K-pop band Oh My Girl detained at Los Angeles airport on suspicion of prostitution

It's like I need a very, very key and specific combination of words to get this precisely how you guys want it to be delivered: K-pop, for the most part, is an industry that goes to great lengths to sexually objectify women in their music videos. That is all I am saying.

How hard is that to absorb as anything but exactly what I said?
Hindsight is hindsight, but if you said exactly this in the other thread instead of what you actually said, I think it would have gone over better both there and here. You masked a good point with inflammatory accusations about the people you were talking to.

Sucks about these girls and customs. As a non-white, non-American person from a small country that does not require a visa to pass through the US, I was detained when connecting through LAX to come back home after a trip to Japan. Almost missed my flight while I had to wait in line and get all my docs checked. They're pretty strict. This only happens on the west coast for me, east coast gateways are very familiar with my country's visa situation.

North American Immigration is heavy at the best of times, if you don't have your answers to any potential questions straight especially if they found clothes in suitcases that were 'suggestive' then I'm not surprised they were held.

Even though I've bounced around a few forums by now, and have been a kpop 'fan' since 2012?

Any male dominated forum that has something for kpop (So /r/kpop and kpop-GAF) often times has a good half of people like I described. So what about me, who enjoys a group that generally has good music, and isn't snivelling to oppa like a submissive? Well, SOL, since apparently Korean hip hop isn't a thing with these fans, and indie acts are all but ignored unless they are IU or AKMU. And said group that I like (2NE1) doesn't conform to the disgusting beauty standards of Korea, and constantly gets shit on by the equivalent drive by shitposting of a 'drug dealer in the group'

K-Pop GAF has discussed both Korean hip hop and indie musicians numerous times. Most people are there specifically for K-Pop, so yes the thread tends to be dominated by pop artists. What did you expect?

How is this even a thing?

Ask for the name of their band and then google it. If it's a band, it's a band.

Did they just not bother to look up anything about the people they were questioning?

Because racist custom officials aren't great at telling Asian people apart?

And hey, look, more evidence about how anti-sex work laws hurt women. Shock.

Actually, they probably thought that they were sex slaves, not just prostitutes. Sex trafficking is a genuine problem in the U.S.

If you seen the LAX workers, they are like no-shits given attitude all the time.

They probably didn't care about looking too deeply into the identities because they are assuming they are fake.

Girl group A Pink recently confessed that they have not yet experienced their first kiss, so they think of their fans while dancing the key choreography moves for “Mr.Chu.”

This is one of my favorite posts on GAF in a long time. Even if you're not being serious, when coupled with your avatar, I have to believe you mean this and it makes me giddy.

You wish it were that simple. I like that some of you think you know the first thing about what I think/feel about this particular issue based on a couple of posts which give you no real context or insight into the real-world discussions I've had (you know, the ones that actually matter), or the opinions I've formed based on my own experiences in Korea (but like any of that matters to you, Peru. All that matters is that YOU lived in Korea. Fuck me for having some of my own perspective.)

You forget that I mentioned that I was once close with the EatYourKimichi crew who, as foreigners, are at the forefront of analyzing and digesting K-pop culture for the international fan base. The discussions I had with them about how this stuff gets made and the kind of people running the show was eye-opening, to say the least.

But I'll allow the K-pop pitchforks to try and peg me as "racist" or whatever. Peru says I wouldn't stand my ground for discussion when I pointed out a video that sexually objectifies the women by placing them in compromising positions that suggest they are orifices to be used.

Yes...because Peru just called me a fucking racist; him, and people like him in that thread, are unconscionably biased, hypocritical fuckwads who don't know the first thing about holding a level-headed discussion on issues like the sexual politics and objectification of women at play in the K-pop industry without jumping on their K-pop crusader horses in an attempt to lynch anyone who would dare bad mouth their precious girl groups.

Fuck that shit. That's why that thread was only worth a drive by post, and two of my shits.

