Jimmy Fallon Cratering in the Ratings, Skirting Near Third Place in "Late Night Wars"

I don't really keep up with any late night, did Colbert ever own up to the Spicer thing?

Just look at all the late-night videos trending on YouTube every day. Hardly any of them are ever Fallon. TBH I kinda forgot he even existed.

Honest to god I did as well, lol. i feel like a lot of my exposure was seeing his stuff being shared by friends on Facebook but that dried up ages ago

His schtick is boring. I'm glad Stephen Colbert is winning, and bringing back actual, genuine interviews and commentary to late night TV. Fallon's era of party games and forced viral videos has worn super thin.

There is no longer a place for apolitical behavior. Get off the fence or get out of the way.

The problem is tousling Trump's hair isn't apolitical. It's political. Trump's not a guy you can be "Neutral" on. He's done too much. "Both sides", "Grab 'em by the pussy", "Those sons of bitches"....he stands for things that are morally repugnant.

I dislike all conservative thought but this isn't about whether you're conservative or liberal--he's someone who has political power that should have none. And you're either for him, or against him. If you're lukewarm you get spit out, and that's what America seems to be doing.

Fallon is terrible and Colbert after that stunt with Spencer lost any respect I had for him. Kimmel seems like a cool dude.

Conan is the only talk show host I care about. He has been doing some amazing stuff like his trip to Israel and Palestine. Awesome stuff that was not only funny but also very poignant and well done.

I wish this would happen more often to the TV hosts that helped normalize the current white-supremacist loving administration we have today.

Fallon can fuck off, and I hope his ratings plummet even more.

Edit: Also, fuck 'em for replacing Twister.

Fallon's problem is that none of his personality shines through at all. He's constantly so neutral other than laughing at things or making a few sterile quips, you don't see any of him shine through.

The good hosts all have core aspects of their personality shine through to make themselves into characters along side their bits and guests.

Jimmy just feels like pure genericism, and maybe 20 years ago that would fly and he'd be okay, but I have quite literally limitless entertainment at my fingertips almost every minute of every day. He needs to allow himself to shine through, if there's even anything there to shine, if he wants to survive.

I think that's the gist of it. Kimmel himself is just a bland host and interviewer. The strongest thing about his show are the gimmicks like celebrities read mean texts and the occasional skit.

He's living and dying by those, and it's finally catching up with him.

A few weeks ago I saw his show on tv for the first time in forever, and he tried going at Trump.

It was horrible. His impression is trash and the whole thing just felt... weird.

Conan is a perfect example of how a host can be apolitical and still have a message to state when something that rocks the nation happens.

Meanwhile Fallon is playing beer pong with whomever he can get to come in.
Would Conan be considered apolitical? He clearly despises Trump and insults him all the time.

Conan went to Mexico after Trump and did an entire show with a full on Mexican crew to show Mexico in a positive light. He is far from apolitical.

If anything Conan actually acts instead of just talking like other hosts.

He's also talked to Syrian refugees when he visited Germany. He's very dialed in to the political atmosphere and seems to genuinely care.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Kimmel has grown so much. The difference between his and Adam Carolla's personal trajectories since The Man Show is amazing.

Yeah it seems he really fucked himself with the Trump interview, but he's one of those guys whose success I never understood. I've read he's among the nicest guys in the industry, but I've never liked his product. He's just not entertaining, and I guess it took an interview with Agent Orange for people to realize that.

Sadly, a lot of GAF turned on Conan when he went to Israel last month. Many GAFers are very anti-Israel.

Except Conan showed how people lived in Palestine, went to a refugee camp, an hospital and showed tons of aspects of what’s happening there instead of just joking around in Tel Aviv.

He even included a bit about the history of the region and talked to people from all sides of the conflict.

He did more in that trip than Colbert did his entire run.

He's not apolitical. He just significantly more clever at disguising his political stances as comedy than literally everybody else in late night.

It's funny, conservatives were talking about how the late night shows getting political were losing ratings. Turns out it's the opposite.

So when does Leno come back?

All jokes aside, this isn’t really surprising. I would rather watch EVERY other late night host before I tuned into Fallon.

Was there even a thread on that? I don’t remember seeing it and it’s the first time I’m hearing about him doing a remote there.

As someone who only watches these shows through YouTube clips, Conan is the undisputed funniest person on Late Night TV. Not as much clapter and pats on the back.

Letterman is getting a new show, but it won't be on network TV.

Norm Macdonald could do the show. It would be hilarious. I'm not sure if he would do the kind of cause comedy that is en vogue for late night.

I think Jimmy Fallon needs to be a little more assertive, but he would never translate into the non Jay Leno path to late night. There is nothing subversive about his show from everything I have seen. He has the spirit of a child who just wants to have a good time. If you can't get people talking about something outrageous the morning after then you aren't a successful Late Night show in this day and age.

Colbert, Stewart, and Oliver nurtured audiences and really understood what made young people and now professional aged people tick. They shaped the landscape and Colbert deserves a lot of credit for pouncing back on this trend after playing it more straight in the beginning.

What was the Pence stunt Colbert did..? I've been trying to dial back my exposure to the political nonsense the last month or so, so I must have missed it.

Exactly. He doesn’t shy away from that at all and does his best to show the US that refugees are just normal people that are in a terrible situation. And he does this by actually talking to them instead of just talking about it. He has shown that the media representation of Mexicans, Muslims and refugees is completely wrong. That’s a political statement, and one that is needed in times like these. He also shows genuine care. I mean, he went to the border with Syria where actual war is happening!

Conan has been doing amazing work with his pieces. All while being funny!
