Jez Corden: Playstation Pulling Back From Releasing Their Tentpole Single Player Games on PC

The next Box shouldn't even be in the conversation there is zero reason to get one

I do wonder if the Steam Machine represents the final nail in the coffin for future Xbox hardware. Where they might have been able to carve out a niche creating a console-like gaming PC, they just got beaten to the punch by the owner of the largest PC gaming platform.

I mean at this point basically:

And Phil Spencer is like "Welcome to the Party Pal!" (aka Die Hard)

There is a difference between what he says on the podcast and his personal social media, and the articles that he writes for WC. None of that speculation goes into his official WC stuff, afaik. I dont have any problem sorting out whats speculation or not, so why should that damage his credibility? Guy should be allowed to say what he thinks, as long as its not an official Windows Central article.
Nobody is stopping him from saying what he thinks. He isn't immune from what he chooses to say damaging his credibility.

It's good that he can say what he thinks, because it allows people to judge how much weight to assign to his 'insight' on the industry.

Jezz problem is he does not clearly state when he is just guessing and he gets all this engagement and clicks and then walks back what he says when he gets blowback

Totoki's tragic capital allocation has turned Sony's Earnings Announcements into PlayStation's Earnings Announcements.

Sony's earnings Q&As are dominated by questions about PlayStation profit growth. Sorry, but PC ports and GaaS are here to stay.

It 'might', but the degree to which it 'might' will surely change over the life of the console. Realistically how many are going to be funnelled to PS5 now if all previous reasons for that to happen have had no effect?

Is it worth forgoing, say, Yotei's PC sales if not releasing it convinces one person to buy a PS5? Obviously not, so it is a matter of judging how likely that 'might' really is.

The funnelling strategy has some merit, but it is not a fixed amount of merit, and not one they should adopt a rigid attitude towards imo.

Well c'mon, realistically it'd be more than one person. It's not an insignificant number if SIE's own data is anything to go by, where they suggest it's quite a lot of PC users who are included in entering the PS hardware ecosystem this gen, with things as-is. A restructuring of that strategy to still retain PC support in some way (GAAS) while increasing the value proposition of their own console (i.e making non-GAAS exclusive) would likely only increase that rate of PC users getting a console, not decrease it.

And it's not like they have to drop PC gaming to play on PlayStation; I doubt most PC users getting PS5s this gen have done that.

The majority of PS4/5 users aren't bothered with Sony exclusives so the lukewarm response from PC gamers should have surprised no-one. In addition, as we rapidly accelerate towards the streaming age Sony's hardware will be increasingly redundant. PlayStation's only hope of survival in the future will be as some form of aggregator service.

How can only three sentences rival 50 Shades for one of the worst writings in modern history?

Ghost of Yotei is a little over 3 million

Did Astrobot even crack 3 million?

The overwhelming majority that buy a PS5 do not care about their exclusives

Well Yotei just came out not long ago; it's on track to do at least ~ 10 million but that is over a period of time, just like the first game. Which I think actually shows the benefit of these games staying exclusive: they help attract people to the console over the years, and build up sales that way. They are evergreen in a sense, similar to many of Nintendo's titles.

When you start putting those games everywhere yeah, you may still get similar sales numbers. Maybe you actually get a bit more sales. But you're getting a lot less people buying your console to play those games, meaning that's one less person who's fully tapped into the ecosystem maybe buying 3P games, services, peripherals etc. off your platform too. In that sense, I don't think the trade-off is worth it, not for anything beyond really old legacy games getting ported around, anyway.

this is 1000% expected. why would anyone buy your console if the game is just gonna be available elsewhere? the only reason people still buy nintendo's piece of shit underpowered outdated hardware are because of exclusives.

I literally bought switch 1 back then just to be able to play mario odyssey and botw

Wait, so Sony is preventing the NCsoft game on Consoles? Even the PS5?
One look at the character designs for NCsoft's title tells me Sony's Western management would be call their parents if Sony allowed a big budget title in one of their core franchises that walked back at least a decades hard work of making the absolutely worst looking characters in the whole fucking business.

Smart move. Even if they do release on PC they should make them exclusive to a Playstation PC Store at the very least for a year.

EA, Microsoft, Ubisoft, Bethesda and Epic all failed their attempts of having launcher exclusives. Everyone but Epic came crawling back to Steam. Epic didn't, but publishers stopped using it, even for limited store exclusives. Even EA is starting to ignore the EA app by releasing directly on Steam.

Meanwhile people like you are suggesting yet another PC launcher. Come on...

It's hard to get a read on them. At one moment, they'll be talking about how the math just isn't mathing for big-budget, console-exclusive, single-player games. And the next is the news about them pulling back, etc.

Though there is the possibility that there just won't be nearly as many single-player games released.

current list of ps5-exclusive 'tent-pole' single-player games:

demon's souls remake
ghost of yotei
astrobot
...
GT7 also i guess?

