Jez Corden: “There is no devkit for the next Xbox right now, the whole idea of the next Xbox is that it’s a PC but in a TV friendly shell”, 2027

He's a former MS employee too. He sides that way for other obvious reasons though. Namely promoting what steam has ties to, PC, windows, DX, day one releases, etc.

He may or may not have a bias towards Xbox over PS but I don't think that governs his decisions on anything. The fact that he promotes Linux as a direct alternative to Windows speaks more loudly to me.

If that's true then the only way to run previous gen games would be through cloud.
I don't think they will be able to run Series games on a PC.

The impression I've gotten from a few news blurbs over the last year is that they're working on emulators for all their previous consoles that will run on a new super bare-bones version of Windows. I have nothing to back that up because it's a news story here, a comment on a podcast there, etc. But that would make sense if they're going in the direction of building a gaming laptop in an SFF case. Have a team of people under Jason Ronald working to get a gaming optimized version of Windows and these emulators so the new box can play all previous Xbox games, but the new games will just be PC versions.

Steam Box but for Windows might actually work, because the OEM's will actually produce a variety of the things and they probably won't be terrible if they use the same chip as Steam Deck equivalents do

It won't be an Xbox or a console by any stretch of the imagination but if this is what makes MS get off their asses and finally make Windows not dogshit in every environment other than on the desktop then I'm all for it

When the rumor is something negative about Xbox, it is usually true.

When it is something positive, it is usually a lie

I have already learned this by following the news about Xbox. Because Phill spends a lot of time trying to control the narrative on the internet and at the same time feed the fanaticism of Xbox fans on the internet

There is nothing really new.

So this rumor is very negative for Xbox fans, the fanatics that Phill tries to feed by telling them what they want to hear, so it must be true. It will be a pre-assembled PC that is much more expensive than an equivalent console that Xbox fanatics will find a way to invent some kind of "victory", even if they know it is a piece of crap.

I already know what the "victory" that Xbox fanboys will say on the internet will be:

"Suck it Sony, Xbox runs STEAM, EPIC Store, Xvideos, Pornhub, viruses, Trojan Horse and is full of *Stutter. Microsoft won, it is the vanguard of humanity"

*This may be the only real advantage and will be heralded as a supreme victory for the "xbox". MS will pre-compile the shaders and the game will not have stutter. Just like the Steam Deck

So basicaly it is a PC desktop with windows operating system and all the applications for work and studies like for example powerpoint, ms word, excel, adobe, autocad, etc? And GPU, and RAM, can be change like a regular PC? Well it will be strange to do my work on my sofa in front of my television 😁

This will never happen. 25 years ago, my Linux PC with an end-user mechanical hard drive loaded an Unreal Tournament 2004 map 2x faster than a Windows PC with 2 server hard drives in RAID0. I believe the difference was the Linux file system, which was much better than Windows. The file system I used on my hard drive was RaiserFS, which was made by ONE person voluntarily.

Every time I changed Maps in UT2004 I spent the first 10 seconds of the match alone on the server waiting for all the other players to load the map on their wonderful Windows PCs with FAT32 or NTFS junk.

Windows has always been controlled by some idiot sycophant in a tie who only did the minimum possible so that MS could maintain its monopoly. Windows will never get better because Microsoft is incompetent and only stays where it is thanks to the monopoly of Office and partly Windows.

Enjoy hanging around in MP lobbies for the cool kids like myself to turn up I guess.

Well that's what are consoles now, but if its more open, with same UI, I am happy about it. If we could plug there some better GPU or extend RAM it will be even better, but lets not dream too big

Yep.

No console-style optimiziations, no custom hardware. I think this project will be DOA if it's like he's saying. He's even talking about the launch being @ 2027, which is 1 year away from when the PS6 is largely expected to launch. This is honestly a death knell for the project imo as it adds considerable risk of it being Dreamcasted.

I personally trust HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 , if he says it's coming then it's coming (or at least his source has no reason to think it won't). But this feels very non-committal to me.

You can easily scrap an off-the-shelf parts order if there's no specific R&D happening for you there.
PS6 is expected 2027. It's chip is taping later this year.

Sounds like the Steam Machine with Microsoft throwing the Xbox logo on their specific build.

I don't see how that is any different than Xbox being dead. It would be like Sony releasing a music store on phone and calling the app WalkMan and saying "40 years later Sony WalkMan is still going strong".

Fun fact:

Hans Reiser, the developer of ReiserFS, was convicted of murdering his wife, Nina Reiser, in 2008.

True. Which is why this will fail.

There is no audience for this. Steam box already failed in this area.
I don’t believe it’s about creating a new viable platform but rather a transition point to PC so that
-they can offer a way for people to keep their libraries;
-prevent people from being upset about the change; and
-give some reason to not jump instantly to PlayStation.

