If Microsoft were smart, they would shadow drop the game today - the Friday before a holiday weekend, instead of waiting until next week when it will interfere with another Day One Gamepass release.
If MS were smart this wouldn't be a shadow drop at all. A guarenteed 10m seller minimum.

I want this to be fantastic because I love Oblivion, but the fact it hasn't even been announced officially is crazy to me. And sure, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black happened and a few years ago HFR, but those did have a stream that was announced where these games were revealed. We'll see.

Well it wouldnt be shadowdrop if it was announced days or weeks before release

further leaks denied

people talking about no marketing... a bunch of youtubers have been making pretty much daily videos about the remake the past 2 months, getting hundreds of thousands views, add the controlled leaks and... ALL THIS IS the marketing

Morrowind and Skyrim next, Todd please

A controlled leak can have everyone talking about it without them needing to spend a dime on press events, previews etc.

For the last almost a month or so, just using GAF as a sample, there have been dozen(s) of threads about this, hundreds and thousands of posts discussing it. All notable gaming websites, your Eurogamers, Gamespots, IGN's etc are all posting articles about it.

It's essentially running a full marketing cycle without running one, if that makes sense.

It really doesnt need an extended marketing campaign
Among enthusiasts perhaps. That's a tiny bubble. The mainstream market needs to be informed that it's coming and what it is and why they should care and how it's improved over the original. No marketing campaign here is not a good idea. Shadow drops only work as a "One more thing…" stunt at the end of an event and for stuff big enough to make a splash on the internet for both enthusiasts and mainstream. And if there is a leak it won't work at all. "Meh, already seen that" won't end with a splash.

But these things can work just fine post-launch, in fact in some cases probably better. Once it's revealed / released, the regular Xbox marketing blitz, full page takeovers, ads on the Xbox home screen, etc. can begin. "Play it now on Game Pass" usually draws a lot more attention than "Coming this July".

That works if it's already a thing people talk about, outside the enthusiast bubble. Like when Fallout blew up after the TV Show, at that point even small ads can pull people in.
But I'm not sure Oblivion Remake can get people talking like that from a shadow drop a random monday without a gaming event already getting mainstream tuned in for gaming news.

Are people really not gonna buy it because they weren't given a trailer 6 months in advance?

This is a big viral booster for Game Pass, at least that's what I think the intention is. Phil wants to pump those numbers.

Personally I will be buying it on Steam. It sucks when your subscription runs out and you can't play something anymore.

Game is going to be huge and sell a massive amount no matter what. Even at the latest, they'll just do a launch trailer on the launch date and everyone would see it and get it asap once the end of the trailer lets them know it's out now.

The Elder Scrolls is the best single player fantasy franchise easily and Skyrim has also made it the biggest and most sold fantasy franchise and one of the top 10 biggest franchise of all times. Elder Scrolls is a completely different beast compared to even other extremely big franchises since it has one of the biggest leg and longevity due to it's massive and amazing deep lore plus modding.

So it's not only going to sell a insane amount but also have extremely good leg and longevity. It won't be as highly sold as a Elder Scrolls VI of course but should still sell a insane amount due to how popular Skyrim made the franchise.

Would love a weekend drop

Wont happen

If it comes Monday, without hesitation will buy this... again... on Steam

Hopefully there is an upgrade price for original owners.

Morrowind definitely! The best Elder Scroll game still but too soon for Skyrim. Oblivion makes a lot more sense cause no matter how much someone mods Oblivion, it won't look as good as Oblivion's Remake or Skybivion so a remake of Oblivion makes a lot more sense compared to Skyrim. But Skyrim still holds up with it's Special Edition and looks extremely amazing with meshes and texture mods.

What about Skywind? That will probably come out sometimes next year.

I'm even more hyped for Skywind than Skybivion and Oblivion remake but I doubt it's coming out next year cause they got no announcement on release dates. Skybivion gave the 2025 release date news a year ago so we know it was somewat close to having a lot of things done. It's going to take a lot more work finishing Skywind than Oblivion just everything is more compact and with more unique things. I don't even know if Skybivion would even come out on their planned release date of this year cause I think it's either late 2025 or 2026 for Skyobivion but it'll probably be 2027 for Skywind.

i wonder if its day one ps5 or it will drop in 8-11 months or whatever they come up with
Can't see any reason to have timed exclusivity on Xbox now that the porting strategy is blasting full speed ahead. They want the whole gaming community to be aboard. Should have a Switch 2 version as well.

Don't know Virtuous skills on PC but hopefully they don't mess up. Steam version needs to be spot on, I want modding possibilities on Bethesda RPGs. No expectations though since it's UE5. Avowed is the only UE5 game I've played that has felt stable.

I think modding is going to be pretty complicated, the game is running two engines stacked on top of each other.

Marketing or not, it's all I can think about this past week.. I really hope it is, in fact, Monday. But we'll see.

I agree that word gets out and the marketing is doing itself and that will absolutely magnify when and if it's suddenly available.

I guarantee you that a remaster of a game from one of the most beloved and biggest ip in gaming doesn't need extensive marketing. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it does better CCU than Skyrim (90K all time peak).

Doing a shadow drop on something like this just makes zero sense from a marketing perspective

But then again this is MS we're talking about, doing things that make zero sense is their specialty

Marketing is a waste of money.
If hl3 released this minute, it would sell millions.
Small games need marketing. Not AAA

Take a look around. This remaster has better marketing than they could've ever bought BECAUSE it's being shadow dropped.

Its not being developed by Bethesda, they have nothing to do with this game
They most certainly have a lot to do with this game since the core is still the same. If it wasn't perfect because it's Bethesda, then the same still applies.

For me that's a good thing. I like Bethedsa's work, jank and quirks are just part of the package for me. I hope it stays true to what Oblivion is - but as many have said, we always have Skyblivion if it doesn't. But I'd much rather this be perfect for my desires, and then hope the rest of the series will receive some good treatment .

Haha try next decade (if ever).
