Jurassic GAF |OT| The Park is closed, the World is open

If I were not away from my computer I'd draft an article warning people not to buy the ost set. Seems every other one came broken or torn, not to mention the misprinted logo on the pamphlet cover. I'm utterly disappointed I gave that company 60 dollars of my money.

They didn't even have the music remastered specially. That was done for theatrical re-releases. What a joke. For 30 dollars less I'd be much more enthusiastic.

I don't know why they shipped it in soft packaging. That's definitely not going to cut it with a case of that thickness, with that cheap, brittle plastic they use for jewel cases. Should have been bubble wrapped inside a rigid package.

Wasn't aware of the misprinting, but I don't have my copy on me right now. What did they do?

"Jurassic Pork"

For what it's worth, I emailed them and they're sending me a whole new set, and I don't even have to return the original one. I hadn't even asked for that. Guess I'll buy a replacement case for the first set and give it to my friend for Christmas. :p

2011 is an atrocity, what they did with the color temperature. That is not the color of Jurassic Park, and I'm not sure why they gave it cool grading. The warmer grading is the way Jurassic Park was always meant to be presented.

2013 transfer does have some flaws - they reduced film grain and finer details due to the limitations of converting an older film to 3D. Ideally, I'd want the color of the 2013 film with the grain of 2011, and the edits (such as removed Dilo frill strings) of 2013. Also, 2013 has a WAY better sound master, and overall just looks better in motion.

Demoncarnotaur, what do you mean by "the way Jurassic Park was always meant to be presented"? Did the color temp change from theatrical to the original release?

Yep.

Much like 2011, 2013 was done from scratch, so it's not 100% accurate.. however, the warmer grading is closer to its theatrical release in 93.

Also, allegedly the original prints were lost in the Universal Studios fire, and while Universal denies/doesn't acknowledge it, I've heard it from quite a few. That may be why they had to rework those from scratch, and couldn't get the best results at times.

Well, then you're getting into the question of what was "intended" versus what actually looks better. I frankly prefer the cooler, more naturalistic look of the 2011 transfer, especially with the less heavy-handed DNR, and especially when you get into dark scenes with faces; it's like they cranked up the "moody" knob and it looks bad. And yeah 3D conversions are not my jam in general so the artifacts and retouching aren't great. It's nice they removed the vfx seams but I've never noticed them before anyhow, and I'm not a fan of complaining about a lack of frame-by-frame perfection.

This is basically my stance across the board, so yeah.

Plus, regardless of which one is actually more accurate, the 2011 feels more accurate to my ("incorrect") memories, which I guess matters more to me anyway.

Though I will say, I actually prefer the 2013 grading in one specific scene - the lunch scene. It kind of matches up better with the tone and overall presentation style, which all deliberately stand out.

I lost my dog today. It's rough. Really really rough.

But I wanted to share something before I forgot: Universal registered two new domains... islanublarrescuemission.com and allcreatureshaverights.com

Both are likely jw2.

Sorry to hear about your dog. May they Rest In Peace.

Talking about the links. JW2 seems very likely. They talked about it being a big change and the whole "dinosaurs having rights" would be a big shift from "they're just creatures created for our amusement" some people have had in the series.

The biggest curiosity is the rescue mission part. With how things are sounding, and how it's supposed to be a more horror-esque film. Grady and Co going to a wild island could work.

If he totally cool with getting something kind of like The Lost World, but you know without all the flaws. Combing that and JP3 would kind of give a unique movie that stands on its own.

I'm just spit balling here
But We know that Ingen got a lot of the data from world. So perhaps they go and start messing around on the islands along with dinosaur treatment that gets out. Public is mad about it, but due to them being cloned creatures they technically don't have any rights. So the good guys go there to perhaps save someone who could get more info out on ingens doing.

Very loose idea, and you all know how I really want a film with a military big bad being a main element. But I could see something like that happening.

Universal isn't gonna take a huge risk or crazy story right after world that has the dinosaurs all over the world or introduces ice age creatures and such.

Also the whole safari idea is another idea that could work too. Perhaps the island is open to hunting now and people are mad about that.

Very intrigued to see where this goes.

Rescue mission is to save Lowery who is still sitting in the control center distraught over Claire bullying him (and whatsherface ditching him) playing with his dinosaur toys and quoting his Malcolm book.

