The Justice Department has opened up a federal investigation into the deadly events in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday after a car plowed into a crowd of protestors and left one dead.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Saturday that a federal civil rights investigation into the incident had been opened.

“The violence and deaths in Charlottesville strike at the heart of American law and justice. When such actions arise from racial bigotry and hatred, they betray our core values and cannot be tolerated," Sessions said in a statement.

"I have talked with FBI Director Chris Wray, FBI agents on the scene, and law enforcement officials for the state of Virginia. The FBI has been supporting state and local authorities throughout the day. U.S. Attorney Rick Mountcastle has commenced a federal investigation and will have the full support of the Department of Justice. Justice will prevail.”

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia and the Richmond Field Office of the FBI also issued a statement confirming the investigation.

I'm trying to wrap my head around this statement. Did a different Sessions other than Jeff utter these words on behalf of the Justice Department? He says "racial bigotry and hatred betrays his core values"? Has he looked in a mirror lately? This must be lip service unless he's looking for a way to snuff out the ability to counter-protest against his fellow white supremacists so they don't get themselves run over where people with cameras can see it next time.

We investigated ourselves and found no evidence of any wrongdoing.
Oh, the "'ole rubber stamp, please carry on" treatment to pretend there's some semblance of law and order in the country. That's his angle then? Gotcha.

The word "crash" isn't sitting right with me here.

There wasn't a crash, there was a premeditated murder/several attempted murders.....

It's also domestic terrorism -- even Ted Cruz can see it -- but this is still a step in the right direction.

I'm getting a bit tired of this sort of pessimism. The evidence is undeniable. The driver is going straight to hell.

I don't give a fuck that you don't approve of my pessimism. Nazis feel entitled to march through America and I'm entitled to be salty about a government that encourages it.

It's that fact being the reason why Sessions is bothering to make this announcement. You can't even attempt to hand-wave away this shit or not take a firm stance in this instance without looking fundamentally irredeemable (so essentially do the opposite of our current President).

It's a layup for scoring some easy brownie points.

This is my impression. He's like "Damnit I perfected how to be a racist and carry out racist policies in the 21st century and now this idiot comes along trying to mess it up."

What about the investigation of torch wieldng, like a sword, Nazis and the black guy attacked in the parking ramp also by Nazis.

Besides the car hit man...how many Nazis were arrested this weekend. The werent peacefully protesting using torches as weapons.

The vehicle attack literally fits the definition of terrorism and they're acting like it's not. Fuck both the US government and media (who call these nazis "nationalists" instead of what they are: supremacists and terrorists).

I have never seen the government so slow in declaring a terrorist attack an act of terrorism.

You guys at the White House are sure taking your time.

Those fucks in the Trump Admin know if they call it as it is, they have 0% chance of winning in 2020 because white supremacists are the core of his base. He wont bite the only hand that feeds him and will likely bother showing up to his rallies. Meanwhile, no one else has a problem calling it what it is, given that there's no way to pretend that those people weren't anything else given that they're waving flags and all. Of course, it looks increasingly apparent that they wont make it to 2020 at the rate the investigations are ramping up.

Of course; in the US rule of law and white supremacy go hand in hand. Its why Sessions signaled they will side more on the pro-police side in brutality cases and how DOJ is fighting against affirmative action.

When these supremacists overplayed their hand and make a public mockery of the rule of law its easy to make a show of force in this case (cause its not like a fed investigation is needed when the guys been charged and there's so much evidence) to make sure the greater goal is served. This is a no brainer for the administration. It looks like they are being tough while they blatantly keep with the status quo. So in the future when the Fed is accused of racism they can point to this as an example of fairness even though the investigation won't go farther then what happened yesterday

Bingo bango. Easy win for them. "Look we're not racist, we took down that Nazi! Now excuse me while I sue a college for letting in too many ni-i mean african americans."
