I didn't take drakes problem being a collector of art, or even mentioning it in a song. The problem is "Warhol, Warhol, warhol!", "Basquiat, Basquiat, Basquiat!" That repetitious name dropping is mad corny.
Those were some weak shots at Drake.
Also Drake was right Jigga has become one of the corniest rappers ever there isn't a trend Jay Z won't dick ride and try to take some credit for. "Oh look everyone I'm into art now not like you lowly Negroes ,look at me I'm a rich black man buying expensive art over here.
What an amazing concept. Did I tell you about my Basquiat pictures?"
Why the hell are we arguing about Jay Z?
Sorry Mrs. Drizzy cause so much art I talk/
Silly me rapping bout shit I really bought/
While these rappers rap about guns they aint shot/
and a bunch of other shit that they aint got

Drake makes better music that Jay right now. Kills every feature, makes great albums.
Can't wait for the new Summer Jam screen

Are we really celebrating a Jay Z verse that is only kind of true, and in itself not that complicated?

Jay z likes art for investment and superficial reasons (status). But lets be honest, he's not interested in art or its history.
So does I assume a lot of his friends nothing wrong with it. The only difference is jay can inflate the price through his songs something his friends can't.Jay z likes art for investment and superficial reasons (status). But lets be honest, he's not interested in art or its history.
it's more of trying to bite/ live vicariously through Kanye's "persona"
Gafhop has terrible taste. I wish ken masters would make a separate hip hop thread for everyone who doesn't frequent gafhopPretty sure GAFHOP disliked the album as well.

This hostility is really bizarre and childish. Dude doesn't owe you shit and can release music at whatever pace he wants.Fuck Jay elec. Don't pay attention to that lazy slob.
Then we never woulda got American gangster or watch the throneOn the topic of Jay-Z's legacy, his legacy is being good at picking good beats/producers. Like was said earlier, he should have stayed retired after The Black Album.

I liked Kingdom come, fuck yall
My man. Couldn't agree more. He's good because most of the tracks drown out his voice and the music is loud enough to cover over him.
This is pretty spot on. I took a couple tracks off and into the giant rap playlist and they've lived there since. The lows are just so low that people can't look past themKC was an album that could have been a lot better than it was basically. Jay was trying to do a grown man rap album (stuff like Lost One, Beach Chari) and attempting a little social commentary with stuff like Minority Report but his execution was off/rusty. Lowkey, that album is why he doesn't try and branch out lyrically in terms of subject matter, because he sees it as a failure, and it definitely was. After ~track 5 it dips off into some terrible shit.
It's a dope verse. It's not some shibbity riggiggity liggity shit, but Jay rarely chooses to rap like that. It's worth celebrating because it's funny to see Aubrey get clowned a little by one of his idols and flows nicely in concept from Jay talking about how his hustle is real, to overcoming slavery and the 5% godbody shit.
nah he truly was a godly mc for quite some time even though all his albums except RD and then BP and BA were very inconsistent (that's why I always thought it's hilarious that he of all people called out Nas for a shitty discography when IWW is probably better than everything Jay has released at that time except RD and maybe BP)
Actually quite a bit, if he's willing to risk the potential consequences. Of the three king rap moguls he's the only one really still making music. He can talk about black ownership/entrepreneurship like nobody else really can. He can talk about 5% godbody pride shit like he intimated on this, Devil Is a Lie, Oceans, and Heaven. He can become the first commercial artist in rap to openly embrace his (quite clear) agnosticism/atheism. The last one is really the most crazy buzzworthy thing he could do.Yea its actually a pretty good Jay verse, now that I've listened to it a few times. The Islam reference is very nice. And I honestly don't think alot of us hip hop heads "hate" on him, its just we're tired of the corniness coming from someone who was so great. And be honest, he didnt say much on WtT and MCHG. But, at his point in life, what else should he /does he have to say?

Or maybe it's because Jay isn't a good lyricist with respect to introspection or story telling. I know you're Jay's official PR spokesman but let's be real for a second. KC has some interesting concepts, I like Beach Chair a lot in fact, but overall its failure has nothing to do with Jay being "rusty." Someone of that caliber doesn't fall off after a few months, and we already know he was doing lowkey (unreleased) verses during his retirement anyway. The album fails because Jay can't move beyond brag rap and hustler shit.
He's really witty, has a great flow etc...but lyrically he hasn't really gone HAM since Reasonable Doubt. He's been on cruise control for decades, but even on cruise control he was miles ahead of a lot of dudes. But once you analyze his shit you really recognize he's someone who doesn't have much to say.
This hostility is really bizarre and childish. Dude doesn't owe you shit and can release music at whatever pace he wants.

I don't disagree with you on Jay's social commentary etc. He's never been good at it, or extensively rapping about things not related to himself. I think Jay has told pretty good stories from time to time though; Regrets, Lucifer, Friend or Foe, December 4th, You Must Love Me, etc etc. He's not the best at it at he doesn't do it much, but he can clearly do it.
Regarding rustiness... A couple of verses does not compare to his creative workrate before that. Dude released an album a year from 1996-2003 on top of features, crossover work etc. Going from full time rapping whenever there's a mic in front of you to some in and out work is not comparable.
But he doesn't sound rusty at all on KC. If anything he sounds out of touch with the production, a trend that he's had since "retiring."
Plenty of 'artists' stay rapping about jewels they borrowed, cars they leased, hardships they never endured, and guns they have never shot in videos filmed in front of houses they don't fucking own.
4 tracks in, I was about to declare Kingdom Come as a classic. Then we never woulda got American gangster or watch the throne
I liked Kingdom come, fuck yall
I really enjoy reading Hip Hop threads in the OT.
Go listen to watch the throne. And if you want a more recent proof; The Devil Is A Lie.
