I've changed - PSOne visuals hold up better than N64 ones

I had a lot of down time last night and a PlayStation, so I decided to play some titles.
I have to say after extensive time with Tekken 3, Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Legecy of Kain, and even the crappy SpiderMan 2... The PSOne visuals really do hold up a lot better today than the N64 visuals.

Everything is so crisp and sharp and in the titles without texture warping, everything looks great. None of the games apart from Tekken 3 were very entertaining, but I think had Nintendo developed for the PSOne we would have seen some truly amazing titles. I think Ocarina of Time would have benefited from more polys and a sharper look. Mario 64 DS already looks much better to me because of how much sharper it is.

Am I the only one who thinks this? Even in recent PSX v N64 threads, I see those who say the N64 had the best visuals of the time. I held that view until last night.

Replace whatshisface with Link and add some room detail and you have a sexy Zelda title... at least for back then.

Its all about the texturing.... Soul Reaver was one of the better looking PSone games cause of its texturing. The DC made it even better. Show me another game with that good of texturing and i might believe you Oli. But as of right now N64 still had better lighting and better geometry for the time.

I don't have a link handy, but awhile back a poster familiar with N64 on B3D mentioned a way of programming the N64 to pump out polys similarily to the PSone. So I'm not sure about the comment about Nintendo developing for the PSone--they decided not to go that route when it was actually possible (unfortunately, they did allow 3rd parties to go that way either.)

I don't know if I agree. I mean, I want to agree in theory... but then I just think to Zelda, Mario 64 and Waverace and how I remember they wowed me and that most PSX games didn't really wow me... so...

Nah man..N64 had the edge, games like Mario64,ZeldaOOT,WaveRave did things that the ps1 just couldnt do. In terms of beauty..N64 had the edge with texture filtering,etc..yes alot of games on N64 did look blurry as hell but overall games on N64 just looked better because of a few things.

PS1 did hold its own against a more powerful system. Games like Einhander(sp),Ridge Racer,Tekken, etc do showcase some nice crisp visuals though..

I'm going to hook up my N64 and PS to the TV in the family room. It's not as good as the one in my room, so I think it will help hide the ugliness. I hooked up the Saturn to my HDTV and it damn near cut my eyes, that shit was so awful looking.

If only the jumpy framerate and utterly fuxx0rd camera controls didn't leave the game all-but-unplayable on the DC.

I really wanted to like the game :(

Tekken 3 looked great when I played it. Nice framerate, nice models and animation, projected shadows, and lovely background. I don't understand how it could be near unplayable now.

PSX looks like this gen jaggified to me.
N64 looks like last gen.

No, except for perhaps the water in Waverace and games like Zelda and Conker, there really wasn't anything that stood out that much in the N64 library IMO. The system certainly had a few impressive games, but the majority of its titles looked like overly-blurry, muddy CRAP. There's something wrong when the majority of the games released for both platforms were better on the 32-bit Playstation than the 64-bit Nintendo 64. :P

And the PSX certainly had its share of eye candy as well. Vagrant Story, Gran Turismo, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tobal 2, etc.

You folks are crazy.

I can't go back to that pixelated mess of PSX games. Sure, PSX had the better games by far, but God, they were soo shitty looking even back then. Nintendo 64's texture filtering and Z-buffering alone ensured that Nintendo 64 games would age better.

Gameplay. I play T5 like every other day. Going back to T3 is hard.

I'll take pixelated, but a sharper/crisper picture over games that look like vaseline was rubbed all over the screen. Many N64 games have shitty frame rates, too, and let's face it: Most 3D games on BOTH systems aged poorly anyway.

This says it all to me.
I'm sure had EAD developed on the PSOne their games would have looked better and I'm sure Mario PSOne would look like the right screen.

I can't wait to see a 3D Zelda on the DS.

I have never cared for pixelation on games...what bothers me the most is the lack of sharpness so then it was a natural reaction to prefer PSX titles. Besides add terrible framerates and horrible resolution on the N64 side...which was a pity.

The Crash Bandicoot games still look terrific even by todays standards, but pretty much every other 3D Playstation game is literally painful to look at. With all the polygonal and texture errors plaguing most 3D PSX games, I have trouble understanding how anyone can think PSX games hold up better than N64 games. I've been replaying Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie recently and they really are pleasent to look at, which you cant really say about 3D PSX games.

