Jessica Chobot: Stepping Into Daylight by Polygon

I hope I live long enough to have a video game character created in my likeness, and then have some sort of porno imagery made from it. Truly surreal.

Oh and its full throttle man, looks just like her. Shit is funny as hell. She even fucks golden halo omni gel dildo. Rock on Jessica.

Did you read the article? It's mostly about how she got into the industry, and explains that she sent that photo of her licking a PSP to websites in the hope of getting attention, which worked, and lead to where she is today.

That's probably why people are talking about it.

And that's supposed to make it bad somehow? She's hot and she used her sex appeal to get a position in the industry, where's the fucking issue again? Who is she hurting, no one? Well than who fuckin cares. If the game comes out and turns out to be horribly written than of course fairly criticize it, but to have this hate and outcry as if it actually means or amounts to anything about the quality of her as a writer is absolutely ridiculous.

You don't even have to go that far to explain it.
I'm sure you've seen people here describe how sexy a piece of gaming merchandise was. (lots of comments about that PS4 blue LED gif lately) Or seen that reviewer dance around with his copy of Skyrim.
The PSP-licking was the same thing.

That was a real great piece on Jessica Chobot. Seriously, she's really a cool person. I met her twice at San Diego Comic Con. She's really passionate about gaming. No bullshit. I hope Daylight is successful.

You sound mad = And it'll be bad, don't worry.

I remember hearing about this game, Idk if it is being developed on UE4, that's what stuck to me. But I have been interested since first hearing from it. Chobot writing this game was the most random thing yet. I like her, she seems legit. Not that I judge her or downplay her for any reason. I am far from sexist and I don't freaking care who writes a game that I am interested in, if I like it, fuking kudos to you. :)

You asked why it was being discussed at all, I pointed to the article. I have no interest in your white knight fight. Calm down.

I use to be a fan of Chobot when she first came out and it wasn't simply because of her looks. Yes, her looks was the first thing that caught my attention but I'm not the type of guy that stays a fan simply because someone is attractive (face it, the world is filled with beautiful people). I thought she did have a unique point of view and her demeanor was cool. I didn't view her in the same light as Olivia Munn, a woman who was attractive but came across as someone who clearly didn't care about games but needed a catalysis to get into acting (which ended up happening for her). I do understand that Chobot got her first glimpse of internet fame from the infamous PSP lick but if that was all there was to her then she wouldn't had lasted as long as she did on IGN or G4.

It's appalling that some people view her in a similar light as a Kim Kardashian of the video gaming industry. She did something that people found cute or sexy but she actually did provide more than just a "sexy moment". Along with some of the awesome former ladies of IGN, she created and starred on a female paneled podcast called Girlfight and it was really good. It provided a cool POV about games and other things that seemed to happened around them. It didn't come across as women trying to make a big deal as women doing a video game podcast nor did it come across as revolutionary pseudo-feminists who whined about how everything was unfair in the world. They were people who loved things and just so happened to be women. Sure, they brought their experiences and female viewpoints to the table but that's what made it awesome.

I say this all as someone who likes different voices and personalities in whatever medium I enjoy and I hope more people give Chobot a chance. I'm not a survivor horror style gamer so this title isn't really up my alley but I wish her and Zombie Studios the best of luck. I also wish the gaming community (and the world as a whole) will work towards not being too critical of people. If someone does something worth calling them out for, I understand but also give people a fair shake before dismissing their honest efforts in something they really care about.

On a sidenote:
Character pieces like this is why I have a hate/like view on Polygon. I think their reviews are crap but their character pieces and general videos are well done.

What I took away from the video that she’s just like any regular person who is juggling the immense task of taking care a newborn baby and trying to move her career forward (I really don’t get the hate). When I was in high school I was a total dick, I spent my time in a behavior disability class, I had to have teachers escort me down the hallways (long story), and finally got kicked out. In the 7 years since then, I have greatly changed as a person, I cut ties with all my friends (bad influences), and have fully embraced my nerd side ( games/anime/programming and even going back to school ). I’m currently working on an android game and would hate for someone to judge my game based on what they thought of me 7 years ago. I was never really a fan of hers (didn't know who she was until this thread), but watching this video made me want to at least try the game. It may very well suck, but I want to give it a shot before I decide on whether or not I like it.

Some people just try too hard to sound enlightened.

The issue isn't that she's female, it's that she's getting a writing gig without any prior experience because she's (relatively) famous.

That's ridiculous, and it'd be just as ridiculous if Shaq was made writer of the game. And the funny thing is that I doubt there'd be so many white knights defending him if he were in this same situation.

Do you remember the internet's reaction to Jeff Green getting a writing gig at EA?

There's practically no history of posts on this forum judging whether someone was worthy or unworthy to write some random game. There are no hard requirements for such a role. And the fact that the white knight meme keeps being brought up is proof enough of why this particular case is an issue with some.

still utterly shocked that she looks so bad in ME3.
How on earth did they not fix the shadows on her face and smoothe out her face to look better when compared to every other character in game they did both those actions.

This article should be more about how someone like Blair Herter got Jessica to marry him. I value Jessica's worth to the gaming press more than I do Blair.

Why should that factor in though? You have to start somewhere, and the fact that she has connections shouldn't be held against her. In any career, networking is an important factor to success. She got lucky and used that to launch a career in a field she has passion for, should we hold it against her? Maybe I'm just weird (I felt bad for dyack too), but I don't see this as a valid justification for the backlash.