Between the two of you, I'm more inclined to believe Peru. You really aren't open to any discussion and seem to be dismissing anyone's opinion that's not the same as yours. Calling K-pop gaf hypocritical fuckwads that have "Asian" fever shows this. I don't know much about K-pop but I do know there are aspects that are problematic (which, honestly is not just just Korean thing but that's another discussion) and I suspect that the majority of K-pop Gaf is aware of this. There is a conversation to be had but you're not exactly coming across in the best way.

Where were you when I needed you earlier?!

You're a much stronger and better man than I.

This shit is pervasive, and Kpop-GAF loves to sweep it under the rug and accuse people of being racist against their waifus.

You and Slayven may be the only people willing to look past the wool and see the sexual objectification that is barely above the surface.

slayven is cool tho

Hmm, all this yellow fever talk and how "it's just a preference, guys!" reminds me of that banned GAFer that was bragging about sleeping with his underage students in China. I wish I remembered his name.

That's probably the main reason he went there.

Im sorry you can't believe that these 20 years old women have never been kissed and do not know what sex is. Korean girls are not like the kind of women you often see in the west. They treasure their bodies.

This needs a member tag.

Unlike the rest of kpop-GAF who willingly hand wave the sexual obectification, disgusting beauty ideals and barely disguised waifuism?

I can't spit hot fire like this.

Dude is killing it. Owning fools in my stead.

But more OT:

I certainly don't believe for one second that these girls were being taken to LA to be "pimped out" or whatever.

I think a combination of the number of young girls all in a row, along with the miscommunication, and the coordinated outfits (whatever they may have been; doubtful they raised a red flag because they looked "prim and proper", though) added up to the misunderstanding.

There are many legitimate reasons why Asian women are worth your love, affection and your care. They are not beautiful dolls you can buy online. Here you can learn some basic facts about them.

Asian women are physically sexy and attractive.
Women, regardless of what ethnicity, all have an unique combination of physical features that make them attractive. With Asian women, many of them tend to have slimmer, smaller frames and more petite bodies. They usually have finer facial features too. So this combination can make Asian women stand out among others as it gives them a very feminine look.

Asian women tend to be more approachable.
Most beautiful Asian women are easier to approach than Western women. For example, if you are in Asia and simply give a girl a friendly smile and say something good to them in their languages, you will definitely get a smile back or a favorable reply. It is mostly because of their hospitality and culture. For example, Thailand is recognized as "The Land of Smiles" because people smile all the time. When you go to poor provinces in the Philippines, everyone, despite their hardships, will greet you with a friendly smile.
Asian women generally are more "shy" than Western women. "Shyness" means they are not used to the kissing and showing affection with their boyfriends in public. It is because the cultural backgrounds of their upbringing are different from in the West.

Asian women are virtuous and tolerant.
Most Asian women and girls are very courteous, feminine and tolerant, no matter whether they are from China, Thailand or the Philippines. It is unusual for them to quarrel with anyone over trivial things. In general, they can easily put down your anger whenever there is a misunderstanding as they are good in making peace.
Asian women are always willing to share their beloved's pressure and sorrow. If you are having difficulty or trouble in life and work, you can share it with her. If you care for each other, they are always ready to give you encouragement, comfort and support, and see it as an honor to be your significant other.

Asian women place a high value on relationships and have unconditional love for their family.
Asian women are close to their families and put great importance on their relationships with family members. If you date an Asian woman, you will be expected to be close with her family or even her extended family members, because many of them were educated by the traditional Asian values which put commitment and love toward their family.
So why is that the case? In many Asian countries, parents usually put more emphasis on teaching their kids family structures rather than on individuality. Even nowadays it is very often the case that women are responsible for households and take care of their family. It is because for Asians, it is important for them to put high values on relationships and unconditional love.

Asian women take pride in managing the household.
Most Asian women are excellent homemakers. A household run by an Asian woman is always going to be clean and organized. The meals will be prepared with care and love. They will take pride in keeping their living space clean and keeping their family well-fed. Also, they believe in working hard in order to provide a better future for their families.
Of course, we must remind that the above views are spoken in general terms. Are all Asian women passionately loyal and committed to their relationships? Of course not. But mostly, they are smart, self-sufficient, opinionated and strong. Yet, at the same time, they radiate pure femininity. Asian women always make men feel the way they are supposed to feel.

