Can an Android person tell me why I'd want to Cyanogen my Fire (or other root/jailbreak) and what benefits I'd get. Also what negatives would there be to the existing Amazon/Fire infrastructure use?

Restriction: lose access to Amazon prime video service ( the only one I am aware of).

Gain: system level control, e.g. a foreign language keyboard, or a network drive.

If this means what I think it means, then you can just download the Dropbox APK (directly from Dropbox website!) and sideload it. Works very well, IMO.

I should be more specific, it's so-called cifs, basically mapping shared Windows folder on your LAN. Great for watching videos or pictures on your home network. Of course, Dropbox is very good.

I just received one as a gift, and while I like it as a $200 tab, the web browser is apparently throwing a temper tantrum like a 5 year old.

It loaded web pages fine at first, then it suddenly couldn't load them at all, and now it can load them, but they don't actually display. To rub it in like a passive aggressive jerk, the carousel still displays a thumbnail of the loaded page that the browser refused to show me!

Trying clearing the cache, restarting the router, checking all setting, etc. Utterly baffled.

Edit: I figured it out, it involved clearing data and cache from the applications menu.

Between my non-tech friends and fam getting iPads, iPhones and Kindle Fires, I'll be busy for the next month playing setup boy!

Merry Christmas, Kindle people!

Got one of these for my wife for Christmas. Several thoughts:

1. Definite learning curve for n00bs. She's more or less techless-minded, but she's also young and learns quickly.

2. The browser is fine unless you're trying to click links. Then it's 50/50 whether or not it will actually register a tap or if you have to try several times. We have a bunch of problems doing a basic google search and clicking the first link.

3. Wi-Fi reception was noticeably slower than my iphone, but not damning.

4. It is heavy. I don't know what to compare it to, it's just heavier than you'd expect and gets heavier the longer you hold it. Feels like a hardback book without the big hard covers to stand it while you read.

5. And she fucking loves it. I got a bunch of books for her and have a couple movies on standby when she wants to watch them, and she's in love. Combine this with a decent facebook experience and she's extremely happy.

6. We played Angry Birds together for an hour or so, that's when we noticed the weird inability to turn the volume up/down inside an app. But it's not incredibly difficult once you figure it out.

7. The carousel thing is going to get pretty loaded down unless there's a way to manage it.

8. The reader is fine. I would tinker with the default fonts and brightness, but that's my thing. She liked it as-is.

8. Overall: exactly what my wife wanted/needed at a perfect price point. I can see why some people would be disappointed, but they're probably expecting something quite robust. Seems to me like this is an amazon delivery device, with a big fat screen, sound, and color.

I got one for Christmas.

I enjoy it so far :) as a sidenote the mobile GAF website looks really good on it :)

I picked up a few games, Madden 12, Asphalt 6 and the Gameloft Uncharted clone.

All play very well :)

Posting from mine, hehe.

Got it yesterday from my mom and thought - wow this is kind of expensive for something I don't exactly know what I'll use it for.

This morning I thought DUH MANGA! Gonna read the shit out of some Hajime no Ippo on this, works well.

Downloaded an app so I can listen to RadioSega.net's stream...

Think I'll nab that madden game for a buck and see how functional it is.

I got one of these for christmas and have no clue what to do with it. I feel like a spoiled douchebag, but I'm thinking of returning it. I'm trying to justify keeping it but for what? Maybe as an e-reader (I'd prefer a real book, but if it's cheaper I'll get used to it)? I'm having trouble thinking of a time when I'll be away from computers but in a situation where a tablet would be practical.

I guess it will be nice for travelling (not that I do much of that). I'll try rooting it to see what it's like without the amazon b.s., but I need to buy a cable and I won't be able to do that until January most likely :/.

Like I said, I feel like an ass for wanting to return it, especially since it's the most expensive christmas gift I've ever received. There's gotta be SOMETHING (aside from reading) that this works better than a PC for, right?

Got one for Christmas as well. Already having some stock(media) in Amazon makes it really nice!

For the price I think it does a lot, and it is nice to hold, but I am having a hard time trying to justify it. I already have an iPad2, iPhone4, and a PC..

