Can you use the strap on the back as a hand strap (as in, hold it without gripping with the fingers)? It seems sorta loose.

If so I'll pick that one over the other one. I like that it doesn't increase the size.

I dont think its "that" sturdy but I still think its a great case

I was reading that the strap was "heat treated on"

Ok what were my brothers thinking when getting this for my 68 year old mom. The thing is on 1 click payment and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get that off. I know she's going to easily make purchases she never meant to. Arghhhhh!
Also we put a $50 gc credit on her account but when we go to buy a book it mentions nothing about. It looks like its going to take it right from her cc instead. Double arghhhh!
Not sure if any one can help.

I think you have to log onto the actual Amazon.com site and turn off 1 click under her account settings.

The Verge is a heavy site. I have never had it work properly on the Fire's stock browser. I need to try it on an different one now that you mention it.

I'm having the problem where the stock Kindle Fire browser wants to open dozens of random tabs from my history.

I deleted all the browser data (through the global app menu, not just inside the browser) and started from a clean slate hoping that it had been fixed in a later revision of the browser and corrupted settings/data was still causing it. Worked for a while.

But it has come back, now, and I'm just going to use the beta of Dolphin Browser HD for my web stuff. Kind of annoying, since the default browser is just fine when it isn't doing this. :(

By the way, the Kindle Fire version of Dead Space is back on the Amazon App store. I didn't see it mentioned here, but since people griped when it was removed, I figured it was worth updating...

I'm having a weird issue where my Kindle isn't recognizing my Prime benefits even though I still get all the actual benefits when browsing the Amazon website. I first noticed this when it said one of my lending library books expired and it said it was because I no longer had Prime...

hey everyone. i got a kindle fire for christmas and really like it a lot. so i got a cable to hook it to my mac to transfer files to it and i get a message on the kindle screen that says "you can now transfer files from you computer to kindle..." but nothing pops up on my desktop like a harddrive or kindle anything. any ideas what i have to do? on an imac running 10.6.8

Is there a limit to how often you can send documents to your Kindle Fire via email? I've been sending a handful of files at a time but it takes a while for each to show up. Thoughts?

I don't think so.

I've been sending a handful of files at a time but it takes a while for each to show up. Thoughts?

That's normal. However, it would be faster if you don't use Amazon's service at all, you can send them as email attachment, or just sftp if your files are on a capable OS (mac/linux). The drawback is the docs won't show up on the "doc" shelf ( accessible by any 3rd party reader ), you need to either restart kindle or connect/disconnect through usb port.

Cool. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't something wrong.

Thinking about getting one of these to semi-replace the bedroom computer since that one doesn't get much use. I only have two concerns which seem like they're both workable skimming this thread and what I can find online, but can someone confirm?

1 - I'd want to be able to access videos and music on my local network but not the Kindle, but it appears that there are multiple apps that allow me to stream data on my network? I'd be streaming the content from either a Vista or Win7 PC. Also I was going to ask about .avi compatibility, but someone mentioned an app that will stream those?

2 - Can anyone confirm that twitch.tv (both live and archives) work fine on this thing? I'd probably use the shit out of it for livestreaming games.

A software update is out, 6.2.2. So far, it looks like the only difference is that you can view web pages in fullscreen on silk. Silk seems a tad bit snappier as well, but that could be a placebo.

Unless the bug is fixed where the browser keeps opening tabs from your history, I'm sticking with Dolphin HD 7.3 beta or whatever I have already. :p

BS player can stream from network shared windows drives, and can play avi file no problem.

That seems like a misleading headline. It should say something like "Amazon might make $136 per Kindle Fire over the course of three years if these surveys/guesses are accurate". The Fire was always a razor/blades-style loss leader. This isn't too surprising. I'll be interested to see how accurate this is after the device has some more time in the wild.

