What does "taking an L" mean? I've been listening to hip hop for 20 something years, live in NYC, and am outnumbered by black people where I work by about 10 to 1. Yet I've never heard the phrase.

And where can I find this evidence of Lil B giving Budden an L?

Budden lost just by engaging the Based God. Im not a fan of either, but Budden lost. You can't reason with an elemental force like that. Joey Badass lost too.

Taking a Loss.

I thinks its faux righteous indignation. Pap couldnt even articulate why you cant say that. Pap has some pretty deplorable lyrics in his catalogue of mixtapes and isnt really one to cast a stone imo. I dont think being a Muslim/one percenter gives him a right to be outraged if he isnt really even practicing.

yeah, you don't think that, but we both know how crazy some people who are clearly normally non-practicing religious folk get riled up over the smallest of things... it could be real outrage, he seemed pretty heated about it. was it that he couldn't explain why or just the thought of explaining it angered him and he wanted to keep things clean for the radio?

L for loss

It was the combo of the KONY claim, the muslim line, and Paps persecution complex since he gets zero spins.

Yea, I just find it funny since he had lines such as.

"Rhymimg scientologist, im a psychiatrist"

"I'll kill a christian with a cross just so God can watch"

Thats just hypocracy. But i dont expect any rational debate coming from the man. He can feel persecutes, im just gonna laugh at the butthurt and hypocricy if thats the case

You cant deny that the disproportionate response is funny considering the litany of offensive shit pap has in his mixtape catalogue.

This man said he eats poke. Naw son da gawd don't play dat shit

THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU DONT SAY

IN HIPHOP ANYTHING GOES

Kendrick laid a hot verse, but made it blow up by naming names of colleagues and a friendly challenge; because it's a competition. He also used a kurrupt line stating he's the king of New York. Internet goes crazy saying everyone named already lost and everyone not named doesn't matter. Rappers get blown up by fans asking for responses, some do, and then gaf decides they already took L's for responding because they didn't get Kendrick's point and battle rapping isn't part of competitive hip hop, I guess.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying some good verses and hoping some people have awaken from their slumber.

And Kendrick now not only has GKMC to live up to, but this verse as well for his "sophomore" effort.

GKMC is his second album breh. He already slayed the sophomore slump.

I'm enjoying some of the responses but ultimately they did miss the point. It's not a diss verse, yet the majority of the responses have been Kendrick disses. Kendrick challenged dudes to step their pen games up and honestly, the only one who did was Joel Ortiz. Obviously Lupe's song is lyrically impressive, but like most Lupe songs...it's a bad song. So he can take that L and pray over it, like white pussy.

Hence the quotations. Mainstream sees GKMC as his debut.

Ah true, true...

With his story now told, I look forward to seeing what he does next. I don't think he's going to release an album with a bunch of collabs, anthems, and club tracks - he doesn't seem interested. But I wonder if he tries to do another concept album, how can it match GKMC's theme.

I hope it's not a "disgruntled superstar struggling with fame" type album.

Not a Papoose fan but it's typical GAF to pull out one or two lines then say the whole response was garbage. It was better than most of ones that have come out so far.

SLR2 is better than anything Lupe has put out in the couple of albums.

some really low bars right here

...oh my god

Nas really isnt the interview type is he?

sadly i learned this years ago in too many issues of the source; belly showed he also can't act

And Charles Hamilton....

Gah-hop logic?

when did hamilton go i on k-dot? i have a hard time picturing him sayin shit without gettin rings slapped out of him

Budden is Nas without the respect and great albums.

nah, joey's salt makes him sound way older/grumpier to me, also his flow is not on that level. joey interviews better tho, has better taste in women too

Budden for the win.

i am hearing all kindsa shit for the first time ever up in here

The best part of Budden's response are the random shots at Meek, Trinidad James, Asap, Jay Elec and Joey Badass. Hilarious.

