JezC:If you can at least theoretically afford a gaming PC but DON'T want to game on PC, what are your reasons for sticking with a console?

I'd think if it's a person's main hobby and they have the money (and want to do a lot more than just gaming) they would tend to go for the better more flexible platform. But in the end I'd just put it in the "who cares" box.

I have both but an optimised well running game is always better on PC because Consoles too are a PC and all PCs are consoles it's just that on PC the game is more future proof both in visual terms and fluidity. That being said I like Controllers, Big Screen and Playstation Trophies.

Edit: Ok I am gonna be specific if PC ports were not generally too broken I would not consider gaming on Consoles but usually PC is about putting a lot of effort in running a game which can be equally rewarding as it is frustrating. I have FFVII running miles better than any console but I will still say others to stick with PlayStation one because console performance is largely consistent and that goes for a lot of games until we stitched to Unreal Engine and RT mess. I genuinely hope PSSR gets better but just the attitude of so many people on this forum who get wooed easily by sony's substandard effort I doubt that. Gaming is in sad state in that light but hey I am happy with all those PS4 looking games like Metaphor. It's not just about graphics at the end of the day. FSR4 ML Upscaling is where things can get interesting.

Why is he conducting market research on behalf of Microsoft?

So I guess the new narrative will be "everyone move to PC". To which I say, especially to those who have been cheerleaders of Xbox throughout their demise over the course of the last decade:

I have a PC with a 4070 and still do the vast majority of my gaming on consoles and handhelds (and Steam Deck). The user experience is much slicker, there is generally less fucking about trying to get games to run, you can have a physical collection on a shelf and the consoles are powerful enough now that there is not a noticeable difference from the high settings in many releases. You get the occasional game where the PC version just blows console out the water (Cyberpunk, Black Myth) and some genres are just better on PC (RTS games, Baldur's Gate 3), but that's what the 4070 is for.

I've always saw the cost analysis the opposite way. It's way more expensive to game on console long term than PC. PC just has higher entry costs. You're paying monthly fees, your digital games cost more, you have rebuy all your favorites anytime a new console comes out. Backwards compat is not guaranteed and next gen all BC is probably wiped out by lack of disc drive etc. I guess only in the most western economic sense is console cheaper. Just cheaper on day 1 but you basically pay a fine every month after that.

I think console is more of a luxury product in some ways. If you've got money to throw away you can just rebuy all those games and not sweat it. Personally I've got other uses for that money, like retiring at 50.

As a PC gamer, I'd advise console gamers to just stay away from it.

...it turns you into a E-Peen obsessed, FOMO fuckhead.

The constant desire for an extra 20fps, regardless of the cost, is toxic as fuck.

Playing games becomes secondary to the technology.

Jensen will look at how these guys have allowed Xbox to get away with murder for the last decade and will propose that Nvidia simply start selling dreams while annually repackaging the 4090 to sell to us every year.

That's what will happen.

Too many great options besides just improving the resolution or framerate for me to not play on PC. PC saved my playthrough of FF16. Was able to mod in a hard mode that increases the damage the enemies deal and makes them more aggressive. Any of you that have played 16 on PS5 knows it's braindead easy on normal and there is no way to increase the difficulty on first playthrough. I also increased the FOV and have Clive centered on the screen instead of leaning to the left. Modders have already added TAA to Metaphor Refantazio. PC FTW.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
For me, PC is the obvious best platform to play on for many reasons.

That said, I understand many would trade those reasons for the convenience a console provide. So ti each their own.

-A good PC would be more expensive
-it's not plug and play
-no Sony exclusives on day one
-components to be upgraded more frequently, so more costly.

The biggest issue for me is the Price. Even though I could afford it, I just find it unreasonable to sink 1500-2000€ in a good PC because of course, if I'm moving to PC, I want all the bells and whistles.

- Ease of use
- Low upfront cost
- Physical media
- Controller features
- Great exclusives/timed exclusives

He’s like all the other Twitter green rats who are now following the “just get a PC” directives from Uncle Phil.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the likes of Jez, Colt Eastwood and Dustin Legarie were all copied into the same email and just ran with it.

If you’re into PC though then power to you, great platform, just not for me.

I don't know who that guy is, but it seems he's not very popular here. The obvious answer is: That's none of your business or because i don't want to.

Some other common answers to make this thread at least somehow useful::

- Convinience
- I need 3 Master's degrees in order to operate it (exaggeration)
- I need to manually install patches every 5 minutes (exaggeration)
- I don't want to upgrade every 6 weeks (exaggeration)
- I can't use it on my couch
- All my friends have a console
- Pc is full of cheaters
- I would miss my achievements or trohies
- I invested too much into the ecosystem
- I want to collect, trade and sell discs
- I don't want to spend that much money

I haven’t had a pc for over 6 years now, but I do miss it. I’m going to wait for the 2nd iteration of the Steamdeck and jump back in with that or something similar. I don’t need or want a cutting edge rig, I just want to play the truckload of quality indies that don’t hit the consoles.