Must be satire because this is one of most creepiest shit I had read on Gaf, that's something I suppose.

Talk about taking obsession to unparalleled heights.

Peru is the true MVP. I wish I could express myself as well as him.

And lol at Silver Arrows striking again. One day you will get over the fact that there are people in the world that that doesn't have the same tastes that you have.

Chesskid's trolling keeps being top tier. Kind of annoing knowing that there is people that could take what he says seriously, though.

Going back on topic, the whole Oh my girl situation is a bit shady, not sure if the PR statement is telling the whole truth.

Mhm.

Fuck man, REALLY? Was that your only warped and twisted takeaway from what he was saying?

Do you not realize the guy actually likes a variety of genres, and a bit of K-pop has been thrown in for good measure. He literally just got finished saying as much to me in a PM.

You're so far off the mark, it's got me laughing and shaking my head in unison.

Is K-pop GAF this "hive mind" I hear some people talk about?

K-pop GAF hive mind? Huh? First time I actually see this. Anyway, Silver Arrows also uses kpop avatars, so I don't even know what's your point with that.

Silver Arrows has been shitting on the k-pop gaf community for no reason for a while. I still don't know what's the problem, since he/she checks the thread and has to be aware that he/she is pulling things from his/her ass. Like NOBODY there gave a single fuck about Park Bom's drug scandal. I mean, we don't give a fuck about any scandal in general... And there is discussion about hiphop and indie stuff frequently (although I have to lol at citing IU as indie).

I mean, we don't give a fuck about any scandal in general...

The only time any scandal is mentioned in that thread is when posters say that netcitizens are just making mountains out of molehills. And that's it.

There's no drama or heavily sexualized posts in the KPop thread minus the occasional troll. Hell, I'd say 97% of the posts have links to newly released songs or MVs. I honestly think it's one of the better K communities out there to find new music to listen to or artists to follow.

I don't get it. Like I realize I'm still a fairly new poster to that community but it seems normal to me /shrug

Yup. I'm a native-born American and I've had some serious questioning done when coming back to the country a few times. If they didn't have their info straight and it threw up a red flag or two, it's not surprising something like this could happen.

And as a longtime Jpop fan, I totally admit that, to someone not familiar with Asian pop, some of these groups could seem pretty questionable. It's not racism, it's cultural differences that you can't expect everyone to instantly understand.

It doesn't matter whatsoever. It's just a gag term for dudes who are thirsty for Asians. The world will spin on.

It's almost always used for guys, but I'm a girl and I totally say that I have yellow fever. I'm definitely not creepy about it like some of the guys I've met who also fall under that term, but I have no problem having that label on me.

K-Pop GAF also distanced itself from that dude (dokish?) who made that weird thread about the girls at his local pizza place as well if I'm not mistaken.

So you guys and gals are pretty good in my book!

Also who in K-Pop GAF is subpain on last.fm? I swear I've seen you at the top of every k-indie artists' shoutboxes since 2012 lmao

I don't know how you expect people to listen to you when you won't give them the time of day. Even if you assume they'll shut you down or go rabid, it's still unfair to those willing to actually listen. You came in the topic hot, not looking for discussion at all, and get mad when people call you out on it again and again? Like, how can you not see where people are coming from on this?

Let's say Peru is wrong and you are right. At this point, you've given less detail to an outsider like me, and therefore, guess who I'm going to trust? The person willing to have a discussion about the issue who isn't avoiding it with vitriol and assumptions.

Ding ding ding.

I actually thought that SolidChamp's points were solid, speaking as someone who knows nothing about KPop until I read more...and I saw that he had zero interest in discussing any of his points. Literal drive-bys.

lol, don't they know that K-Pop performers are entirely clueless in all matters of love, as their PR managers are so ready to assure us?