Of course, they've both aged poorly (although I have to say that, in Wave Race 64, the polygons of the water aren't blatantly obvious like they were in most games of that era).

But honestly, the vaseline-screen didn't bother me nearly as much as the jittery messes in PSX games. I tried to play Metal Gear Solid recently...it's a total joke compared to something like Ocarina of Time. I can't believe I EVER tolerated Metal Gear Solid.

Yeah, Kitchen, which is why whenever I play this game, it's always without the graphics filter.

That really makes me want to play that game again. Well, here is hoping that i have enough time over winter break to do so.

It depends on what game it is.

Jetforce Gemini looks like one of the best looking game from that generaion in my opinion. he texture and lighting was jaw dropping,as was the games soundtack.

The first Spyro game for the PSX was also amazing,I dunno if it was high res. or what but the game looked awesome for its time. Nightmare Creatures was a hotty for its time. Ghost in the Shell was another Diamond looking game as well.

Turok 2 was an awesome looking game for the N64(though maybe it cheated a little since it did have a memory cart to enhance its look)

I also thought N64's World Driver was pretty damn slick looking for its time..

It always went back and forth in my opinion though. Sega with the Saturn had NIGHTS,Sega Rally,VF2,Astal,ClockWork Night,Panzer Dragoon Dwei,Dead Or Alive, there were games on all systems that looked gorgous, and still do,even though age has degraded them abit.

Vagrant Story. The pictures aren't the best, but this is one of hottest looking games of the previous generation.

I demand even more RR4 pics! :D

RR64 looks bad since it was NST first game. Though if it had the graphic engines of WRC, it would look awesome.

Playstation graphics suck. Playstation Graphics = texture warping and pixelation galore.

Just for reference Conker, Banjo Tooie, Mario 64, Perfect Dark, Rogue Squadron, Rayman 2, Wave Race have no comparable game in terms of graphics on the PS.

I think Ocarina of Time would have benefited from more polys and a sharper look.

Have you seen a PS gamewith as large a draw distance and no pop up? Visit Hyrule field for reference.

Unlike the N64, the PS doesnt have perspective corrective, so yes warping was a problem in early Playstation games.

The N64 could do 600,000/sec playstaion quality polygons using the Turbo code. But Nintendo wouldnt let you release a game using this library.

I couldn't possibly disagree more. PSOne games are a jaggy mess of rough edges and crappy textures. N64 games, while fairly blurry, are at least smooth. I honestly can't even play any PSOne games aside from C:SOTN anymore.

n64 games were always ugly unless they adopted a very simple, bold style. like mario 64 or ocarina of time. any attempt at intricate texturing or subtle color would just turn to soup. low poly counts too. better psx games, and even the few best saturn games, are much more attractive.

Vagrant Story looked good for PSX, but the draw distance wasn't very far.

Now that you mention SS I am still amazed at this one:

compared to playstation.

development talent is a factor too. the only talented developers working on the n64 were nintendo and rare. and obviously neither of them have the visual style of a konami or square. something similar is happening with gamecube...though it's clearly more powerful than ps2, developers aren't pushing it as hard, and its games aren't as stylish.

Unless you are thinking of the 2d stuff then you're fucking nuts. Most of the 3d on the PSone wasn't even 3d enough to have 3d gameplay. Just open up a cup of Spyro. You can see like 2 inches infront of you and the rest is darkness. Conker, Star Wars Ep 1 Pod Racer, Mario, Turok 2, Banjo Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini, Rayman...

I mean seriously.
To me its N64 = Big 3d worlds with textures that don't hold up today.
PSOne = Small 3d rooms with textures that don't hold up today

But even then, stuff like Kazooie and Conker is much easier on the eyes than some current gen games.

You didnt know?

Neither did anybody else on the planet. :P The N64 can push a maximum of 150k polys. That's it. There's no secret turbo mode. You can plainly see the difference in polygon pushing power between the PSX and the N64, anyway.

God Bless those Burning Rangers shots but I think they're missing the texture warping and clipping that also accompanied them.

Great looking game though,when you weren't moving,heh.
Sonic team pushed the Saturn beyond the call of duty with this game.
