So I'm seriously considering getting one of these. I'm doing a bit of travelling here in the near future and would like something a bit more convenient for reading, watching movies and listening to music than hauling out my laptop every time I get bored on the plane or in the car.
I really don't think a $600 tablet is called for here. I just need something for portable media other than using my cell the whole time. I'm pretty sure a Kindle Fire would work. Does anyone see any problems with my thinking/logic here? Is this a better product for my purposes than a low-end tablet, or the $250 Nook? (CNet reviews didn't really help me at all here, haha.)
I found the both the video quality and performance of the two main streaming apps I used (Netflix and Amazon) to be disappointing. I knew the resolution would be lower, but it bothered me more than I thought it would. And then I'd get weird things like audio syncing issues from time to time. I also found the sound quality kind of poor. Tried two different pairs of headphones I have and for video the sound never was very good. The music I listened to seem to be an improvement though.
Amazon Music player integration is great and works very very well.
Navigation is pretty simple and straightforward - which is great. The 'carousel' is just awkward, though at least they updated it to where you could actually remove things from it, so that's a plus. But even then it just seems...obtrusive. I don't know. Hard to explain.
Comics are pretty great, though to be honest I found myself wondering how much better the 10" screen would be once I really got into them. Still far from a dealbreaker though, I bought about two or three graphic novels through Amazon as well and the process is as smooth as a Kindle should be.
Battery life is so-so. Even just reading seems to give it a pretty good workout. I understand why, but still a little jarring.
App Store (or at least Amazon's layout for the Amazon App Store) sucked badly. I know there were some good apps in there (usually phone apps, but still) but I'd have to search for them because Amazon sure as hell didn't want you to find them. Just terrible implementation for finding and suggesting apps.
Now, keep in mind, lots of this could get addressed by updates possibly, so there's that. And really, if you want to stay at this price point you don't have a lot of options. I wish the 250-300 ICS tablets were actually available because I feel those would probably be the best options at that price. As it is, I'd say go to a Barnes and Noble and a Best Buy or something and really play around with a Nook Tablet and Fire. One of those will have to be your best option right now.
Personally, I was trying to find a cheaper alternative for a tablet. Like I said earlier, a 'decent' device but in the end I am just going to pick up one of the 500 options in the future and be happy with it long term. Good luck.
