Jurassic Park III - What were they thinking?

They rewrote the full script weeks before shooting , that's why it's bad.

The original script of JP3:

There were two planes, one crashed on the island(with mostly high schoolers) and the other lands on the island to try and find the the group that crashed.

This part was so fucking stupid.
I'm still not entirely sure how the T-Rex managed to kill the entire crew on that ship without destroying the ship itself. Did they all happily walk under deck?

Anyway, despite it flaws, I think part 2 is still a lot better than part 3.

It's implied or assumed that raptors sneaked into the cargo bay of the ship and when it left port they ate the crew. They then jumped off the ship and back to the island after they ate the crew.

I know what to do. I've trained for this.

Compared to JPIII, I still think TLW is the better film. The compys, the long grass, and the trailer make up for the gymnast daughter. I think the directing and special effects are better as well. Plus John Williams. To me, the highs outweigh the lows.

Yeah, this was actually a scene that they wrote, but later cut. To my knowledge, it was never filmed.

Tea Leoni's screams were just...

But JPII had some issues, too.

ib1esLjBQqzRWJ.gif

Yup. JPII has writing that is as bad as JPIII, a stupid father-daughter subplot, Ian Malcolm is a completely different character, and Spielberg got carried away with CG (IMO). They also did a worse job of blending practicals with CG versus JP.

I love JP but one thing that has always bugged me is the T-Rex footstep sounds.

Why do we we hear *boom* 3 seconds *boom* 3 seconds *boom*

Like why would the T-Rex take two or three seconds to put one foot down in front of the other?

I've still never seen parts two and three. I take it that would be a huge mistake?

JP2 has some great moments, def watch it, but it also has some very stupid ones. JP3 is only a watch if you want to watch really dumb people do really dumb things in a jungle full of dinosaurs.

I thought the raptors were supposed to be on the ship, but that was cut. There's nothing in the movie itself, as-is, that suggests raptors got on board.

Yeah, I'm also thought I read that, even for a big dino, their weight distribution would be pretty even balanced and not enough to make the ground itself shake.

Still, great scene!

The most cringeworthy moment of JP3 definitely has to be the Kerbys yelling in the forest for their son. Because, you know, there's obviously not dinosaurs around.

The worst offender in Jurassic Park 3 was the misguided overuse of John Williams main theme music. It got nauseating really fast.

Jurassic Park 2 wasn't that great either, but it did have its moment. For me the inGen hunting party was really the highlight of that film.

I used two different words: Implied and assumed. Because some people might be able to see maybe the implied body parts left behind as a sign of raptor leftovers(As it's obviously seen before in JP1 but only once with the arm) or just people assume that raptors got onto the ship somehow even without any cues from the editing because it's an island full of carnivorous dinosaurs.

It's still the only thing that makes sense.

without a doubt one of the best scenes. the motorcycle guy riding through the legs of that sauropod was hype as fuck.

for all its faults, JPII still has a good deal of movie magic going for it.
III was the worst.

Movie just got worse and worse after this scene.

Worst part of 3 was that they made the T-Rex seem only a bit smaller compared to the Spinosaurus ... my 13 year old self was like "THAT'S INACCURATE!"

I guess for me, that's the main reason I prefer JPIII. Jurassic Park III had two really stupid parents risking everything in a rather ill-conceived plan to find their kid. And I bought that. Then there's the young paleontologist who just gets greedy.

Jurassic Park II has three of the four main characters all act like idiotic nitwits who first say "don't mess with the dinos, it's against the laws of nature" and then proceed to mess with the dinos and demonstrate a complete ignorance of how animals act. From people who are supposed to be animal experts. Sarah Harding and her eco-terrorist friend should have died along with the other jackasses on that island.

The former cases are a lot less cringe-worthy to me than the latter. if all your heroes are acting like idiots, I'm not going to enjoy the movie.

I liked the Pterodactyl stuff quite a bit, but yeah that movie is flawed. Guess for me it's a guilty pleasure, don't really hate the movie.

Is that the sequence where Sarah Harding has just finished escaping Stegosaurs because she got close to a fucking baby and they're stomping around the island as she says "Don't disturb anything"?

When a few moments later after finding out about InGens little party and sabotaging Rolands capture of the Rex, they go and take the baby Rex back to the RV because clearly the Rex won't be disturbed by their missing baby and try to hunt for whoever took it.

