I don't know. The resolution jump isn't that huge, from 1024x600 to 1280x800 for the 7" model. The bottomline is I am pretty happy with what it can do now ( media consumption and casual gaming), really don't see the need for an upgrade. And I certainly don't need a bigger or heavier one.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
What I really hope is that they add some physical buttons to the Fire. I don't like not having a physical volume key on it for example.
I would love to have that "upgrade", but does it worth $200?

Bought one in the spur of a moment since it was $139 but haven't really kept up with what's been going on with the Kindle Fire. I'm buying it for my little girl who is just about 1 now. I'm sure she's too young for it now, but around 1 and a half to 2 years old she'll probably be able to interact with it more.
I figure it's cheap so if she breaks it no big deal compared to an iPad, small enough to fit her size and I have 30 days to return if it doesn't look like it's going to work out.
Did I buy it too soon? Is the content fitting for a young kid or is a Nook Color/Tablet better? Is neither of these worth it compared to the wealth of content available on the iPad? Anyone have experience with letting their kids use one?

I couldn't resist the $140 refurb deal considering it still has the 1-year warranty. A coworker is letting me borrow his and I'm liking it so far. I'm not really in the market for a full blown tablet, I just want something to use when I feel like kicking back on the couch/bed and don't want my laptop roasting my nuts or something to use in the crapper and it seems like it's just the right size for that.
You know what, you maybe on to something. The netflix and youtube (HD) playback have been smoother for me, which may be the results of the increased performance. On the other hand, the Kindle fire feels noticeable warmer now, annoying side effect

They don't call it the Fire for nothin am I right??? Seriously I am interested in this tablet it seems to do 90% of what I would want a tablet for.
Picked up two fires today, My wife had been on the fence about buying one for about 2 weeks now and at 139$ we couldn't pass it up. I have a 1st gen iPad that I really love for PDF's but its awkward for me to use for anything else. How does the kindle handle comics? I don't expect much PDF support but how has your guys experience been? For those of you that have rooted or done custom roms, what is your setup?

I'm an iPad user and played with someone else's Fire and thought it was good enough and not a bad little toy. Now thinking of getting my girlfriend one as she doesn't need an iPad but only emails/web surfs.
How is the Facebook chat on it? Is there a special app for FB on the fire? Anyone have any major complaints I should know buying it for a non-techy girlfriend who really doesn't care?
edit: what about divx? Can it play files or stream from a media center?

I googled it a bit and didn't find solid answers. I'm using AirVideo for the iPad, what app will she need for the Fire?
BS player. It can play most video formats, locally or shared online.

Unfortunately, Amazon is stupid enough to exclude a lot of wonderful apps for whatever reasons. Good thing is you can find the application package (APK) and sideload it.
So, we have a three year-old, she has had an iPod touch since she was around one and a half, and what she likes the most is Netflix and drawing apps. They have both of those on the fire as well, so your kid will probably like it. The one disadvantage is the size, with the touch she can lay down and hold it up and run with it, but the fire might be a little heavy.
Still, in my experience, I would say go ahead. They have tons of free books, including kids books, the screen is bigger and it does what kids want.

This is the kind of thing that turns me off from the Fire and may make me look elsewhere. My girlfriend needs it to be simple and to just work.
Air Video isn't exactly simple or just-work (TM). Setting it up is much more involved (hardware and software) than sideloading BS Player.
I mean, I get your point, but just saying...
This is pretty simple. I brought one for my gf, and she loves it. Anything that needs to be sideload, it's as easy as finding the link, and pressing download.
Got my fire today, It immediately updated to the latest firmware. None of my books have covers now and the 2 apps I have downloaded and put down in the favorites shelf are grey squares now. My wife's fire is still on the old firmware and seems to be working awesome. Anyone else have these issues?

Are amazon children's books interactive? I remember Barnes and Noble was pimping that feature pretty hard for their children's ebooks on the nook tablet. I have a little brother who's the same age and he would probably love a device like this.
I don't know about the book section, but there are a few apps that are story telling books, and interactive.

Yup. Just search the web for the APK link, install the APK, and it will work just fine. Certain apps wont work, simply because the Fire uses Android 2.3.
The only time I needed a computer, was when I rooted it.
So I oredered my Kindle Fire yesterday, should be here today. Pretty excited, I know the Kindle 2 (?) may be out soonish but I have been on the border of ordering this device for a few months now and finally pulled the trigger, so I don't think I'll regret not waiting a few more months or whatever for the next one.

Gave the Kindle Fire a second chance, after being underwhelmed with it at launch. The new software runs MUCH better and the overall experience is greatly improved!

Picked up my first tablet (kindle fire) the other day, i was hesistant at first because of the size of the screen and the limited space you get on the device (no room to expand the memory? come on amazon *tisk tisk*) but i friggin love this thing.
That's why i went with the fire, i refuse to pay $600 for a tablet, the fire does what i need it to do.
I really hope the fire 2 comes with a bigger screen but i don't want them to compromise the price, stick at $199, or maybe a $249 model with more memory or something.

This is a good thread for android apps. But those suggestions are for apps on the market. You will have to track down the apk if you find any that interest you.
Also keep in mind, any tablet apps, won't work for the Fire. Since it is running 2.3.
Anyone serious about using Fire should root it and install the market. Just do it.