Bit the bullet and got a Kindle Fire today. Got BS Player loaded on it and seems to meet my streaming needs (plays all the files I checked just fine, etc). I do have a question about BS player which I'm fairly sure is me being an idiot though; is there a way to access just specific shared folders? I've got two computers set up on it through LAN with just their base IP, and I can access anything in the Public folders on those two computers no problem. But I can't seem to access any specific shared folders. So as an example if this is the directory path to a shared folder I have: \\Dell\Users\Daravon\Music what filepath do I enter to get that folder to pop in BS Player? I'm positive the folder is shared, and can confirm it as I have access to that folder on 360, etc. But trying to enter any specific filepaths usually get me access denied or other error messages, and going in through just the computer IP only shows the Default and Public folders, and the folder or username I'm looking for is nowhere to be found. I'm assuming I'm an idiot, does anyone have any suggestions? If nothing else I can just copy those folders to the Public folders, wouldn't be the end of the world or anything, just mildly annoying.

Also does anyone know of a good way to get twitch.tv streams running smoothly? I haven't messed with it much yet but streams seem choppy.

Dropped off my Fire for return today. It's a 'decent' product, but the more I used it the more there were little things that just kept pissing me off and taking away from my enjoyment. In the end I just didn't feel happy with what I'd spent my money on. Thank god for Amazon's return policy.

So I'm back to just my touchpad. Here's hoping the next iteration of the Fire is a good improvement.

For $200 I bought into the family.

It's exactly what i expected it to be. A 7" media consumption device that I can use to send/receive email.

Happy with my purchase.

So I'm seriously considering getting one of these. I'm doing a bit of travelling here in the near future and would like something a bit more convenient for reading, watching movies and listening to music than hauling out my laptop every time I get bored on the plane or in the car.

I really don't think a $600 tablet is called for here. I just need something for portable media other than using my cell the whole time. I'm pretty sure a Kindle Fire would work. Does anyone see any problems with my thinking/logic here? Is this a better product for my purposes than a low-end tablet, or the $250 Nook? (CNet reviews didn't really help me at all here, haha.)

It operates perfectly for me with the way you're describing. It's great for traveling. I was watching Endurance Runs from GiantBomb while waiting in an airport in Ecuador. Loved it.

You can just share the "music" folder directly. In that way, it will be visible at the first level right under the ip address.

As a bonus it is a great comic reader

Already there.

Daredevil issues 300-325
Thor (about 10 issues)
Eye of the World Graphic Novel

...plus the comics X stuff. Very good reader.

Plus Calibre is probably the greatest Fire companion ever for converting those 200+ epud books I've got.

The only issue I may have with the Fire moving forward will be it's weight. It does everything I want it to do (it's only limitation being available apps at this time) and I like it's interface (LOVE black as the default color scheme)...but it's a heavy device to only be 7".

I have no doubt that I'm going to get $200 value out of it within the first few months though. It's my only portable computing device...and I'm content.

Well, Samsung's 7inch Tab weights 380g VS. Fire's 413g. For 8.7% increase on weight, Fire gives you 10% extra battery capacity ( 4000mah VS. 4400mah). Does that information make you feel better:)

I don't find the fire particularly heavy and I get good battery life out of it. Also, I'm perfectly comfortable with using it at the dimmest brightness (which I think is still too bright).

I hold it in one hand constantly and only set it in the landscape orientation when watching videos.

how is the screen size for reading comics? it seems kind of small, but I would much rather give my money to amazon than apple, but i've heard great things about the ipad for comics. also what is the best tablet comic reading app?

Yeah same here. There are apps that dim the screen further (I'm using Screen Filter) though they don't give better battery life

Couldn't survive without it. Dunno what they were thinking with such a brightest minimum

Bought a book - Vortex, sequel to Spin and in white text on black, both text and background are black. Weird bug. Anyone seen this? I thought it was an os or app feature, not doc related.

You can double tap a comic you are reading to go into a "panel by panel" mode where each panel is individually zoomed into (with smooth transitions that mirror the path your eyes would follow on the page). You advance to the next panel by swiping across the screen or tapping the right edge of the screen.

It's similar to the PSP comic app's panel-by-panel view (if you ever used that).

