Jessica Chobot: Stepping Into Daylight by Polygon

So if she's not a writer, and her journalism was only mediocre.. what merits does she have for working on this game? I mean, why exactly hire her?

Maybe she has great ideas or sensibilities. No one will know for sure until the game comes out. But that's kind of the point -- people are so quick to dismiss her for something that she did years ago.

so many people still think of her as the "PSP" girl.

i think of her as the IGN employee who was paid by BioWare to be a character in Mass Effect 3 which ultimately got a 9.5 review score

Gears 2 as well, a certain Joshua Ortega.

My point stands either way.

Ah. I just remember Gears 3 b/c I remember how big of a deal they made about getting a "real" writer, and how the story was so much deeper and more human this time around.

Yeah, nope.

Anyways, back on topic. One of my co-workers worked at IGN w/ Chobot and she hates her for being a self-absorbed bitch (some of the stories I've heard about the way things are run there would give any sane HR department nightmares). She always seemed genuine enough to me, if a bit audience pander-y, but I've never hated or resented her success. Good looking person uses their good looks to get ahead. News at 11!

I don't see her getting to write on some video game any different than the other hordes of video game journalist to video game developer jumps.

However, her showing up in ME3 was just so awkward and out of place.

Haven't watched the video b/c Polygon be Polygon. They don't deserve the traffic.

I can't really describe how I feel after watching these Human Angle pieces. I'm not a big Polygon fan either, but I love them for this.

Her story was really inspiring. A lot of years of dedication to the Daily Fix, working in and out of different videogame gigs and now being able to be happily married and writing a videogame sounds so rad. It was hard watching her talk about moving to Japan, trying to gain some semblance of her own personal identity and pursuing dreams she cared about. It's awesome that she has the opportunity to work on "Daylight"- which I had not really followed, but I'm intrigued. I hope it goes more in a "Gone Home" explore an abandoned space/feel tension, rather than combat route- but here's hoping it turns out great.

And that Wonder Woman proposal- dawwwwww. They look so happy together! :)

Hearing Crecente was nice too. I think my anti-Polygon route actually makes me miss him.

Yeah, your reaction is very similar to mine. I was like, "Fuck it, I'm moving to Japan next month" after watching the video about her. Not so that I will end up following a similar life direction as Jessica Chobot or Blair Herter, but if you have dreams in your heart or plans on what you want to do with your life, don't lose them.

Since reading the OP and article or watching the video is either very difficult or too time consuming for some,

1. Zombie dev/friend asked her to write up an outline
2. Friend like it, pitched game and outline to Atlus
3. Atlus picked it up

Please don't encourage people who haven't read the article or watched the video to have an opinion on the matter, because they shouldn't. TL;DR needs to go away. It's hurting our society.

Had no idea she was writing Daylight. The video and article are both sort of fluffy. I'd rather her work speak for itself.

I'm gonna be honest and say that the only reason I'm actually interested in Daylight is cause Chobot is attached to it. I'm really curious as to whether she'll deliver. I couldn't care less how she got into the industry, as it's pretty clear that its something she's quite passionate about

My reason is Anthony Gallegos, I guess we like our former Ign crew.

GAF, do I have this right?

A typical directionless person gets involved in a shitty marriage, has half assed attempts to do something with her life, and then things get murky and she starts playing WoW all of the time, while living in a basement.

She then licks a PSP, gets interviewed by a virgin at E3 saying she is the holy grail of women, and has a career launched because she's attractive.

She continued to work at IGN, clearly not as a result of writing or even hosting abilities, but because she was halfway attractive and knowledgeable about games. But, she's also likable and might have some decent ideas in her head to work at game studios due to connections she's made during her stay at IGN. Good on her for that.

Then this piece gets created to write a sob story to rack up sales of the game she is working on, and people have the gall to be offended at people calling her out? What the fuck.

She exploits her sex appeal to get into the games industry. They then exploit the guilt and ill placed morals of white knighters to drum up game sales. GAF people calling her out isn't offensive, this article is.

*edit for grammar*

The wacky world of public relations.

Would any of that matter if the game and its writing turned out good?

With a name that has such controversy in the industry, would it be wise to gamble someone not buying their game because of a seemingly unqualified person doing it?
If you can get games "journalists" to write fluff pieces like this, sure.
Would any of that matter if the game and its writing turned out good?
Not at all, but that's hardly the point of this thread. Nor is it really the point of the article that was written.

Talking about whether or not the game and writing is good is called a review.

She seems okay. The video was a good watch. I've never had a strong opinion about her. Still don't. Sure seems cook though.

she was the worst ME2 character

The real question is why anyone cares - is it because she looks like a girl that wouldn't talk to you in high school? It's obvious she loves games - like everyone else here - and for mine that's enough to just leave her be. She doesn't seem to be a mean spirited person, either, like most people in this thread..

If she looked different or was a guy, I'm sure no one would be questioning it/caring at all.

My reason is, former Condemned developers are working on this.

That was really well done. Hopefully her game doesn't suck because they're putting her right out front for it.

I don't think it's that simple. We've seen a bunch of game journalists get into the industry without much fanfare but they often have a history of published reviews or articles to draw insight from.

So many vile responses, based on little more than gut feelings. Are people unironically slamming her for doing a tongue-in
or out of
cheek callback Vita lick she was goaded into by the people in the background. It's a three second silly gesture she herself eyerolls at. I have no idea about the quality of her writing, but the same can be said about almost any low profile writer that is writing the media I consume.

Let's be real, what makes 99% of the writers in this industry think they can write a game? Even when pros are being used from other industries they often find out it's a lot different with games.

Yeah, but at least those writers usually have a background in writing. The fact that she has no background is highly dubious and that's putting it lightly.

They got introduced by a mutual acquittance, that acquittance being her own husband. She sent a concept and they accepted it. This is not a big studio, using connections is normal.

She's always came across as a pretty down-to-earth gamer that knew what she was doing.

I can also say that she owned her image, like even when they shoe-horned her into ME3 and they altered her to become this sexed-up version of herself, she still came off as confident and interested in the material she had. Sure the character wasn't that much, but she made it work a lot better than it would have in the hands of someone like iJustine.

I don't care who her husband is or how he knows people. If I'm the head over a studio I'm going to hire someone that is experienced. Not a big studio, but obviously not a smart one either.

Oh please...you know how much great art was written by people that stumbled into it? Give her a chance atleast.

That's really cynical and cruel, I'm sure she put in the work to be a successful personality.

Watched a bit of the video, it was boring.

I wish her the best of luck, though. I don't care how or why she got the job and I'll judge the end product based on its merits alone. I also could not care less about the PSP stuff or the ME3 stuff.

I'm not a fan of Chobot or how she got famous and leapfrogged through thr videogame industry, cuz of her looks and "assets" more than her knowledgeable talent. I even had a friend that worked at EA and he told me how some female EA employees and gamers were offended of how Chobot got a break in the industry cuz of the PSP lick. I recall that she even was a boothgirl babe for some Gaming Companies, before she caught her big break. She obviously is milking her "sex" appeal to the max to keep moving up the gaming corporate ladder.