Still alot less cheesier than 3 by a mile though.

Sure this is silly as fuck, but overall JP2 is awesome. The tall grass and that amazing beat that plays, the cliff scene with the camper, the Tyrannosaurs constantly chasing the group, the Compies. Amazing soundtrack, beautiful vistas.
Look at this, it's super cool because you know it's coming from the very first minute. You know the velociraptors are in this movie, you're waiting 90 minutes and then this moment where they finally appear and take out like 75% of the entire team in 20 seconds.

I loved it.

Take out the gymnastics part, and my memories of this movie are almost as fond as of the first film. So much good in there.

Jeff Goldblum

Pete Postlethwaite

Game Trail

Campers

The Long Grass

I need to revisit them both. I feel like they are both uniquely bad.

Unrelated to anything but your avatar--I just saw Rush last week and was surprised by how good it was.

I probably just want to rewatch 3 again because I want to laugh at how bad of a movie it is. I like my bad movies though.

On Rush: I saw it in a theatre with two friends. Not at an amazing one but we were some of the few people there other than us. It was a fantastic watch for me. I might not have listed it as my top movie of 2013 but it definitely snuck its way there even if I don't outright say it is.

There is only one Jurassic Park movie, its the first. Nothing else exists LALALALALA

Other than that, the dino that killed T rex in the gif would prolly kick his ass IRL too

Did you guys like the Spinosaurus?

Nope it was shit. A new "big bad" has no mystique when it shows up 5 seconds after the plane crashes on the island to have a big videogame standoff with the "old model". Compare it's cartoony introduction (which includes it rolling the plane fuselage around) with the cinematic wonder of the T-Rex ripping the fence open in JP1.

I wasn't too into it until the crash--I feel like everything after that was great. Definitely a sleeper for me.

Did you guys like the Spinosaurus?

Not really. Johnston just seemed to want to try and make his mark, because BIGGER IS BETTER, apparently. I remember the JPIII "hype" being all "the spino is BIGGER than the T-Rex!!!".

Along with a Spinosaurus beating a Rex being completely unrealistic, the design they picked for it just felt...off.

Demoncarnotaur posted one of the original concepts for the look of the spino and it was much better. Don't know how they ended up with this goofy bro:

Did you guys like the Spinosaurus?

it was cool to see another large land predator besides the t rex, but he was just handled so poorly. no mystique. and the cell phone in the stomach bit was just lol worthy.

FACT: the dimetrodon is still the best sailed dinosaur ever.

okay, not technically a dinosaurs, but whatever.

I would have:

Ended JP2 with the T-rex being captured and put onto the ship.

JP3 - set 3-4 years after JP2. There is a Jurassic Zoo in the US now. In the past 3-4 years the company has added to the T-rex exhibit, raptors, and other smaller dinos. We see a smaller realization and bastardization of the original JP1 dream on US soil.

Then the raptors escape, you know they being intelligent and all. All hell breaks loose. And we get the urban JP monster movie.

Would have been fun.

Oh, I was into it from the start due to the editing and cinematography. I'm a film person so that blew me away. Story was pretty interesting but as you said became amazing once the wreck happened is when it became a film that is worth watching.

Related to the JP talk: I didn't like the Spino in any form. You can't take the mantle from the Rex. The Rex made its mark in the first film and is a trademark of the franchise. You can't have a JP film without a Rex.

And let's not forget the third run of stupidity, Sarah's blood-soaked shirt surprisingly attracts dinos.

There's just so many examples in that movie that completely ruin the character as being credible. Sure their kid is an idiot but she's not supposed to have a bunch of degrees.

First time I've ever seen people putting JP3 above 2 is in this thread :|, I mean neither get anywhere close to one but 3 was just so damn godawful and 2 at least had some good moments and some good casting. Even Sam Neill was awful in 3.

JP3 wasn't bad ... it was just completely unnecessary. at least The Lost World gave us a T-Rex in a city. what did the third movie deliver that we haven't seen before?

i like how they scrawled a roman numeral "3" at the end of the title even though the last one wasn't called JP2.. they were just like "fuck it, people are going to see it anyway"

Oh, lawd, I forgot about that. That's the scene where they're planning to get to the compound and they're sleeping before the Rex chase scene? I didn't like that scene. Was just filler for the next scene. Wasn't even that interesting of filler.
