Killzone: Shadow Fall |OT| Nothing Stops This Rain

Ok, so all this time I've defended the game and absolutely enjoyed it, but this one particular level is just….awful. As in, some of the worst designed stuff I've ever played in a shooter. Maybe I'm just being stupid, but up until this point I've actually found the game pretty manageable, maybe even easy, but this level, even on Normal difficulty is just….how…

It's the end type segment where wave after wave of enemy come after you. We're talking dozens of chain gun guys, shield enemies, ATATs, everything. Like out of no where an army just decided to show up. I have some sort of spark blast rocket launcher, but even that isn't enough. I'll kill every living thing alive, but as soon as their drop ship comes, all my men etc die, I follow shortly after.

There is literally no way one man can take on 20+ guys in a tiny area with this kind of enemy AI, along with 3-4 ATAT hovering above you. Just seems impossible, despite my best efforts.

Anyone have any advice?

Such a damn shame this is one of the end levels, and worse still even in the game at all. Guerrilla Games should know, ending a game on such a terrible note really leaves a sour taste in gamers mouths. You never end on such a bad note. Else people who have otherwise loved it, very quickly change their tune. I still feel this is a competent shooter with some great ideas and gameplay, but this one level…

Chapter 7? It's braindead easy. Put up a shield, fire the voltage through it, and only move to grab ammo for the voltage. You won't even take damage.

It's honestly really easy up until the drop ship. Then I have those ATAT's above me to worry about, plus the guys with shield, plus the chain gun guys, plus the shield armour guys. Even my OWL's shield doesn't seem to be enough to withstand it all.

Once the drop ship arrives, get on the turret on the ship behind you and take out the sentry bots. The even patched the turret section to make it easier. It'll end once all the bots are down.

It's pretty late now but maybe tomorrow I'll make a video for how to get through the end of Chapter 7 like I did for 2. Did anyone watch the other video? Was it helpful?

Turret section? There's a turret? :S

Reason nano shield is useless is because when the enemies flank you, should you die, the OWL can't revive you because it's "recharging". That's why it's hard otherwise it wouldn't be so bad.

But if it does take a specially placed turret to beat the level I'll be bitterly disappointed. The rest of the game gives you tonnes of ways to deal with combat scenario's, this should be no different.

The turret is only there once the ship you're leaving in arrives. Kellan outright says he's going to go and use it.

Im not up to that part but there have been a couple things which I have taken me a few deaths to work out. The first one was in Chapter 1 when I didnt realise I had to blow up the crashed plane. The next one was in Chapter 4 when you have to stop the trains, I couldnt work out how to get into the train for about half an hour!

I am not used to FPS objectives and maybe I just don't get how to follow the instructions in FPSs these days, seeing I only really play sports games and driving games these days.

Was an absolute cake walk once I got on the turret.

But honestly, where the hell did it come from and why couldn't or didn't they use it before? Also, it's almost impossible to hear him mention it over the gunfire. All he says is…

"I'm covering the cannon to take care of the Hellgast" or something similar. That's it. Wtf. At least say something like, "there's an armoured turrent behind you that's just activated, get on in Marshall, it's the only way we'll be able to take them on".

Ridiculous.

It's on the ship that was being lowered as you fought the first wave of Helghast. It arrives just as the dropship shows up.

I see. They should have made it far clearer. Not properly explained and almost impossible to pick out over all the gun fire. I think I'd only really properly hear it if I just happened to not be shooting or getting shot at the time.

On a side note, they made the free fall level much more fun now. You can gain more height so you actually glide over certain buildings that would otherwise constantly get in the way. They may have made it too easy now, but I suppose it was to soften the blow from the previous level lol. Which funnily enough also happens to be quite easy once you get on the turret.

How do you open the airlock on chapter 7, not seeing it is it a bug?

Yes it is. After it was patched to I think 1.5 I couldn't get in the cargo door either on my hard play through.

Unfortunately, I had to exit the game and it started that level without a hitch. I do realize that after making it across that section only for the bay door not to open really suked. It is hard enough just to navigate that area only to be denied entry.

Yeah, it's actually fun now. I only died once on it because I sneezed and hit the stick in the wrong direction. Unfortunately the rest of chapter 8 still sucks. I like the rest of the game more than most, but that chapter blows.

It got way too repetitive, like each area was the same thing over and over but tougher pretty much.

Yeah. I thought the first segment was cool but it just repeated over and over. Pretty but boring.

My breakdown of the chapters:
1 - 5 minute movement tutorial, barely worth mentioning
2 through 6 - Some of my favorite missions from any FPS of the past few years
7 - Eh
8 - NOPE
9 - Eh

Ending spoilers:
I really liked the final mission and the actual ending as well.

Overall the game is pretty good but the launch rush clearly shows later on.

They honestly should have finished, play tested and polished the beginning and end missions the most. Seems like instead the end of the game got less attention and play testing, which is a shame.