As a side note: I would totally play a game that Shaq wrote!

Networking should mean nothing if we cared about merit or self worth.

You and I are quite different in this regard.

Good lord, this thread is full of some wretched-ass bile. All over a lady writing a survival horror game? It's not exactly The Last of Us 2 we're talking about. She's gotta get her start somewhere, I say good for her!

I would too, but I'd still think it'd be a ridiculous decision to hire him as a writer.

Good for her.

You realize the entire point of this article is to flip the backlash to sympathy in order to garner sales, right? If Atlus wasn't convinced that this were the case, they wouldn't have agreed to the article in the first place.

Why do people fail to understand this? It's exploiting the very same thread as sex appeal, just pulling it in the opposite direction. That's misogyny in a really twisted form.

The only way you bypass this is just let her do fucking work and judge that for what it is. But that's not what's going on here.

I did see it as a reaction to the backlash, yes. But, I saw it more as the developers trying to show that she was a gamer and did care about this project more than some believe (why they talked about the hospitals and such). I didn't feel like this was a plot to turn the tides in there favor (the crying was suspect), though part of it probably was. I think the point was to humanize her, to show people her family and detach her from the celebrity image. I felt like they succeeded in that regard personally.

I like her it is not her fault that she got famous because she is pretty, but I thing this girl is more smart than the majority of the videogame writers in this industry, hell if David Cage writes stories and be successful then Jessica is fucking Shakespeare compare to him. Now it is her chance to prove at something that she things she is good at. Give her a break jeez.

Hyperbole is off the charts in this thread.

A majority of folks in any industry get jobs by networking. Is not rare for people to even put their frat in their resumes at big companies hoping they bump into a fellow frat brother. Shit, the women who wrote how to kill a mocking bird, never written a publish book at all, or even after. And also the video game medium in story telling is fucking horrendous. I'm sure she will do better than Gears Of War or Tomb Raider reboot...Video Games stories are horrible. Is rare you get solid ones.

Sort of interesting that this story has generated more buzz on GAF than anything written about the game itself so far.

This is how the world works people, its about who you know and who people you know, know. Its how people get jobs and work all the time in every walk of life, Stop with the bitching.

Jessica actually seems to know something about games and actually seems to LIKE playing them...

So I can't really see the outcry against her...Now Olivia Munn though..I never got the impression she was either interested in either the games or the tech when she was on Attack of the Show.

This! Munn wanted to be famous to get OUT of games.

Jessica is a gamer...for all the outcry against her, things like her appearance in ME3 were because she is a fan of the franchise...

I can't find fault with a fan wanting to be part of the franchise...I would've jumped at the chance too...

Now Olivia Munn though...did she give you the impression that she was actually interested in the games/tech she was talking about...she never seemed to ever get invested in the industry and basically used it as a stepping stone.

I personally don't have a problem with this (as frankly, that's how most people get ahead) but complaints against Olivia make way more sense than the complaints versus Jessica

People use contacts all the time to get jobs in the games industry. It's quite incestuous in that way. Doesn't seem like this is any different from that. And putting Chobot up, front and centre for Daylight seems to be the right move if they want to raise the profile of this game - look at the conversation it's generating!

Having Chobot in Mass Effect 3 was really tacky and awkward - a marketing gimmick at its absolute worst - but that's on BioWare. I hope this move turns out well, for both the game and for her.

People don't have to be a "gamer" to cover the field of video games.

No hyperbole at all. Stop acting like the video game industry produces some amazing stories, it doesn't. Is rare when it happens.

That would be entirely subjective,

I know many people who like video games more than any other artistic medium on the damn planet.

So yeah.

Jesus Christ, this is still going on? She wants to pursue a career in writing so she has to start somewhere.
I could get it if this was a game people were looking forward to before they knew she was writing it and they suddenly announced this out of left field or if it was a sequel to an existing franchise, but this is a new IP and she has been a part of this from the start.

Give her a chance and after you play the game, give constructive criticism.

The way this seems to actually bother some people is insane.

She's looks like she's got a lot of pent-up anger inside and she's very emotional. She's actually a completely different person from the bubbly, happy and carefree girl we see presenting video game shows. It actually makes sense that she was a goth in school, they are typically really angry people, angry with the world. I might get flack for this but this was a very personal video about Chobot as a person, not about video games.

I like how most people forget that nearly all video game stories are awful in comparison to other mediums, and as mentioned above, I think a lot of people are completely underestimating the power and absolute necessisty of good networking to find work. It's not like we're having a first-time violinist playing the Tchaik violin concerto with the NY Phil at Carnegie Hall. We're having someone who has been in the industry writing her first game. People are mentioning Anthony Gallegos of Comedy Button fame, but are you all aware that Zombie Studios offered him a design job even though he had zero experience and his credentials were in journalism? Why isn't anyone raging over that? Selective hate, GAF. (For the record, I'm not angry at that either).

A few years back I spent some time listening to Chobot on Girlfight and it's true that her roots go just as deep as many of us on GAF. The fact that she's out there doing what she loves should be an inspiration to us.

It might sound like I'm defending Chobot to the death. I'm not. The game could suck. Judge then. preconceived notions are good for no one. This thread is just ridiculous.

I know many people who like video games more than any other artistic medium on the damn planet.

Some people might need exposure to other mediums then, like books. Sorry to say that games don't hold a candle to other mediums when it comes to story with some very rare exceptions.
