Kendrick Lamar hype.... I don't get it.

I'm convinced that if Kendrick Lamar released an album at this point that consisted of him doing fart noises, rapping with his chipmunk voice and terrible accents, and added random long ass skits every other song with parts of the Martin Luther King Jr. "I have a dream" speech, people would try to over analyze things and say the album is a thematic masterpiece that empowers black people, black culture and/or some other bullshit.

Yes, insult the fans

I should start by saying that I think he can be a good rapper. Section 80? Good effort, although repetitive and sometimes sleep inducing. Good Kid? Great album, and that's it (it was hyped as the greatest album ever and a classic that would influence rap since it came out. I never saw anything like that).

Now you have his latest album " To Pimp A Butterfly" which got insane reviews, so more than ever I'm convinced that he has to be one of the most overrated artists I've ever seen. This album in particular, what the fuck? What does it make it so amazing and heads above the rest of great rap albums out there?

You would be fucking ashamed if somebody caught you bumping shit like "For Free?" "I" or "King Kunta". This shit is corny as a motherfucker, yet dumbass critics have convinced themselves that this is some kind of cohesive piece of art, and as a result, brainwashed a bunch of people into thinking Kendrick is some kind of Messiah and the only one in the rap game with something to say (sorry Macklemore).

I've listened to "To Pimp a Butterfly" 5 times, from beginning to end, uninterrupted, and I don't get it. Production is boring as fuck. The songs are random, the flows are meh at best, and Kendrick's voice will always be like hearing a chipmunk trying to rap. Not to mention that his albums sound so bloated, what with all those ridiculous long ass skits and interludes. He "interviewed" 2Pac at the end!! Cute. Will I ever hear it again? No.

There's some good stuff like The Blacker the Berry and Hood Politics (except for the annoying "boo boo"), but other than that, this album doesn't do anything for me. After someone posts the idontlikething.jpeg, can you explain what on Earth do people see on Kendrick that makes them go ga-ga for him? How can he get critics riding his dick so hard? Dude has a metacritic score of 96, but I can post a song from an album that has 88 that's better than anything on his latest album.

King Kunta is corny? ok. I'll stop reading there.

While he's not a bad rapper, there's a lot of truth in the OP. Plus the MBDTF cosign?

Just so it doesn't get overlooked.

Yeah, the album was OK. I think it was overrated as well. Took me less than a week before I was only coming back for 4-5 songs. It's still in rotation, just not very often.

Lmao

I agree, OP. I bought his last album after the insane hype and ended up only kind of liking a couple tracks. Really I just need to stop buying rap albums, they virtually always disappoint. The "album" is dead to me, better to just get the few singles you like.

Weird post considering TPAB is the most album-y album in terms of cohesive overall experience in a while.

It's like this...the reason why Kendrick is receiving so much support and critical acclaim is because there's no other rapper out there doing what he's doing went to comes down to rap on a mainstream appeal. He took elements from the origins of hip hop and fused them together to create TPAB. You don't have to force yourself to like the album, but don't shit on other people for enjoying the album. It comes off as frustration because you want to truly understand it but it's missing you. Hell I don't get the love for Yeezus and even say it's not my favorite album, but I'm not going to through Kanye under the bus because there's people out there that enjoy the album.

Bottom line, it's not a album for everybody, it's his album that HE wanted to do. No different from fans looking at 2pac strangely when he dropped Me Against the World or even Outkast when they dropped Atliens. Some people can never appreciate music on an artistic and personal level, but it is what it is.

My top 5 tracks:

  1. How Much A Dollar Cost
  2. Mortal Man
  3. The Blacker The Berry
  4. Hood Politics
  5. You Ain't Gotta Lie

Mine Would be

  1. Hood Politics
  2. The Blacker The Berry
  3. Mortal Man
  4. How Much a Dollar Cost.
  5. King Klunta

Theres a few songs hit or miss.. but overall I think its a great album.

I said it on the first sentence of the thread dawg. He is talented, but people make it sound lime he is above every single artist on earth. Wtf?

and people praise MDBTF like it came down from god instead of chastising it for being a sonically unsound mess and is the turd in kanyes otherwise GOAT discography (808's being the BEST).

Is there an inherent character flaw in people obsessed in 'getting' everything that's popular?

How come it's so easy for most people to not stay up at night contemplating why they don't like Justin Bieber, or American Idol, but a few others need to know, and even go as far as questioning the intelligence of everyone who does enjoy that same popular thing?

This post that you got here? BOO BOO

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, you also entered the album knowing about its rave reviews so expected something that would knock you off your feet. TPAB requires multiple listens.

Some of the folks trashing the production wouldn't survive in the early 90s when it was all jazz samples and funk loops.

Lyrically it's likely the best rap album of the year

Do not enjoy most of the production on here at all tho. Only songs where I'm really feeling the overall song is blacker the berry, hood politics, dollar cost and mortal man

The rest sounds unappealing due to the production and the gremlin voice he keeps doing imo

I get why it's so acclaimed though, but sadly theres too much unappealing sound in it for me

I like the album and can understand why people hype it up so much even if it just does not album for me to actually listen to. However, to say it's the lyrically the best rap album of the year ignores Tetsuo and Youth.

The problem with Tetsuo and Youth was the fact that it wasn't going no where. The album was good but it really felt like a Canibus album. There was no direction and some of the tracks were forgettable.

That being said it's one of the best albums to come out in 2015 but TPAB is a leap over Tetsuo and Youth.

Butterfly Pimps sucks imo. Plenty of other stuff coming out right now that's better.

Don't get me wrong, I respect Kendrick as an artist. He puts a lot of effort into how he crafts his albums and he's good lyrically. I just can't get with him on the mic. His flow, his goofy ass voice(s), everything about his delivery is so grating to me.

At the end of the day, music is still an audial experience. No amount of thoughtful lyrics can make up for that. He could be an all-time great ghostwriter, though.

I think the last album I actually liked from top to bottom was...

...damn, it has been a while...

Probably 'Lupe Fiasco's The Cool'.

I like about 1/3 of this album. Pretty good I think.

I don't think his music is that interesting. There's nothing wrong with it per se, but it's kind of boring.

I can get along with the production being not for everybody (heck I only revisit probably 4 songs off the album, the rest I skip) but random? nah.

If anything the album is too cohesive, it follows a distinct story and each song has it's place. I really could do without some of the hooks and skits but in context of the album they make sense and I'm okay with them. Still probably going to take my AOTY given how tightly it all comes together and what it tries to do.

It's a good album. For all the reasons you don't like TPAB are reasons critics and many others do like it. There might be something to be said about unnecessary superlatives and overindulgence in hype, but at the end of the day it's just opinions.

Yours just happens to be a minority opinion in this case.

Nah.

Good kid mad city is a classic album that 30 years from now people will be bumping still.

To pimp a butterfly will be forgotten at the end of the year. Fuck Kenny for dropping this shit bomb.