Maybe I missed this in the instructions somewhere, but is there a way to change the wallpapers that appear when the the fire goes into sleep/lock mode. You know, when that yellow horizontal ribbon is on the screen and you have to slide it to unlock.

I want to load custom images for that.

I think you have to root the device to change that. I like the images and they seem to be adding some new ones periodically (or maybe my Fire just never used some for the first month that I had it). I can understand why people would want to change this, though. Especially people that have multiple devices under the same roof.

I found the both the video quality and performance of the two main streaming apps I used (Netflix and Amazon) to be disappointing. I knew the resolution would be lower, but it bothered me more than I thought it would. And then I'd get weird things like audio syncing issues from time to time. I also found the sound quality kind of poor. Tried two different pairs of headphones I have and for video the sound never was very good. The music I listened to seem to be an improvement though.

Amazon Music player integration is great and works very very well.

Navigation is pretty simple and straightforward - which is great. The 'carousel' is just awkward, though at least they updated it to where you could actually remove things from it, so that's a plus. But even then it just seems...obtrusive. I don't know. Hard to explain.

Comics are pretty great, though to be honest I found myself wondering how much better the 10" screen would be once I really got into them. Still far from a dealbreaker though, I bought about two or three graphic novels through Amazon as well and the process is as smooth as a Kindle should be.

Battery life is so-so. Even just reading seems to give it a pretty good workout. I understand why, but still a little jarring.

App Store (or at least Amazon's layout for the Amazon App Store) sucked badly. I know there were some good apps in there (usually phone apps, but still) but I'd have to search for them because Amazon sure as hell didn't want you to find them. Just terrible implementation for finding and suggesting apps.

Now, keep in mind, lots of this could get addressed by updates possibly, so there's that. And really, if you want to stay at this price point you don't have a lot of options. I wish the 250-300 ICS tablets were actually available because I feel those would probably be the best options at that price. As it is, I'd say go to a Barnes and Noble and a Best Buy or something and really play around with a Nook Tablet and Fire. One of those will have to be your best option right now.

Personally, I was trying to find a cheaper alternative for a tablet. Like I said earlier, a 'decent' device but in the end I am just going to pick up one of the 500 options in the future and be happy with it long term. Good luck.

Considering grabbing one of these since I have $65 in Amazon credit to blow and have been looking for a portable media consumption device. Couple of quick Qs:

- What are you guys getting in terms of real world battery times when watching videos? Preferably your own videos with wi-fi off.
- How is the screen durability? Shouldn't have to worry about the screen getting scratched and foggy from general cleaning with a microfiber right?
- How is audio quality for music/videos (Loaded off the device, not streamed)? Not expecting an audiophile device, but are there any glaring issues like popping, etc...?
- Has some of the sluggishness that was talked about in early reviews been cleaned up via the firmware updates?
- Vyer, when you talk about video quality being disappointing is the strictly in terms of streaming? Or is the video quality disappointing even if you convert your own high quality video file and put it on the fire?

Thanks guys!

Sorry, I never got around to converting my own video, so I was talking specifically about streaming. I believe the resolution of the screen is 1024x600, but I'm sure anything you load is going to be better than the streaming app obviously.

Also, I still found the browser sluggish at times, but the UI was never really bad. There would be a few hitches here and there, and I did have it lock up twice, but in general moving between sections of the UI was generally ok. Not blazing fast in any way, but tolerable.

Screen durability wasn't an issue for me, though I tried to take care of it. It seemed pretty sturdy, and a microfiber swipe did no damage to mine.

To get my mp4s to play, I have to use the Gallery app. Annoying that they do not show up in the Video section. Even worse is that the Gallery plays all movies at the same resolution regardless of whether the source is widescreen or full screen.

Just saw this. So if I put a 4:3 movie of my own on it then it'll distort it? :(

So Apple has been pretty vocal about it's success despite the success of the Fire during the holiday season.

I'd love to know how the ipod Touch sold over the holiday.

I gave mine to my daughter because I knew I was going to pick up the Fire. All I need now is a $50 shuffle and I won't miss the touch at all.

I know...different markets.