They always get so close to getting there, but always just miss out. GG honestly need more talent, and not in graphics, tech etc, but someone like Amy Hemming or Neil Druckmann who are particular about narrative and characters and can really make gamers care a heck of a lot more for them. As well as someone who can see gameplay segments through with more vigour and critique. I remember when watching The Last of Us documentary, they spent time creating, but then ultimately cutting out or tweaking so many levels, cut scenes and content because they didn't feel it was good enough. A true quality designer knows when to leave certain things out even if they have spent tonnes of money, time and resources on them.

I reckon after a few more patches, this game will end up being the game it should have released as. Just needed a bit more play testing and tweaking, otherwise there are some fantastic ideas, designs and tactical gameplay mechanics explored here.

Did that section last night and would have made it first time through if I realised you needed to get on the turret. Figured it out on the second go though. Just one of several times when the game could be a lot clearer about what's going on.

I blame my surround sound. Dat bass though.

But I wouldn't turn turn the volume down. The sounds of the gunfire and weapons is a huge part of the Killzone franchises allure. Gun porn and audiovisual bliss.

I can relate.. I was complaining about the same section a page or two back.. but yeah, there is a manable turret behind you (If you are on the catwalk with the gun rack) but it doesn't become accessible until the dropship arrives.

Edit: Ah, see you found it.

GG needs time. KZ2 was so good because they took nearly 4 years to make it. KZ3 was made in less than 2 years and SF had to make the launch deadline. SF has several missions that are a fantastic base to build off of for future installments but they need to take their time. With the engine up and running and several great missions to build on the next game could be great if they really focus on it and don't rush into things. I think they also should have edited down SF a bit. If the last few missions were shorter I think there would be fewer complaints. I'm all for 12+ hour SP modes but sometimes some restraint is needed.

To be fair….for a 2 year time frame, this game is an insane achievement. They actually gave us a solid, varied, 10+ hour SP campaign (far more than can be said for the majority of military shooters these days) as well as a really engrossing, multi layered, map variety laden multiplayer. Couple that with the insane tech, graphics, art, open level design etc, and it's hard for me not to be really impressed.

Oh yeah, I agree. I just think they tried to add a bit too much new and out of their comfort zone for a launch game.

It's not that fun though. At least to me. Everything looks great and has that new gen smell, but I find myself pushing through sections out of pure will. Extremely disappointed in that considering I remember having a lot of fun fighting in killzone 2.

Man, I was really enjoying this game until 'Last Stand' in chapter 7. I just can't get past it. I knocked the difficulty down to easy and still no dice. After an hour or so of retrying I think in about ready to give up on the game.

It really doesn't help that the electric rocket launcher thing has decided it doesn't want to fire anymore. I don't know if it's glitched or something but it used to fire three zaps of electricity and now it's just a useless eyepiece.

Really bummed out by this difficulty spike.

Edit: bitching on GAF worked. Passed it on the next attempt.

Just finished KZ: Shadow Fall. I'm entirely new to the series, and I have a PS3. Is it worth picking up the KZ Trilogy Collection?

I enjoyed Shadow Fall,
I didn't really enjoy the heavy handedness about how both sides are entirely bent on war, but I guess it's a story driver.
Am I going to hate playing through the other games on ps3? I guess I could just pick up the Vita game.

ElTorro

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Chapter 7? It's braindead easy. Put up a shield, fire the voltage through it, and only move to grab ammo for the voltage. You won't even take damage.

That's what I did, too, and I died only one time because I missed one dude shooting at me from the side while I manned the ship's cannon.

The turret is only there once the ship you're leaving in arrives. Kellan outright says he's going to go and use it.

I also tend to miss such hints, especially when the battle's noise is drowning everything else.

The first time I did that section, I didn't even see the ship being brought closer due to the darkness disguising it and the combat drawing my attention to the lower ground rather than the ceiling.

Everyone a guy name Trackboss made a Full Fledged Warzone, that's the name of the room. Join it and get it on the front page by supporting so we can have that classic Killzone 2 feel back!

In what way has he recreated classic Warzone?

Part of me just hopes, that if there is another Killzone, that Guerrilla finally takes the hint that people are only interested in the Helghast and desperately want to play as them. They took small strides towards that with Shadow Fall, but I'd really have preferred to just play as a Helghan.

However, if they haven't taken the hint by now, I doubt they ever will. They had the PERFECT opportunity to do just that with Shadow Fall too, given the time jump.

I won't speak for anyone per say, but I really don't see any consensus on this, or why there are people that want to play as the Helghast, even with SF fleshing out both sides it;s hard to say that the Helghast are more interesting as there are a far fewer layers to their culture or situation. There a lot more story potential, realistically speaking, using the the VSA, a group with a far more malleable and well developed society to draw on. It would take an A class writer like the kind at Naughty Dog to make the 2-dimensional Helghast interesting to play as. I mean maybe a campaign dealing from overthrowing the Helghast hierarchy, but that's not what people seem to want. They want to play as the Helghast killing the VSA so they can then commit their own, authority structure sanctioned, genocides while shooting any civilians who speak out.