I never understood what really happened with that whole baby story or whatever.

someone explain to meh

I'm not sure if anyone is 100% on what happened. Just a dumb, disgusting, confusing topic.

It was a song lyric.

Joe Budden on the Usher Confessions remix said:
ust gotta be nice to the chick on the side
run game and pray that she abort that
when she talk about keeping it. one shot to the stomach she leaking it
but then she might want to get even with
so wear that thats just the lesson you take
then sit wifey down like look theres a confession i gotta make

Just to add to the people who have already explained it to you: it's not a black people new York or hip hop thing. It's a pretty common expression not tied to any of the above.

A huge Budden fan here, but he has much better work than that response. Or maybe I'm just in dislike of lines being used in a response rather than his "own" track. Even if you think it's great, it's still tied to Lamar, which is just bad in my opinion.

Only folks who win are people like Bangz who aren't even trying to lol

Papoose's response was straight garbage.

It was way worse than I expected. And I expected a poor response.

U wot m8?

It was a pretty good response - the cornea line was a bit wack though... I'm sure the eye line is a B. I. G line though or something.

Kendrick Lamar is not getting any guest verses for a while that's for sure.

I think this got blown out of proportion though.

You’ll never be a real West Coast artist like Eazy-E / You a fucking joke. We laughing at you like he-he-he /

You know nothing 'bout the trap / On your album cover you sat on another man's lap / They looked like The Supremes. You was Diana Ross / Only person in the flick with no shirt. Damn it, boss / Hope they didn't molest you. Did you have your pamper off?

Wow that verse u put up was actually quite bad surprised I didn't notice it before (listened to it on phone speakers).

Also got me thinking... Which NY rapper could take Lamar on... That hasn't retired or something along those lines. Actually come to think of it - what NY rappers are there? I know more South rappers then NY...

I fuck with Kendrick. I had his album on repeat for like two weeks after it dropped. If he was from New York then he'd be my favorite new school guy from New York so fuck it crown him. The New York landscape (and the rap landscape in general) has been stagnant for the past 10 years so I'm glad he pointed that shit out. But like Buddens said, out rapping ASAP doesn't mean anything...

And if I have to be honest Drake is more talented than Kendrick. I like to make fun of Drake as much as the next guy but he's outdone Kendrick on everything they've been on together that I've heard. And his last album was a little better than GKMC too. But back when rap mattered both these guys would just be pretty good not on top of the game. Pretty sad state of affairs .

And damn, we finally get some legit new talent out of the west for the first time in damn near 20 years and we have Cali guys in hear puffing up their chest like east/west beef is still a thing. lol I see you Laker age.

The West Coast has had the Game, FaShawn, Odd Future, yadda, yadda.

As far as Kendrick goes, he's had two great albums, Section 80 and GKMC. I don't really care about this talent or potential nonsense. But I'd say based off of that, he's probably, artistically and discography speaking, better than Drake. I'd say Drake is more versatile and been featured on more hits, so he's probably the more relevant of the two. And I didn't mess with either of Drake's first 2 YM LPs for very long. GKMC was being bumped in my car non-stopped.

I was born and raised in New York. I wasn't offended by what Kendrick said. I think, if anything, New York rappers should use it as motivation. Honestly, since 2001 or 2002, the City hasn't really had a major impact on hip-hop thanks to 50 Cent, the South and Texas movement. They've just been trend followers. Besides Jay-Z and a lesser extent Nas, there hasn't really been a relevant rapper from the City. There isn't a "New York" sound, nor has there been an artist who came out of nowhere and took over the game. Not to say there aren't talented cats from there like Joey Bad@$$, Skyzoo, Action Bronson, etc.

I'll buy that Drake got him on Fuckin Problems, but Kendrick won on Poetic Justice and Kendrick has the best verse on Drake's whole album.

I agree that Drake is probably a more versatile artist and he has many more quotables (You can't go ten minutes without someone reciting a Drake line), but Kendrick has more technical ability (flow, rhyme schemes, etc..)