I too think its in trouble as I agree the market for this is tiny

There will be other options that are more traditional too though, I think Phil even said as much there was a traditional console coming

I know everyone thinks this is doa, but if it's going to sell for profit from the minute 1 and they can claim "the most powerful device evah" it'll have it's niche

How many Series X owners are already? Say a third of 20-25 million?

Imagine those will jump in, that's between 7-9 million in the course of a gen, it's better than just axe Xbox for good 🤷‍♂️

If it is a PC then it won't be "most powerful" anything though. It needs to have a hook that makes it a compelling purchase. "Most powerful" has been tried a couple of times by Microsoft and failed. They need to try something new. Unless, they are just making hardware for the sake of making hardware.

But if it's a PC "the most powerful device ever" is just the latest AMD X3D CPU + latest NVIDIA RTX 90-class GPU.

And the next Xbox won't be that unless someone really screwed up and put OverHeat OverHeat in charge of Xbox next gen hardware. :messenger_sunglasses:

I know a PC will run circles around it even before it launches, but they are going to brand it Xbox something and pretend it's just a powerful console with "Windows features" or something like that which I guess they think it's the hook

Aimed at their core consumer base, it'll sell some

Going third party killed their console business, but they hope you buy a PC with an Xbox logo on it as opposed to a HP, Dell, Asus or Acer logo, that’s it.

And of course, they’ll sell it as a profit like all other PC vendors.
Well if the discord rumour( that has been proven true multiple times) is to be believed, the next Xbox will probably have hp, dell or assus logos. Xbox will lay down specification for the hardware but it will be third party manufacturers who make it. Kind of like the 3do

You can just throw together the best AMD processor and GPU and its still not a great value buy versus PS5 Pro and it certainly won't be vs PS6. So that brings the next question do they just end up releasing new models every year or two years?
Keep selling PS5s while they R&D their way out of the AMD/AMD HW hole and back to proprietary SONY/SONY HW game consoles.
PS needs to be a pure console born from an alternate family tree outside of the PC's evolution.
We have this in the PlayStation and PlayStation2 but lost it with the PS3/4/5 which are PCs to the point of needing USB to connect their controllers.
PS reborn as a pure console - booting into games directly, proprietary things (CPU/GPU, plug-in controllers, memory cards, stands, etc.), an updated XMB and an updated version of PS2's visual save system.
The list of proprietary features and things the next PS console has (things PCs don't have) needs to be at least as long as it is for the PS2 console.

Many dont want to game on a PC though
Sure, but if you are console only player why would you buy this over whatever PS will put out at the same time? I've bought every Xbox console since the 360, including refreshes like the One X, day one. Regardless of what people though of them, there was always some value proposition to be had, either games, or features, or hardware. I don't see anything that Microsoft could bring to the table with new hardware that would cause me to buy the next Xbox. I'm honestly struggling to find the value in Xbox hardware in 2025, much less 2-3 years from now.

We're gonna be fucked by Sony 🥲
We've been getting fucked by Sony for years, this will be nothing new.

Idk what any OEMS incentive is going to be to build hardware here. The reason Sony can do the hardware is making money back on games. Dell / HP making Xbox’s isn’t going to make them any money.

2027 I would assume FALL would be too late IMHO. giving PS5 / PRO and Switch 2 (2-3) years uncontested would be too much. That console better be so powerful and so cheap people are willing to dip their toes back into Microsoft Land.

It would certainly be interesting to see xbox machines go from closed platform to open. If it had some tv friendly UI thats basically just windows and you could steam, it could be pretty cool.
But i drastically prefer pcs to consoles. To the point I'm never buying consoles again, and wouldn't buy a pc-lite anyway.

I'm theory a console/hybrid Xbox is a good idea. You will ironically be able to play Xbox, PC, and PlayStation games on it. However, Xbox's problem has alwats been the execution. Just look at the Xbox One with the always online etc. That's how it is now on consoles..

Fab, sounds like Xbox is going back to the OG Xbox tech which was PC tech in a BIG Console box. Hope this means Xbox is getting rid of the SOC and will now have a separate CPU and GPU for power and that we won't have to mod the next box to get all the brilliant media functions like on the old OG Xbox.

When someone tells you they can deliver something perfect that has never been done before, you should question why it hasn't been done before.

There are some new things that have happened to even make this possible such as Sony releasing games on PC in addition to Xbox, but Sony isn't going to put their games on the Microsoft Store, so this device would have to let you use Steam.

If it lets you use Steam, Microsoft makes ZERO money from game sales. So where will they make their money from? It has to come from hardware. So this device is going to cost a premium.

I would assume what they'll do is put out at least 3 different models. An entry, intermediate, and high end model, but that Series S equivalent isn't going to exist, because Microsoft will charge at least 150-200 dollars premium on every device.

I'd also assume they'll release a gaming laptop series as well. Similarly with premiums.
