Filibuster was removed for executive nominees other than the Supreme Court (and I imagine the Supreme Court filibuster isn't surviving the next few months).

Bolton as SoS and Cotton as SoD for maximum war!

Can you imagine if the Dems filibuster the court picks for the next 4 years - Jesus Christ. Endless gridlock. Thank God.

Trump administration sending a clear message with these appointments. Let's see if the MSM decides to call it out. I'm not holding my breath.

It's well past time to wet the bed over this administration. This is all no longer in the abstract.

These picks have been worse than any Trump nightmare scenario fanfic of how this would play out.

Seriously. Expecting egregious civil rights violations being pushed within first three months, another war within six months to a year.

Also quite horrible to realize that a nomination = getting the office, no Republican will oppose a single move that Trump makes. They couldn't find their testicles for the election, they certainly won't find them now.

and say what? I have no idea what to say.

Whatever you want, but you can just follow a basic script. Something like:

"Hi,

My name is [Name] and I'm a constituent of Sen. [Senator Name]. I wanted to leave the Senator a message.

I wanted to let the Senator know that I'm strongly opposed to the nomination of Sen. Sessions as Attorney General. His past, recorded racist remarks and actions towards minorities makes him unfit for the office, and I find it wholly unacceptable. I expect the Senator to address these issues in the hearings and oppose any efforts to confirm his nomination."

It doesn't have to be anything grandiose. Just to the point, your position, and reiterate that you're a constituent and are following the matter. Hold your officials accountable and act.

This is not okay.

I wonder if they're gonna raid Colorado, Cali, and Oregon weed shops. Feds gonna trade shots with state and local cops?

This is why not rescheduling weed was stupid and dangerous. Now federal and state laws are in direct opposition.

Didn't he get denied as a senator for being a super racist or something? Now he holds a powerful position? Jesus America, what have you done?

That wouldn't have happened anyways because democrats aren't babies in suits who throw an 8 year hissy fit every time something doesn't go their way.

I feel like Trump is lying at every instance to not look like a White Supremacist just yet, and that I don't know what's really coming my way. I'm 30, in college and working full time, and I feel like I gotta protest my ass off. I need to go to DC on inauguration day and after and protest too, but I can't because of obligations.

Yup, this is basically what I did. I just called both of my Senators and said:
"Hello. My name is (Real Name) and I'm a constituent of Sen. (Name). I'm calling to let her/him know that I'm strongly opposed to President Elect Donald Trump's nomination of Senator Jeff Sessions to the office of Attorney General. An individual with a history of racist remarks such as Sen. Sessions does not hold the values we hold dear as Americans and has no business in the office of Attorney General. I expect the Senator to stand up for these values by strongly opposing this nomination and refuse any similar nominations the President-Elect might propose. Thank you."

Of course, I'm in Michigan with two Democratic senators, so I'm not sure how much a difference that really makes, but I definitely don't want to say I didn't try, so I called both Sen. Peters' and Sen. Stabenow's local and D.C. offices and got someone on the line at both for each of them and I definitely encourage others to do the same with their Senators.

Yes. They just have to vote on the rules. If they want to get rid of it, they absolutely can and will. It's just a matter of if they want to.

It does not make sense to kill the filibuster. The Republican position of power can and will change sooner or later. By eliminating the filibuster they would only hurt themselves down the road. This is why I disagreed with Reid and the Democrats in 2013 when they decided to trigger the "Nuclear Option". A short sighted moved that now bites us in the ass.

If you voted for Trump you supported white supremacy. He did not hide the fact that he was racist and would give other racists powerful roles if he became president.

Agreed. You cannot be shocked if you voted for Trump. You weighted your vote and you thought white supremacy wasn't a deal breaker.

Shouldn't this at least be partly impossible with things like the constitution in a modern democracy? Since I am not American (thank God) I don't know how strong the defense against an insane government is in the USA.

Not really, they'll just do it and then worry about the constitutionality later. It's what happened with stop and frisk, and it's what will happen with whatever other horrid policies they decide to implement going forward.

The constitution only matters if someone decides to bring up and, in turn, someone decides to listen.

Awesome; props.

I called Feinstein earlier (she promised "scrutiny" and little else), and will be digging up Harris' number shortly (need to see if she has a number set up yet).

Don't worry about the difference it may or may not make -- we're, frankly, gonna lose a lot of battles -- but just keep calling and keep at it. They need to know people are pissed, watching, and holding them to account.

Not going to lie, to me this sounds like the American legal/rights system is a broken mess (and may have always been a broken mess) with to few checks and balances in place to protect it from an insane government with much power. It sounds like it was meant to go horribly wrong eventually.

I'm actually a bit surprised at how brazenly they've embraced big time overt racists. I figured they would pick less obvious supremacists and ease them into power.

I though this car crash was going to play out in slow motion, doesn't seem to be the case.

Washington Post said:
Alabama's Jeff Sessions sure knows how to nurse a grudge. Talking about his family earlier this year, the Republican senator recalled that "Lincoln killed one of them at Antietam."

Trump doesn't have anyone else in his circle. Only racist sycophants for him.

After 8 years of freaking out over Obama and howling about all the signs the country is turning against structural racism and white hegemony, I imagine everyone behind Trump is falling over themselves to seize as much control, as completely, as they possibly can right now.

McConnel's warning about overreach was probably inspired by the attitude he's seen circulating among his peers. It may have been clear Trump's whisperers were going to push for installing as many white power people as they could.

To be fair, I'm sure he actually appointed Hitler in some fanfiction out there.

Jeff Sessions upheld the death penalty for Henry Hays in 97, authored numerous desegregation bills as Alabama AG, authored the Gold Medal bill honoring the Foot Soldiers in the Selma Marches last year, and also authored the bill reducing the penalties for crimes involving crack cocaine while increasing penalties for powder cocaine.

Arlen Specter defended Sessions in 2009 stating that voting against him in 86 was a mistake as he had "since found that Sen. Sessions is egalitarian."

Just throwing that out there.

Thanks!

The thread definitely needed more disgusting spin thrown out there, I'm sure we all appreciate it.

Take note of any Democrats that dont oppose Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III confirmation, some of them are putting forward somewhat tentative statements about this man.

Jeff Sessions said:
an organization that professes to be comprised of homosexuals and/or lesbians may not receive state funding or use state-supported facilities to foster or promote those illegal, *1551 sexually deviate activities defined in the sodomy and sexual misconduct laws.

If they're your Senator, call them (or just call them anyway). It's fine to complain here, but people need to be calling and participating as well.

How could these comically evil characters managed to have a shot at a position of power? God help us all.
