a week.

I just finished a 60 day workout program during which time I spent about 45 minutes each morning, five days a week doing high impact aerobic exercises without any weights or accessories. I also changed my diet to watch my calorie intake, and walked more during my commute (roughly 3 miles a day). During that 60 days, I lost 20 pounds and gained quite a bit of muscle.

What was this program? Volt Fitness app on the iPad for $0.99. It worked for me. Because I didn't want to spend an extra hour preparing to go to the gym, traveling there, changing in and out of my gym clothes. I just did it all in my bedroom. Fuck the gym. You don't need it.

It really depends on your goals. If you need to spend time and form a hobby, working out at the gym is a great way to do that provided you educate yourself a little bit on fitness, and set the goals you want for yourself.

If you just want to lose a few pounds, build a little more muscle, or both - and you don't have the time or you just don't want to go to a gym - there's no need. But if you want consistent strength gains, the best possible body you're genetically capable of getting (naturally or otherwise), and maybe a nice place to oogle at chicks, then welcome to the brotherhood! And no, Planet Fitness is not a real gym :p

i went to the bally fitness today

and you know what

fuck that

i have changed my mind about the gym

fuck gyms

i thought i would pay a one time fee for the year but no they wanna keep tabs on my credit card and take money from it once a month, i just don't feel comfortable with that

i just didn't dig the gym environment at all, there is just something so gimmicky about it and i know it shouldn't take a monthly fee in order to stay fit what was i thinking

For me it's not worth it. I could have made the changes I made doing other things and the people there are the worst kind of people. Just last night I saw some roided out guy with a "u mad bro?" tank top.

Take that, P90X and Insanity!

I guess I'm not a fan of that kind of showoff attitude.

Good. Having to join a gym to exercise is the biggest scam of the last 50 years. All you need to do is calisthenics and cardio. Both are completely free. Don't listen to those brainwashed dudebros trying to convince you otherwise.

cardio kills your gainz

Never worked out, went to the gym for the first time a couple of months ago. Had no idea what I was doing. They gave me a schedule. I'm 2m and 106kg. I got the exact same schedule as a friend who's 1.60 and like 65-70kg. Felt weird.

I didnt mind the machines, when you get a nice routine going its fine. Fuck cardio though.

But I quit after a couple of weeks. I really want to get in shape, would do wonders for my self esteem, maybe I should try the gym again, maybe another one. I could start doing daily push and situps to start with.

Someone said I should try running, but I'm 2m and 106kg and really dont want to fuck up my knees.

Absolute garbage post. If you want to build real muscle you'll need to lift weights, and unless you have the space for it in your house you'll need a gym.

If all you want to do is cardio and look like JD from Scrubs with his shirt off, you're right, a gym is a waste of money.

Absolutely.

Best $12.50/month I've ever spent.

I used to work out from home, but given that I lift heavy I can't have my ideal setup at home until I move out of this small ass apartment the gym is the best option for me.

Some day I will have a home gym. Some day...
The hell? Cheapest I've ever seen has been about $22.... several years ago... and only if you paid for a full year membership.

...that said, if I did have my own house I'd probably buy a bench, a squat rack and some weights and never go to the gym again. Gyms aren't a scam, but exercise machines and personal trainers generally are.

I was working out in my apartment for years and I never put on the kind of muscle and increase in strength that I did in four months at the gym.