I honestly forget if he's shown at the end area despite seeing it so many times.

That's great and all, and I love Giacchino, but the dude is gonna be overworked.

I'm waiting for a truly great, great score from the man. All his scores have some great tracks, but I've yet to see anything from him that finally promotes him to godhood.

That said, loved his JW score, so I hope he does well for this, too.

I'm still waiting for a great, great, great, great, great, great, GREAT score from him.

All I've gotten from him so far are great, great, great ones. It's a bummer. :p

He actually was overworked for Jurassic World, he did that, Tomorrowland, and Inside Out almost simultaneously. He should be scoring this around April/May 2018, so it depends on what other things he's doing at that time.

Though he seems to work well under pressure and on tight schedules. He did Rogue One in 4 weeks and that was terrific.

To be fair, I think that the changing tastes and scourge of temp tracks has severely hurt composers' ability to turn out their best and most memorable scores, but I do agree not just with Giacchino but the entire roster of composers out there.

What's the last film that had a theme people everywhere remember? By my reckoning we haven't seen a truly transcendent one since Harry Potter.

He reached it when he composed the Medal Of Honour theme.

I think people are too stuck in the past with themes. Nothing new is going to reach something like the fucking SW theme for some people, for example.

I thought Giacchino's Jurassic World theme was marvelous. I still find it in my head sometimes.

People even thought this about Williams' work on TFA, which I also loved. It's like REY'S THEME IS NO DUEL OF THE FATES, DISAPPOINTMENT!!

Frontline is still his best

But since then?

Come on fellas. I want him to be bigger.

I disagree wholeheartedly, to say that everything that could ever be as great has already been done up to now is a travesty to talented and creative people. We simply haven't heard the next big thing yet.

Yeah but I think a theme can be great without being a pop culture phenomenon. Jurassic Park already has its themes anyway. I was just saying I do think Giacchino has did some great things already. If we're talking about themes the average Joe would recognize, try out something like A Window to the Past from Prisoner of Azkaban, which is absolutely memorable and well, incredible but few would know of it.

John Williams has the iconic theme game on lockdown and I doubt he's ever going to be topped in that regard. But I'm fine with great great great great. I would also argue that it takes a composer like John and a HUGE new sensation like Potter as you cited to lead to themes like those you suggest.

I respect what they do and acknowledge that what they do is still amazing but I care more about it than the "average Joe." Williams did TFA and some still felt that had nothing superlative as I'm enamored with Rey's theme.

Finally a proper comparison between the blurays.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doJLCU-vtAo

The 2013 noise reduction is totally unnecessary. Worse even is the 'hairbrushing' technology. Who gives a shit!

I've seen JP maybe hundreds of times yet never noticed the cables on the Dilophosaurus. Mental filter and all that.

EDIT: Ah, the hairbushing was for the 3D release. Makes sense but I don't care for 3D movies. I caught the 3D re-release in cinemas but that was far more memorable for getting to enjoy the film with full cinema surround sound.

Oh man, I think I just realized what happened here. EDIT: (and I should have probably read the YouTube description first since they point all this out) They took the 3D release and put that on the Blu-ray, that's why there's all the weird shit stretched and warped and hairs removed and rotoscoping. All that shit was done when they did the 3D conversion. It would have been a pain in the ass to rotoscope each hair and displace them in 3D, so they just got rid of the fly aways. This is probably why they removed the cables and stuff too. They had to rotoscope out elements, and move them for each "eye" to create depth, and change the dimensions for certain things. All that shit made it to the 2013 Blu-ray even though it's 2D.

It's like when I saw Star Trek Into Darkness in 3D but halfway through one of the bulbs burned out, so we saw the rest in 2D, but it was the "eye" with all the alterations for the 3D conversion so suddenly without the 3D effect I was noticing all these horrendous artifacts, people obviously cut out weirdly from the background, the background warping around edges, etc.

I think he asked for it

I hope he will be back in time for Jurassic World 2.

And some more cool news. Movie will probably look amazing.

From my understanding we were actually due for a title drop, Mattel update, and a little bit more by now. No clue what happened to all of those plans...

Hopefully soon!

Also, as Oscar Faura is the Cinematographer I'm sure JW2 will look gorgeous. He did great with The Orphanage, The Impossible, and A Monster Calls.. what's also cool is how his style changed to the needs of the film. We're in for a treat.
