Well they carry the romance and the tragedy of the story. Alot more detail is given concerning their pasts with the emperor than there is to Wuming's. The drama is pretty much theirs.

Uh... that's a bit different than carrying the entire movie... but whatever I have like zero interest in getting into another discussion about these types of movies... thank god even with your scathing critique of it I can still enjoy FoL.

Never said they carried the entire thing.

I can enjoy Fist of Legend too. Two of the fights are among my favorites of all time, but as a whole, I think it's mediocre. *shrug*

Bought the DVD over a year ago, and enjoyed the movie. It had some pretty damn awesome fights (I was literally breathless during the first fight), but it felt more like style over substance. It's like they were trying too hard, trying to out-Crouching Tiger Crouching Tiger. Even the music sounded similar (yeah, I know it's the same composer).

" There's Tony Leung, and Maggie Cheung, two GREAT actors and they carry the story really."

Ok if the story is the entire movie(and that's normally what a movie is... a story from start to end)... and your above post says they carry the story.. then what am I suppose to think you are talking about?

Honestly I'm having a hard time understanding why that bothers you so much. Think of nearly any emotional scene in the movie and chances are you're gonna think of something connected to those two characters. The story isn't the entire movie seeing as it's wuxia, and there are more than a couple of action scenes, etc.

LOVED it!

I don't see how anyone could be bored with movies like this... (Although I took my little brother and he was bored... but I think that has to do with the fact that he couldn't keep up with the subtitles and the fact that he's a moron).

Because you made a general statement and now you're trying to make different statement and say you said the same thing.

Everything you see on a movie screen is part of the story, be it dialogue, action, silence, simply music, camera pans, etc.... From the time the lights go down til the credits everything you are seeing is part of the story.

I simply disagree with your initial statement. They carried the romance part...because they were the only one's having a romance.... the story, the entire story is carried by the strength of the individual pieces.... your followup post where you said they carried the romance and drama of the movie was simply a better statement that's all.

Just trying to make a clarification here... it's late I've got alot of driving to do in the AM... and I've been up since 5am...

You're really reading a little too much into this. Someone said Jet was a boring actor, so I posted that this movie wasn't really about Jet, because it isn't baout his acting, that's not why he was hired. He was hired for his face and the fact that he's the Mainland's biggest export as far as film is concerned. Yimou sid from the get go that he was trying to prove that he could make a commercial movie, a big blockbuster. I'm not trying to backpedal or anything, I'm attempting to clarify a post that I didn't think I'd have to defend. There's a big difference between the emotional core of a story, and the trimmings (Ziyi for instance,

If you simply disagree, ok. I've got no problem with that man.

Check out what I just found... it explains the meaning behind the use of color in the movie:

"In the flashbacks, the characters' costumes go from red (imagination) to blue (perceived reality) to white (truth). In the final flashback, the costumes are green (enlightenment/peace)."

Not sure if that's some guys interpretation or the actual answer, but it sounds good to me! Awesome stuff.

Subtitles, yes.

Ah well. I'll wait for it to hit NetFlix and watch it on the big screen where I can rewind to catch all the text bits. I have to watch anything with subtitles more than once (old school anime fan before all this new fangled fan dub and voice over stuff). The first time I watch it I am trying to really understand the story, the second time through I can really enjoy the movie because I know completely what its about.

I liked Hero, even not being a big Jet Li fan. I can't wait to see this tomorrow when I have free time. Trailer kicked ass, and Takeshi Kaneshiro (actor who plays Samanosuke in Onimusha 1/3) is in it.

Go in thinking you're going to see some straight action flick and you damn well will be disappointed.

You'd think with the advent of the web people would actually LOOK to find out what a movie is all about before they go see it ...and then come online and act disappointed that it wasn't the type of movie they thought it was.... then again I could be completely offbase.

Well said and whole lot nicer then I would said it. I sure Jet Li will team up with adam sandler someday in some flick, but before that happens read up abit before you see movie if you just want mindless action. Sometimes even action heros try something different.

Hero is like a porn movie, but instead of sex scenes sticked together with no plot whatsoever, you get color-themed wire-fu fighting scenes sticked together with no plot whatsoever.

I can't believe with what's been coming out of Hollywood these days that anyone can complain about Hero having no plot. Not saying it's Oscar material, but please.

Some people have really high standards in this thread, sheesh. I mean, I didn't really like the plot at all either, but still found the movie entertaining to watch.

I thought it was good, but I wasn't super impressed with it.

I didn't like how 2/3 of the movie wasn't even the story, I mean you are interested when it's first happening, but once you realize they aren't telling what really happened it just reduces it to eye-candy. The "real" story had potential to be much more engaging and beautiful if they hadn't bothered so much with what didn't happen, especially since you've already seen all the characters die (a couple times) by the end of the movie, so it's not as moving when you see them die for real even if it is under more noble contexts. If they were trying to top CTHD they failed because they were just screwing around for so much of the movie instead of developing the real characters.

I was also irritated with the subtitle job, it was obviously dumbed down well beyond the level it needed to be.

terrible translation, cut is only a couple minutes longer at best, score and soundtrack got fucked in a couple places. THANKS MIRAMAX OH WA-

Hero is a horrible movie. It is full of lame ass, retarded asian philosphy, full of overacted screaming and yelling fight scenes, horrible wire-fu, stupid story, VERY VERY shallow character development, etc. I was embarassed watching it. It is a truly horrible movie. I saw tons of people walking out of the theater during the showing I went to. And I mean TONS (at least 15-20 people).

Hero doesn't hold a CANDLE to Jet Li's best movie, which is Fist Of Legend.

the reason why miramax fucked up this movie is because they thought it was "too asian" for american audiences. thanks for proving them right. OH WAI-

I saw it last night and it wasn't quite what I expected. In fact, it was pretty lame. The wire-fu was shit. But overall it wasn't horrible.

I'll probably like the movie because i have an attention span beyond 10 min, i guess youd have to blame the trailer for some of the backlash it shows nothin but wall to wall action and wire fu.

Seems people haven't learned from the Crouching Tiger days that some people simply don't like a particular style of movie. And it isn't just because of the lack of action. It isn't like Goodfellas is loaded with action, yet you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't rate it highly.

All that matters is that you enjoyed it...if you do, who gives a fuck that others don't?

I just saw it today and enjoyed it. I knew it wasn't going to be a straight-up action flick because that's NOT what wu xia is really about. It's about dramatic swordplay, love, etc.

I liked how the story was told, with the story constantly being modified so you actually have to pay attention to what's going on. The visuals themselves are gorgeous. The colours, the cinematography...nice. The action did leave a bit to be desired, but I didn't mind because I'm used to floaty/wire-fu fighting. Plus, Donnie Yen is just really freaking cool.

I only didn't really like the ending part where the narration says that "he lived as an assassin but he died a hero" because I didn't really think he did. Sure, he got the emperor to see the error of his ways, but it still didn't change the course of anything. The emperor still conquered all of China.

Anyways, I enjoyed it, but it definitely could have been better too. 3/5 from me. I'd like to see it again when it comes out on video.

The plot must've skipped right over your head then.

Beautiful move. Every shot was so beautiful. The action and the acting were great.

I loved Maggie Cheung in "In the Mood for Love" and I loved her here as well. Great move.
