They want certain people in title matches, but they're fucking idiots at booking, so they have to end up having the matches include anywhere from 3 to 6 people total because the ones they actually want to have fight, they don't want to lose just yet
Case in point, Universal title match. Brock's there until Mania, his last date, so if you want him losing the belt, you either have to be sure you're fine with him losing clean this early (instead of holding off till Mania) or have to have someone else lose. So you add Joe in, because they don't want Reigns or Braun looking bad either, but they love Reigns and the crowd loves Braun, so they can't not be in the match/feud.
If they were good at booking, they'd either be comfortable having people lose occasionally in not-dumb ways, or wouldn't put 2 or 3 people in a feud they don't want any of them losing

I loved it, a lot. Aspects of the old series and new, great character work and stuff that just felt straight up like Lynch. Horrible violence dissociated with bizzare humor. Wonderful stuff this week.