And I'd rather not play as the race that carelessly murders their own citizens, using the VSA as an excuse to do so because of 'sanctions' when the VSA has every reason to prevent them from militarizing. It really shows that time hasn't changed the Helghast much at all, they're still the North Korea of space civilizations.

Just completed it.

The last episode showed potential brilliance and
really reminded me of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark with the stealthy nature of the mission.
It was short and sweet but once again it was let down by awful mission-markers. For the final part I had absolutely no idea where to go, and it was just a care of fail, fail, fail, "Oh FFS you go there then" type gameplay. It's just bad level design as nothing flows smoothly and there is zero room for error when playing the game. It actually reminded me of PDZ, but they fixed their shit level design with markers on the ground. At times Shadow Fall was so bad it needed something like this. A random point in the distance with 90% of routes leading to dead ends is not only bad design, its very frustrating. It shouldn't be like that.

Overall I was disappointed with the Campaign mode.

Firstly, the good stuff:

- Outstanding presentation. From the 10-second load to main menu to the unbelievably tasty graphics and sound, its a real stunner in that department. Framerate is excellent throughout, with way more moments of 60fps than I was expecting. A very very beautiful game that really shows off the hardware.

- Using the OWL is cool, and adds a bit more variety to the gameplay, giving you a few options on how to tackle a room of enemies

- A good number of the chapters were very exciting to play, with excellent battles with enemies, really good pacing and some great set-pieces. These sections were excellent to play through and would do them again.

- Controls and gun-play is excellent. I like the much lighter feeling gameplay here but you still have a good feeling of weighty weapons.

- I still love the game world. There is a lot of awesome art design here with the environments and city design etc. I've always liked the Killzone world and this just adds to it. I would like them to revisit this again in the future. However...

Secondly, my issues with it:

- The story was poor with everything just all over the place, none of the connecting levels made any sense and you'd jump from space to city to zero-gravity with no explanation, you were just expected to ride along with it. Games have come a very long way with story telling and there is no excuse for a AAA budget game like Killzone to have a worthless story.

- Level design was also weak I found it very confusing at times and got constantly lost, with the way I thought was the right way leading to another dead end. Levels should flow naturally. The levels are kinda like Half Life 2, where they feel open world but are not, but I never ever got stuck or lost in HL2, you were just whisked along without knowing it, but at times thinking you could go anywhere.

- Game difficulty. It felt overly hard to me, and your character and weapons felt weak in comparison to the enemy. Spider bots should not take nearly 10 rounds to kill, it's crazy. I think some balancing is required here because Normal felt too hard to me.

- Check Points. Some times these were really well placed, but at others you could be sent back seemingly miles which is rather inconsistent.

- Voice acting and character models. Neither of these were up to much, with the worst offender being the character faces. It's so noticeable when in an otherwise stunning looking game.

- Some downer chapters. I didn't really mind the zero gravity stuff, but the flying through the buildings can die in a fire, as can the free-fall sequence. I wish there was an option to skip these entirely, I don't want to play anything like that.

- Stop doing boss fights. You aren't any good at them.

Anyway, on to multiplayer...

So yesterday I was able to redeem my code for the Shadow Pack DLC. Today I was looking out for the content, but I can't seem to find it. It's not in my library, and apparently the skins you get don't show up as free in the store, if I search them.

Now I took a look in my download list in the browser and found this:

Is this known? Any way to fix it?
N/A and doesn't even say which platform.

Edit: Tried to enter the code again but it says "voucher already used".

Anyone? :/

Just finished off the SP. I really enjoyed it. I know everyone has their own opinions and many people were disappointed with it... but damn - I had a really good time with it. I took it nice and slow... started a few other games before finishing it so maybe I didn't get burnt out on it like some others did. I've read many people say that it dragged on but that wasn't an issue for me.

I thought it was great for a launch title. Good work GG.

You are full of bullshit. You never played this game right? This scene isn't playable, in-engine but not playable... so what? You talk about a downgrade, but there's not, the game is more astonishing in real than any reveal vids you have seen.

Yes, maybe i'm saying some bullshits myself, lol. Fact is, this scene isn't very important, gameplay just after is even more mindblowing with the real-time reflections everywhere. But, it's always like that when someone attracts you in his shit.

sony defense force on gaf is even worse than I expected. They cleary downgrade the big explosion, but not, guys, just "cosmetic changes".
You guys are terrible, really.

I think it might be pre-rendered, I'd have to check again. I think there's some pretty distinct compression artifacting in that scene.

But either way, claiming that it's a "downgrade" is absurd. it's a color palette change.
