James Cameron godfathers new Terminator film, Tim Miller to direct

I'm glad to finally see that a new Terminator movie is in the works. So much potential for more, but they stopped after only two movies. Strange.

Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day are two of my favorite movies of all time.

I've always thought the third film should've always been a Saving Private Ryan- type future war film that followed one unit and made the Terminator a legitimate horror threat again. It should've ended with Reese going back to '84.

The first film was about Reese and Sarah. Second film about Sarah and John. Third film should've been about John and Reese. Perfect family trilogy capper.

I think less of a focus on the Terminator units (until near the end) and more of a focus on the Skynet units like the HK line would be better. It's also harder to portray them as a threat as in the future the plasma rifles exist and could kill the Terminator units. They're less indestructible in the future war.

I think I'd like to see the series return to less comic, darker roots. Give me back the unsettling allegories of human self-extinction that informed the first and second films. Nuclear holocaust and the actual holocaust informed the first two films.

Just get rid of the forced, self-referential levity.

That totally needs to go, no doubt. It needs to be a full on horror movie like the first two were, especially the first.

Salvation was such a complete goddamn whiff.

Jesusfuckingchrist how is this franchise not DEAD yet. Why is Cameron even wasting his time.
$$$

Why does Spielberg 'waste his time' with Transformers films?

Hint: he doesn't. But like Cameron is almost certainly doing here, he'll happily lend his name to shit for that bankroll.

I imagine Cameron will be overseeing this to some extent. To which extent? Who knows.

As for Alita, oh yea he's totally farming that one out.

Alita will actually have a fuck-tonne more of Cameron's influence than this Terminator thing.

People forget that Cameron was involved in writing the script for Alita and did a year of pre-production on the film. They've got entire Malibu offices filled with the concept artwork that Cameron worked with a bunch of artists (like Ryan Church) on. He even did pre-vis tests for Alita before moving ahead with the original Avatar.

I'm still much more interested in the Alita film coming, despite Rodriguez.

Make this the movie about Henriksen Terminator.

Why give Schwarzenegger a victory lap?

Give it to LANCE.
This will only work if he has the foil teeth. It's essential.

Alita was pretty close to filming before Avatar went into full production, wasn't it?

Great. That means we can expect it in 2028.

Where the fuck is Avatar 2? Is there a bigger slacker than James Cameron in hollywood?

I'd argue that there's no director in Hollywood that works harder than Cameron.

Just because he isn't content to shit out another movie to make a date like every other blockbuster director, doesn't mean he hasn't been working hard. Dude is notorious for making sure a film is actually fully prepped and is a perfectionist. People are surprised that he's taking a long time to prep a simultaneous four-film shoot? It's like people want another Hobbit trilogy.

Considering how Genisys absolutely soiled the bed with the film canon on top of being a mostly mediocre film, I have no qualms with making the film a full-on continuity reboot. If Cameron is actually involved in production maybe it can turn out good, and getting Tim Miller is a plus.

Hopefully this film is a full-on return to being a film for mature audiences like the first three films, and not being PG-13 watered down affairs like Salvation and Genisys were. Genisys was especially bad it this, throwing cornball humor that felt nothing like the past Terminator films at all.

On a more opinionated note, I hope the story isn't yet another standard canon welding attempt of the Connor storyline. It would be interesting to see the film revolve around a different cast of characters. One idea I recently though could make for an interesting Terminator installment would be a The Thing-type film featuring a T-1000 and a closed-off group of cast members.

That totally needs to go, no doubt. It needs to be a full on horror movie like the first two were, especially the first.

Salvation was such a complete goddamn whiff.

Judgement Day was more of an action film than a full-on horror film like the first (kinda like how Aliens differs from Alien), but yeah, I agree.

Genisys was one of the few 0/10 movies I've seen in my life

Yeah it just lacked any emotion at all for me. I felt empty.

T2 is my favorite movie and I have an original poster for it.

So when i feel empty watching a terminator movie that's saying something.

You're deluding yourself if you think Avatar 3 and 4 are going to come out in a nice yearly schedule. And that's assuming he wont get carried away with passion projects like deep sea marine documentary bullshit.

Where did I mention that they're going to come out in a yearly schedule? I said he was shooting four films simultaneously. Which he is.

I bet the plot is how Jon Connor sends Kyle Reese back to the past to start T1. That way we get the big future war setting like we've seen in T1 and T2 and it makes T1, T2 and this one canon.

I hope James Cameron is actually invested in this.

The problem with the Terminator franchise is that they have been chasing after the success of Terminator 2 trying to duplicate it. Each movie gets bigger in scope but feels less like a Terminator movie. I would like to see it go back to a smaller more self contained scope. I think a more simplistic plot works better for this type of movie. Not Doctor Who type time travel.

Only on GAF would you find somebody calling James Cameron of all people, lazy.

Dude has pioneered the most difficult film shoots in history, but is lazy af because his four-film simultaneous shoot hasn't come out with the same speed of the just-add-water, Marvel, factory-line milk-churn machine.

I seriously thought this was a joke thread about those knock-off DVDs they trick grandmas into buying for birthday presents.

For me time travel is fine it just needs to be told in a way that's not, like, shitty. Genisys' story didn't even bother me but the movie was shite. Saw it coming from a mile away based on the previews, but I actually liked the Terminator vs Terminator and Jon Connor being Terminator'ized concepts. If it was even a half-serious movie with a different cast, perhaps it would have been good.

I'm going to choose to get hyped here though. Cameron can't fuck this up, can he?

Ushojax

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Give me that future war film that ends with Kyle and Arnold being sent back. Ignore everything post T2.

I feel like there's only one announcement that can come for this to make me semi-interested since we know that Cameron isn't directing.

And that would be getting Brad Fiedel out of his surfboard shop to come and compose this fucking thing again. T3 - T5 have all had godawful scores.