Anyway I was really dying to sell the PS5 so I hope this is not true..

to be fair the only upcoming games I am insterested in is Kojimas.. and i bet DS2 gets a PC announcement any time now

After Ragnarok I lost all interest in Santa Monica and Naughty Dogs latest looks.. well.. special

did anyone from Sony actually state any of this, or were these kinds of things just said by the oustered Shuhei Yoshida in his interviews after he had already left Sony?
Jim Ryan, Hermen Hust, Totoki and Nishino said it while being at Sony

Is Death stranding 2 owned by Sony?

Ah already answered.
Sony sold the IP to Kojipro, but Sony published, funded and codeveloped the game (plus like in any first party game they handled Q&A, marketing etc).

When selling the IP to Kojipro maybe they agreed a deal where they gave the IP to Kojima to allow him make movies, anime, mangas, watches, apparel and so one, but regarding games they'd continue being published/managed/funded/etc by Sony plus the related (temporal) console exclusivity.

Wait, so Sony is preventing the NCsoft game on Consoles? Even the PS5?
The NC Soft guy didn't say that.

They busy are doing what they pitched and signed: a mobile game (which like the other ones will also run on their own PC emulator).

Could they also port it to PS5? Technically yes, and he personally thinks it would be cool to release it too in PS5. But as now they are making the mobile game and haven't signed a PS5 version (they could sign it in the future, the game is still in pre-alpha).

Being a Sony IP obviously would need Sony's ok for the port, and before greenlighting the port pretty likely Sony would want to see if the final game is worth it, and if ends having a too big overlap with the upcoming Horizon Online and Horizon that Guerrilla are developing for PS5/PS6, or with whatever other projects they may have.

Thank-frikken-goodness. I hope this is true. The day Sony stops releasing their exclusives on the personal computer, is the day I get back into playing video games. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Makes sense, when did last last release/announce any big ports?

Steam Machine and Xbox Magnus aren't direct competitors, but it's not a good image having Sony's AAAs on there.

Fully expect GaaS games to continue being multiplatform going forward though.
yes it does considering Sony and Nintendo are the only two first parties left

He is delusional, Sony first party games make now almost as much revenue outside PS (most in PC) than in PS, and Sony is working in their own PC store and launcher.

Sony also stated multiple times that PC is a platform with a huge ROI for them (all their tentpole ports have been profitable) and that instead of cannibalizing console sales PC is helping to grow their console userbase's with new players. The active userbase of their console is at all time highs.

What Sony could do, pretty likely at the same time they release PS6, would be to start releasing all their games, including tentpoles, day one on PC PSN, their own store. And maybe with crossbuy with their console version. And to stop releasing their own games on Steam or Epic Store, or maybe to release them in Steam & Epic a couple years after releasing then on PSN.
I think Sony should have a consistent policy across the ecosystem.

Their own PC and Android stores. Release game Day 1 on the Sony PC store. Cross Buy, Cross Save, Cross Play between PSN across PC, Consoles, Cloud, Handheld.

The PC store should act as the hub for their streaming and subscription service. Games should be streamable via PS+ Premium Buy and Stream catalog on Day 1. Allow streaming of games via Nvidia GFN and Boosteroid only if purchased via PS PC store. And also PS+ Premium integration like how Gamepass integrates with GFN. PS+ Premium streaming should be available on every major TV, PC, Laptop, Tablet, Mobile, and browser PWA web app.

Games then enter PS+ Premium tier game catalog after 12 months, and Extra tier after 18 months.

Put games on all other PC stores and other consoles after 12 months at full price. So basically One year timed exclusivity to PSN ecosystem.

Instead of wasting money on third party timed exclusives, they should get 4 indies or AA games to launch Day 1 on PS+ Premium, with native support across the full PS ecosystem, on PC, Console, Handheld, Cloud. So basically 48-50 Day 1 third party games every year, with their first party games getting added 12-18 months after release.

Also, use MSIX packaged format to sign and notarize the games so that they can't be pirated for the first 12 months. Denuvo on Steam/Epic stores.

So true. Korean Aloy > Chinese Aloy (Tencent) > Zero Dawn Aloy > Forbidden West Aloy.

what part of 'ps5 exclusive tent-pole single player games' did you not get? for one thing, sony-published does not equal 'tent-pole'. also, most of these titles are either ps4 &/or pc as well, or weren't even developed by sony-owned studios. sony's primary big-budget ('tent-pole') single-player studios: naughty dog, santa monica, insomniac, guerrilla, sucker punch...

most of these games are already available on PS4 or their not even first party. He meant real first party games that can push the console. I mean, most of these games already sold much on PS4 and many players already played them. Many like rise of Robin and lost soul didn't sell well and are mid.

Yea ok so Sony is just going to abandon a their pc porting studio and realeasing games. Yea ok until we've heard some thing officially from Sony it's business as usual. Some of you console warriors are busting your loads too fast.