I am going to make this simple for Jez.

I am not a Sony fan
I am not a Nintendo fan
I am not a Xbox fan
I am not PCMR.

I am a fan of video, arcade and computer games and it all started in the late 70's when my parents brought home that glorious Atari 2600 and I spent my time at the bowling alley arcade room. I might have leaned one way or another at different times in my life but when it comes down to it, I will play on whatever device has a game on it I want to play. Even, gasp, iOS.

Back in 2008-2012 as a mainly PC gamer for most of my life, I was so jealous of ps360 gamers and their cool exclusives.

Today ? with no offense, I see people that only game on consoles as dinosaurs. Not even trolling or something, i see them as people stuck in the past with that attitude of "hey bro i wanna sit on a couch" attitude or "pc so complicated", when there are so many options at your disposal now with full controller support, awesome steam sale, steam deck and other portables etc etc. PC is simply THE platform right now for Core Gaming.

Thank you GabeN, i have no doubts without Steam we would still be in the dark ages of 2006-2010.

Although I can afford a gaming PC, I don't really have a lot of time for gaming these days. It doesn't make sense for me to drop a four figure sum on a gaming PC.

Even if I had more time, I'd probably still not splash the cash. I'd rather spend the money on a family holiday abroad than a gaming PC.

However, I'll bite if CA announce Medieval 3: Total War, or Feral Interactive announce a remake of Medieval 2.

I like to sit in my living room in front of a big TV.

I work in IT so don’t want to fuck around with drivers, compiling shaders, setting etc.

I can totally see the benefit of it however and did used to game on PC back when the OG Rainbow six was about.

If I had more time and money (I do pretty well but have two kids and would rather prioritise other things than the latest graphics cards) I am getting a Pro however, my first mid gen refresh and am looking forward to it.

When my kids are a bit older and I have some more time I’ll definitely be getting a PC.

I have a great gaming PC with a 3090ti and some 13900k or 14 and I still prefer to game on consoles.

The reason: I don’t know anything about PCs or consoles, just that I like to hit the button on the controller and play. I do not enjoy sifting through settings and options on the game, on the Nvidia card and all that stuff.

I also feel like a dipshit paying 1500 and more for the top graphic cards, CPU, cooling junk, SSDs, the RAM thingies and all that.

I still play on PC depending on the mood and to play Shadowgate. My opinion is buy whatever you’re interested in, as I don’t really care.

On a side note, I can’t really tell the difference in anything unless there is a very large delta, probably also caused by my lack of caring.

I got a semi-decent gaming pc a couple of years ago. I'd recommend it but you'll need to be prepared to:
  • troubleshoot issues with the PC
  • troubleshoot issues with games
  • If you want to mod, troubleshoot why they don't work as expected
Sometimes I just can't be bothered with the above. You avoid a lot of the above if you stick to console gaming but you might not get the performance you want.

Plug and play.. thats it .. I have the money more than enough... but just cant deal with the hassle of pc gaming ... yes I know some PCMR will came here saying is exactly like consoles, sorry I dont believe you so dont even try it.

Now... I have to say.. with sony going downhill like they are.. theres a good chance I might migrate to pc.. maybe.

Used to be ease of use and cost effectiveness.

What’s happened in the past 10 years is that PC gaming has become more streamlined so has narrowed the gap in terms of the usability factor. In the same period console gaming has become more and more expensive with ballooning hardware, software and subscription costs whilst PC hardware costs have only increased marginally - narrowing the cost effectiveness factor.

Every time someone mentions the cost of a gaming PC, you know is coming from someone that never owned or even care about owning a gaming PC. If you are comfortable with a worst, yet easier to setup experience, that's fine. Consoles have come a long way. Just don't try to justify yourself because you sound dumb.

A younger me probably did insist you can just use a PC on a couch with a TV and do blah blah blah

There's still no 100% it just works UI for this though. A PS5 does just work for that use case, and I'm an adult and can just pay to solve for that.

If Microsoft really takes the handheld (and doubling for a TV) UI seriously that could be a thing, and Linux is kind of creeping up there.

Having done the high end PC tour, the simple fact is the things I really care about improving or that would elevate most games are not improved on PC

e.g. animations, geometry and logic/ai design

We're all eating the same cake, just with different quality icing. And it's much nicer eating that slightly lesser cake at home with all your amenities and creature comforts than at the office/hallway.
