Kim Wu revealed for Killer Instinct Season 3

Not just for KI here, but I've always felt it was weird for people to seem to want video game characters they play as to be to their standards of physical attraction...sometimes to the point where they need to be practically datable, fuckable, marriage-capable or something. I mean, even the cool characters in games, either due to style or proportions and design, are generally the usual spin on impossible standards of beauty or current trends of style and all tend to age poorly because of that. I mean, there's no real artistic value there outside of fashion model and generic demographic safety there. I dunno, this thread just seems another pretty strong example of what I think is fairly homogenous view on standards of video game beauty even though they're all basically animated action figures no matter how you slice it. Video games still seem to be locked into a narrow range of looks, like all mainstream Hollywood film seems to be.

I'm surprised that this post hasn't been addressed more. There is some real discussion to be had on this topic. Her face doesn't look like it isn't detailed or textured, it just doesn't fit with the expectations we have of how these characters are supposed to look. Just look at all of the posts saying her face is "unfortunate" or "ugly". It looks like a real face to me, not a 'Hollywood Normal' face, but a face I'd see on the street.

OG Kim looked african american. Just like Orchid did.

Sucks they seem intent on "fixing" all of them.

I think most complaints about the face are in regards to current lighting and textures, not that it is or isn't physically attractive. At least I hope they are.

Whenever you have posts about the eyes being too close together, though, it makes you start to question things a little bit, unfortunately.

Traditional Chinese Characters in the background. Hm.

It is unfortunate. I'm all for more "average joe" style characters showing up in games. Make them easier to relate to. I was thinking she may even be mixed race which would be cool.

I don't understand the complaints either. Model looks OK.

Part of the toxic culture that the stereotypical gamers identify. Quite sad. What were the complainers expecting? They complain, but they don't provide a picture for reference. That's equivalent to doing nothing.

Not really, back in renaissance people were all about making 'heroic' characters appear attractive. It's just human nature.

This is an interesting point. At first, I thought it could use some texture or detail work, but after thinking about it in this light, I'm ok with it.

A pretty tasteful design in my opinion, I honestly had no idea that she was considered "ugly" until I read this thread - but then again no "human" is perfect either. Are people just wanting the generic unachievable anime look for all the female characters in KI?

The way people have been portrayed has varied drastically depending on the time period and art movement. There are hundreds of famous paintings of people that would seem fairly plain in the modern film age.

Yes. Look at all the fawning over the females in SF5. All the females faces look like they're built off the same base model.

I think her features look good. Some normals need to be smoothed out or tweaked (around the nose) or the lighting adjusted but structurally its good. Especially that side shot.

It is a problem in the industry: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/inside-out/disney-pixar-characters-same-face/

That's enough to get me to play the copy of KI I bought 6 months ago.

One of the dopest looking characters. So much variety in her moveset.

I think you would have to account for the different views on beauty. Of course there were art movements that showed plainness but that was kind of the point of those art movements to try and depict a more realistic portrayal as oppose to the popular art of beautiful figures.

Not really. Like, one of the most famous paintings of the time period you referenced is the Mona Lisa after all.

In all fairness to Kim, Orchid is kinda funny looking in the face too in Season 1.

Only Sadira and Maya are the "traditionally attractive" female characters.

How in the world does "I have some issues with her face/model/etc." turn into "I want SUPER ANIME/HOTNESS"? People really need to stop putting words in other people's mouths

"We went more believably real to her Chinese/Korean heritage"

Sounds about right

Remember when Chun-Li looked like she had some sort of distinct look to her face in SFV's early stages , then now she looks anime as fuck

I remember there being a change but I don't recall it being particularly large. Got a side by side photo comparison?

She was considered beautiful at the time, just like how Cleopatra was considered beautiful yet would be plain by today's terms.

Either way the point was not that every single moment we worship beauty, but the focus on beauty is something that video games/hollywood or any modern media did not create.

It's natural a lot of people want something that appeals to them, that is completely okay. People see normal every day, if you look at people creating avatars in MMOs, or other games they always make what they want to look at (or making it goofy or themed after something they like or find funny) and dress into something they find aesthetically pleasing.

And about her face, it does look weird. They obviously are going to make an asian face, but to be honest, a lot of western developers seem to have a hard time making a good one (not even necessarily pretty, just one that wouldn't seem off. But these games normally have weird faces for everyone anyways), such as Bioware and Bethesda, and I say this as an asian. On the flip side people do create a lot of eastern games of making things too pretty or anime, which honestly you would expect if you see what kind of famous actors, models, and singers look like over there. When someone said budget Kasumi for Kim Wu, I actually agree with them because it reminded me of some fan art of Kasumi I remember seeing back in the day.

Those animations look kind of static. She's just okay overall. Nothing special. It looks like this game has gotten a lot of characters since I first heard about it.
