Is there any chance that Sony could drop a bombshell...

It would only mean that Sony was scared. Scared to luanch against the Revolution.

It would singlehandedly be the end of GAF. Wall Guy who?

Oh God, the threads that would be created... it would be the funniest thing of all time.

Secretly I'm hoping that Metal Gear Solid 4 is shown and it looks worse than MGS2, so that the forums can create like an Floorguy or something PS3 edition.

I could see them announcing a US launch - or rough timeframe - earlier than most expect, but not 2005.

No matter what, if they miss that first Christmas it's no use rushing forward. Plan it out, get yourself massive media flow and then blast that launch out of the park.

True. This would be the megaton:

PS3 for 2005 X-Mas launch
PS3 for March 2006 Japan launch

God, imagine the threads. I drool thinking about them. DO IT SONY!

I don't know if originally saying that you're going to launch a system in 2006 and the holding a press conference to say "hey guess what, it's coming out this year instead!" would really be a megaton. If PS2 hadn't been selling so well since 2001, the system would probably already be out in Japan right now, or very close to it.

I'd have to say very night likely, but considering the huge gap they got but losing to the DS on the Christmas launch may propel them to rush it out so the same gap doesn't appear between the 360 and PS3. The IGN article did mention someone saying it was an option. And if they wanna avoid launching against Halo 3 (or causing Micro to rush that game, whichn would be wise...)

However, if they wanna launch with games...

What if they have been secretly getting launch games ready for 2005 with Japanese devs? And even after the X360 system was unveiled, EA refers to their next-gen games as, "titles for next-gen systems"...how would 2006 sports titles apply to any next-gen system other than X360. Why don't they come out and say that they're for X360?

Conspiracy I say. PS3 launch in 2005.

Totally tongue in cheek ppl

I think this would be a larger megaton:

Sony shows mindblowing specs for the PS3, displays an awesome design and then.... They play a trailer reel with Ridge Racer 6, FFXIII, MGS4, True Fantasy Live Online, Diablo 3, Ninja Gaiden 2, KotOR 3 and then at the end it goes "AVAILABLE SUMMER 2006" while Kutaragi screams via a translator "Halo 3? BRING IT ON BILL!" and the crowd goes wild. :lol

Assuming they can ready the hardware in time, they could easily have a new RR and DOA4 port for a Nov-Dec launch. The real problem would be the hardware though. The recent scaling back may be a pointer to a rushed launch, but I'll wait for the pre-E3 conference and see what they have to say.

hehe, i already called this and was chastised by so called GAF experts in another thread.. Ps3 to hit the states first, blu-ray and all, christmas 2k5

Yeah, the only way I see this happening is with the rushed cell/chaperone and no blu-ray.

If they could somehow launch it this fall in Japan and a March 06 date for America, I think that would have the potential of really, really hurting MS.

And yes the threads would be awesome. :D

why no blu-ray and rushed cell/chaperone? The ps3 has been in dev longer than the x360 and sony would launch w/ blu-ray regardless of any deal being struck on a unified format. So the only considerations are A) games and B) costs.

People simply assume that sony doesn't have games because unlike MS, they don't put up clown shows like our colony. We will know in a few days (make that hours) just how many games sony has. Cost IS an issue, but then sony could launch the system for say 400 dollars for the christmas season and even @ that pricepoint (100 or so more expensive than the competition), the playstation brand will dominate the cheaper x360.

The only way I can see this happening is a Japanese launch for Xmas 2005 with like 3-6 games (how hard can it be to port a couple of Mahjong games to PS3?) with a US launch happening in 2006.

I don't think the US gaming public would stand for a limited launch, but a general lack of games doesn't seem to have hurt Japanese launches in the past, as long as a couple of the games are very strong system-seller titles.

Then again, we seemed to have bought the DS without any games, so who really knows? :)

That is, of course, why Microsoft is launching early - pphear of the Nintendo Revolution.

this is true. i know for a fact that Ridge Racer has been well into development since July. i'd say it's safe to bet that that's not the only game that's been in development for that long.

You know, I pride myself in not taking allegiance with MS, Nintendo or Sony, but I agree with this statement. The PS name, the hype about being much more powerful than the 360 and the BluRay would make it a huge success if it launched this year.

:D

oh btw, sorry dude, MS beat em to it (pulling a saturn that is). ;p

Except that if it launches this year it is exceedingly unlikely to be more powerful, it will not have Blue Ray or anything of the sort, and the software would consist of a couple of 989 sports games strung together by bailing wire.

if Sony actually bust out an 05 date, or just has a show that leaves everyone like that one guy in the first F-Zero commercial, MS will definitely bust out that Halo 3 teaser they have. chances are they'll show it off anyways. they'll need all the ammo they can use.

is anyone still excited for Halo after Halo 2? Not a fan but it sounds like the sequel really dented the franchise's allure.

Well, regarding SONY... I really don't see it happening. They're tracking PSP, PStwo and both consoles are doing VERY well, with their AAA partnerships, they won't need to launch early against MS.

Because I like making predictions:

I think that the whole "half letters" banners are hinting at the new controllers that can split in two.

Halo 3 teaser? Are you kidding. Fuck man, BEST E3 EVER. No matter what camp you're in, you just can't lose :D

This is the long, final breath before we take the plunge. It's funny, being a geek that loves games... these last few hours before the first press conference almost seem surreal. I guess that's a good indication I need to calm down and not take this shit so seriously, but I can't help but get overwhelmed with excitement.

All is Quiet on the Western Front, ya know? And then...