Madden isn't too bad. Kinda odd at first.

Wife loves Where's My Water. It's very much like Angry Birds in both goals and addictiveness. Fun time.

Anybody have a quality alarm clock on it?

Yeah, Where's My Water works pretty well.

I also notice they have the Feedly app, which isn't too bad.

Wish Flipboard was on here...or am I just not seeing it in the Market?

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Long story, short:

I pre-ordered one of these, and had it shipped out via one-day shipping on release. It was gonna be a gift for myself, on someone else's dime, but that didn't work out. Now I need to return it.

Two questions:

1) How long do I have to return it? I know it's normally 30 days, but I believe Amazon has extended holiday returns - I just can't find the details.

2) Can I open it and play with it while I have it? Maybe I'll fall in love with it, I just doubt it. But is there any reason to not at least give it a shot?

Thanks!

Contact Amazon CS (chat, email, etc.) They are very good. And of course you can play with it before return it!

Nothing else. Well there's scribbling and drawing but few of the new generation of mobile tablets support that functionality properly. Tablets really are a luxury devices at the moment.

What.. I need to remove the item from the carousel after every time I open it? I can't just put it on "never put this in carousel"? It goes without saying that if I delete it once, I'll probably never want it there.

Better than nothing, but still.

Got one of these for Christmas and the form factor really works for me. The speaker placement leaves something to be desired and I wish it had a microphone for voice-to-text, but for $200 it's pretty nice.

I wish there was a way to organize my wish lists on this thing. I don't see an option to put items in user-defined lists; everything goes to the default list. Also, why doesn't the appstore in the Amazon app show the daily freebie?

doesn't that only work with a camera?

Which one, Flipboard? No, it and Feedly are both news/reader aggregate apps.

ereader
Comic reader
Internet Browser
Movies
Mobile games
Interactive apps/magazines

is what I'm primarily using tablets for. I find it much more comfortable to lounge on the couch or outside or in bed and watch movies/get online with a tablet than with a laptop. i also like checking out apps built for touchscreen tablets. Overall for media consumption it's much better than a laptop imo.

Its great for reading comics, I am not a huge comic reader but reading a few of the free ones and its great.

Also if I want to do light web browsing I can do it faster with my Fire than I can with other devices

Reading comics is one thing I hadn't anticipated using it for, but I've been plowing through The Walking Dead (finished the 5th collection last night). I've been reading a bunch more since buying the Fire (comics and books), so I'm loving it.

Mobileapps Gaf works better on Kindle Fire than any other device I've tried.

A glass trophy or a sturdy paperweight.

To get my mp4s to play, I have to use the Gallery app. Annoying that they do not show up in the Video section. Even worse is that the Gallery plays all movies at the same resolution regardless of whether the source is widescreen or full screen.

So, I'm able to connect to internet with my fire, but I can't connect to the app store or anything app related, just tells me no network available. I have it updated to 6.2.1, if anyone has any idea why it isnt working.

RSTEIN

Comics, serious business!
Got one unexpectedly from my mother in law. As an iPad 2 user, I feel the fire has a much better form factor for on the go use. Much easier to take it on the subway for the morning commute than the iPad.

Everything else is vastly inferior (as one would expect). Web browsing is loooooool worthy.

Figured I'll ask here if anyone knows..

What I basically want is an offline Wikipedia app that will let me save articles directly to Evernote. Does anyone know anything like that?

I had the same issue when I first received my Kindle Fire. I have a Netgear wireless router, and I ended up doing a hard reboot on the router, and did a factory reset on my Kindle Fire. I have not had any issues since.

Also, do an install of 6.2.1 if you haven't already done so. Fixes some wifi issues people were having w/ certain wireless router models.

As for CyMod7, a buddy of mine put it on his Kindle Fire. Its pretty cool, though you lose Amazon's video service if you go that route. Reverting back to the Kindle Fire OS is a simple process of basically removing the software for CyMod7, and reloading the latest Kindle Fire version.

I'm waiting to see what CyMod9 offers first.
