They're not going after the demo of people that "upgrade" their own pc. Obviously, those people are just going to build their own.

There are millions of young gamers out there who've grown up watching streamers and playing on pc is cool now. Problem is, most of these people have no clue about gpus and cpus and ram and all that. There are plenty of people out there who want the pc experience but just aren't tech savvy. There basically isn't even a major brand name in the prebuilt market.

If they can come up with a console that can run their own damn operating system they could really be onto something. Gaming device that doubles as computer is not the toughest sell to parents.

But this next-gen Xbox isn't supposed to "double as a computer" though.

- Xbox COULD make online free if you are playing your Xbox games through Steam (huge revenue loss, seems like a stretch to me)

This clown has been thinking about this on the internet for about 5 years, it's clearly like I wrote here... it's to raise the morale of the "xbox soldiers"
Microsoft has already tried to DOUBLE the value of Live Gold, but will it end the requirement for it?

The core question that I can't wrap my head around is why an OEM would make Xbox hardware when the entire business is predicated on NOT making money on hardware...and making it back on games/services?

Like why would Asus make an Xbox PC device that goes in your living room, if it's Microsoft or Valve getting all the profit from games? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

ACCESORIES!

The profit margin on all the Asus and Rog Ally accessories that they'll sell with Xbox branded logos will be OUT THE ROOF! And don't be surprised in the initial device itself is sold at a very small profit for Asus too.

Good question. Like if Xbox is, directly or indirectly, giving up on hardware as their most prominent effort to garner an audience, then why are folks like ASUS partnering with them?

It feels like Xbox is trying to do it all again. Just like they did with all the acquisitions. I said it back then...it's too damn much. I thought they should have calmed down after Ninja Theory...but nope. ABK was the coup de grace.

I mean I get it, trillion dollar company, hell bent on becoming an invasive species and has tried (and mostly failed) to do so in whatever is trending at the moment (i.e Zune, Windows phones, Mixer...etc.) More money then they know what to do with.

As a PC Player, absolutely all for what they are trying to do. From a business perspective, given the environment Xbox finds itself in...sure makes sense if they want to survive at all. You stay in the console war, it will get worse for you. If given an alternative, what would Xbox need to do that would be more effective then what they have planned now? I can't think of anything at the moment...so yea, why not the kitchen sink method.

Its so niche it would be staggering how few it would sell but let 3rd party vendors take the risk and maybe just have it on an order basis only (which is 100% speculation)

Its something I said quite awhile ago that while at the round table within Xbox some felt IF they could get this together in time for GTA 6 and it be clearly the best place to play at launch it MIGHT help

Speaking personally if this were to happen I am in line to buy one of these things, if not I will play on the PS5 Pro day one

Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, GOG, and ,shudders, Microsoft Store in a box, plus hypervisor for all the old libraries.

Seems a bit niche yeah and if the price is as epected, will be hard to gain momentum and will probably only sell Steam Deck numbers.

Still it will be intersting to see the annoucement. Will it be another Xbox one reveal with a silent audience at the price?

Modular GPU slot may be good - Choose your experience

I had it, but thought the subscription part was just for certain features and browsing the web. I also thought you could bring your own ISP?

They partnered through AT&T I think, perhaps my family switched to them so I can have dreamcast online? Bill would have been around what other ISP's were at the time anyhow.

Could be misremembering

Yeah, all I had to use was my ISP. I did not pay anything extra to pay Dreamcast games online. I am trying to remember if I had to purchase the web browser or not. I did have the mouse and keyboard for my Dreamcast, and used it to surf the web on my TV in my bedroom.

Yeah did lots of late night surfing lol good times for sure

Anyone else get the sense that the Xbox Series, X in particular is being quietly discontinued? I can barely find stock at any of the major retailers.

Microsoft faces on PC the same hurdles they had on consoles, players have massive digital libraries in their competition and are not willing to split them into two storefronts.
If Microsoft let Sony and Steam into their hardware, all there is left for them is to sell game pass subscription, they can pretty much stop selling games directly.

Because they're selling it marked up to the gills.

The price of these things will not be remotely fun to pay for the average consumer.

The entire business is essentially getting sunsetted and potentially replaced with something that defends Windows against Valve as opposed to a console model that takes on Sony.

Free online? I'd be back in and yes, I do already own a 4090 pc. Sometimes I prefer gaming on with the complexity.

For anyone who has followed their involvement in the Epic vs Apple case and their comments it was obvious that they would go down this path if they continued on the tragectory that they were on at the time (the trajectory was down, and they have, far worse than anyone could have imagined).

This is the only hand they have left to play in this space if they have still any unfounded dreams of "domination".

P.S. I'm definitely not Grubb.
This is exactly what will happen. Just like the BS "cross-play" savior PR when they were getting their shit kicked in, as well as "slimy platform things" when the tables turned as well. They've been playing this snake in the grass long game for some time.

they could just make the Xbox OS available for any hardware manufacturer. And make the ecosystem open like pc.

And they could make some money thru licensing with hardware manufacturers and ad sharing and their own store among other things.

But perhaps most $$$ by having a 0% royalty on all the game development output they've acquired over the past 10-15 years?

I mean if they could make this the console of choice then they open up their software to a larger 0% royalty audience than they've had.

Imagine the EU's willingness at the moment to help a US "big tech" against a Japanese company...

It's another fantasy of "omnipotence" from MS and its Fanboys.
