Update on the WWE Network (via Meltzer):

With all the latest round of questions and speculation on the network, we’ve been told that DirecTV has said they have no interest in carrying it, which right there knocks about 30% of its potential revenue off. There was talk that very few cable carriers are committing to paying a per subscriber rate for it, which is what they were counting on for profitability. The other alternative is to be like Showtime and charge a subscription fee directly to consumers. The risks of that become huge. If they get the level of response for the network that they got for 24/7, which would be a worst case scenario, the company could lose more on the network than they earn in profits on wrestling, and that would still leave the movie business to put them in the red.

Plus, 24/7 interest faded as time went on. Keep in mind that’s a worst case. But with that model, breaking even would not be easy. Plus you have to factor in if they put eight or nine PPVs per year on the network, that it would eliminate much of the revenue from those events. Now, I expect they’ll continue to offer the PPVs via traditional model because many people won’t order the network (although the monthly network price would have to be significantly lower than the price of a single PPV). But if you can get the network for $9.95 and in exchange, WWE and your cable provider loses a monthly $44.95 or $54.95 order, that becomes a different issue. Plus, at that point you cut the value of your “B” shows from $44.95 to $9.95 to the average consumer.

With the promise of all the programming ordered can they get 1 million regular subscribers to the channel in North America (the only market offering it at first) when 24/7 Classics on Demand in 2010 worldwide had about 80,000 subscribers? November, the last scheduled internal launch date isn’t that far off, although publicly they have not committed to any date. However, they did this past week cut a new commercial for the channel which in theory should start airing soon.

I still think WWE should forget about a network of their own. Just deal with Sky to make a Sky WWE channel, they are damn close to airing everything already.

I love this week's True Long Island Story's "Where's Trent" segment. It's like watching a Jeff Hardy video made by someone who isn't semi-retarded.

The latest was hilarious and a freaked out Kofi is always good, but it always leaves me wondering how long will WWE keep paying Trent Barreta to do nothing anywhere in the company.

I'm not a fan and I don't particularly care if he is used or not, I'm just amazed about wasted money.

Wouldn't work in the United States. Raw and Smackdown are on two separate, well-established cable channels.

why didn't he ask if I beat my wife? I could have a wife and you guys probably wouldn't know about it at all cause I don't mention it.

I could very well be married.

Just finished watch the great american bash smackdown and loved it. It was a fun light-hearted show with some good segments and matches and i enjoyed it.

This will be a giant test to the ego of Vince McMahon. The WWE network is destined for failure and everyone in the TV buisness knows it. The costs to start a network from the ground up are insane and if he launches the network and it fails miserably WWE could very well go bankrupt. Surely Vince understands this, I would absolutely hate the WWE to go up in smoke based on Vince's ego.

I really think WWE network might be the death of WWE.

Its clearly a really bad idea that will cost them tens of millions in the time where they are only barely making any money.

The entire wrestling industry and not just WWE are in a slump in terms over everything. Live attendance, TV ratings, merch sales, recognizable characters etc, All are the lowest they have been since the early-mid 90's and things show no sign of turning around.

Its just not time for this kind of money gamble.

Tossing in PPV's wont do shit as well. It will just mean less people buying PPV's. The current people buying them will just get the WWE network and the people streaming them on janky streams will continue to do that because its free. I dont see any growth there.

As for watching archive footage meh. Thanks to the internet I have and can every classic match I remember from my childhoot so many times it would be silly to pay to see them again. I dont really need to see the Bret vs Shawn Iron Man match again.

But for god sake then need to talk to the World Wildlife Fund about using the attitude WWF logo for archive footage because when 25% of the footage has to be blurred out I would rather watch the match on youtube or dailymotion that some guy ripped from his VCR.

If this network happens I am saying within 2-3 years WWE will ether be no more or Vince wont be in charge.

Damn Jazz is jacked.

If you read my review of the ACW Queen of Queens tournament you'd have known that already. She was absolutely ripped to shreds. Her and Rachel Summerlyn put on the best match I've seen live so far all year too.

And SoulPlaya--Yeah, she's still with the "Red Dog" Rodney Mack. He was at the same ACW show. He did a "White Boy Challenge" vs. "The Centerfold" and it was pretty fun as well.

I made a statement that if the brand continue on this path, then we will be talking TNA 15 year as the one where they were the lone show on the air.
