My personal experiece with the Kindle Fire has been less than ideal.
On several different books I've had the next page load up as completely blank.
I have to exit out of the book once or twice before the actual page will load in.
Some of the games hitch and choke during play pretty horrendously.
Some of them even cause the speakers to emit a loud crackling sound.
Finally, why can't Amazon be bothered to put acutal page numbers on the books?
I understand changing fonts, letter size and margins will change the total page number, but even so, it feels wrong that they left out this feature.

There is soemthing wrong with yours. Send it back.

I'll copy-paste my comparison between Nook and Fire ( posted on XDA), if anyone is interested.

So I've had my Fire for about a week, last night I got a chance to play with a nook tablet. It was rooted, installed GO launcher and bunch of other apps. Here are some things I found out besides the HW specs differences.

1) Fire is much smoother. Hardware-wise, the surface of Fire is glass, while Nook's "feels like" plastic. Your finger can definitely feel the difference the moment you touch them. Software-wise, the browser on Fire scrolls better, esp. on some lengthy websites. (That's all done after it stopped loading, so Silk is not the reason.)

2) While nook has one more button than Fire's zero, Fire has three software button always there. Some apps like to use the back button as exit, which can be annoying on nook since you have to manually kill them in the launcher or nook home.

3) Nook has better compatibility with Android apps. On Fire, there is one video player crashes whenever I bring out the on-screen control. On Nook, it works just fine.

4) Pdf file shows better on Fire. I have a photography book (PDF) with some beautiful pictures. When viewed on nook, some of the color washed out, like on a 32k color screen. I tried different pdf reader ( build-in, adobe reader and one I can't remember, they are all the same. ) I don't think it's a hardware problem though, since JPEG pictures are almost identical on both devices, apart with a slightly different tint.

Nvidia Wins Processor Slot In Next Kindle Fire, Analyst Says?

Nvidia will supply the application processor in the second version of the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, Canaccord Genuity analyst Bobby Burleson asserts in a research note. He attributes the information to “conversations with sources in the tablet supply chain.”

Burleson says the next Fire is expected to have an 8.9-inch screen, larger than the current 7-inch version.

Nvidia’s win would be a loss for Texas Instruments, which provides a comparable part in the first-generation Fire. “Widely viewed as the only other successful tablet besides iPad/2, a win or loss in the next gen Fire could be seen as a proxy for TXN’s overall apps processor potential in higher-end tablets,” Burleson writes in a research note.

NVDA is up 62 cents, or 4.2% to $15.53.

For the past two weeks I've been fighting with all my force to control the impulse to buy a Kindle Fire. The way that I rationalize not buying it is that I already own a Kindle Touch and that I don't have Amazon Prime which would be the cheapest way to watch movies, shows, etc.

Now I ask you Kindle-GAF, why do I need a Kindle Fire? Sell me on it.

Wait for the next version. Maybe they'll iron the kinks out by then, and have stronger VOD offerings.

OMG, is that Joe Dempsie in your avatar? I thought he fell off the face of the earth after Skins. Glad I was wrong, he's immeasurably talented.

I like looking at the normal gaf colors!

If anyones knows or figures out how to see spoilers, it'd be highly appreciated. There's gotta be something better than quoting or copy-pasting to a note app.

Finally managed to download some stuff. Downloaded Perfect Viewer (for manga), Read It Later and Plants vs Zombies. I'm pretty stoked. It works really well.

What other things can I do with it offline? I tried video but the player was really bad even when I converted to mp4 (I sideloaded Moboplayer and it couldn't handle the video either).

Use Handbrake and use the iPad preset. I was able to get a 720p mp4 file to run on it perfectly.

mp4 and 720p +soft subtitles. I guess I'll try again tomorrow with what e_i said and see if it helps.

I would burn the subs using Handbrake. I've heard softsubs can be taxing on hardware. I took some anime mkvs, converted them to mp4 with the subs burned in and the video plays just fine in 720p. Remember to select the sub track in Handbrake and click 'Add.'

Yeah the videos work fine now. Thanks.

I was bummed that the Google Music app isn't available for the Fire. I tried sideloading it, and it works...but there's no way to sign in. Luckily, the browser works just fine with Google Music.

You need GoogleServicesFramework.apk in order to sign onto google services, just google it...there are plenty of sources.

I was reading a little bit about the sideloading apps.

How would it work if I used like a launcher like Launcher Pro or ADW?

the overlay on the fire is just a modified launcher by amazon. anything else should just replace it. i've seen people replace it with go launcher and i'm thinking of doing the same.

Tried reading on the beach today. Not great. Black on white was better than the reverse. But the grip was perfect. Still not sure about it, but was able to blast music from my amazon cloud, and check a reference in 1q84.

Bad enough that it would only be used as a last resort? I've been toying with the brown background and it seems to work well but I haven't had a real clear, sunny day to use it outside in a while.

Hmm, I've been getting excellent battery life, well over 6 hrs per charge I'd say. Brightness at around 80%, wifi on generally, not strictly books/magazines. So far I haven't figured out the c/p inside of a book, on something like a website its just a long press and moving the calipers around to encompass everything, then a tap for copy. And a long press to select paste.

I have a question that has been bugging for days about these new tablet devices/readers. How do you change the battery? At some point the thing is just going to die so you are going to be left off with a device that always needs to be connected or you have to send it to the manufactured and hope they are still supporting it. Have any of you given some thought to this problem?

I will have flipped mine for a new model long before that happens.

I'm expecting that even if I keep this model for say 3 years, that the battery will still at least last an hour. When that time comes I would either send in for a replacement battery or upgrade to the newer model. If, by some unbelievable stroke of mismanagement Amazon isn't around I guess I would have my first tablet to disassemble.

Also one of the great things about the actual Kindle is the battery life. Nobody wants to have to plug in a book every night.

So I've had mine for a few weeks now (pre-release beta device and a final release).

Dealing with having no buttons on the device is IMO a pain in the ass. Having to pop in and out of applications to lock rotation or change the volume is just not ideal.

I've had 2 instances where the device wouldn't start. This seems to be a fairly common occurrence and requires the 20-second key press reboot to resolve.

Battery life is a mixed bag. It seems to die a lot faster than I expect. Its nowhere near as incomprehensibly awful as the Blackberry Playbook - but it sucks all the same.

I am not a huge fan of the interface. Its not the Carousel interface that bothers me as it is that the whole interface just seems to be poorly designed from a usability perspective. Things just aren't in places that seem intuitive - except for alerts.

People say that the Nook is better for reading books, but I can't say that I can tell either way. I don't read a lot of .pdf as most of my content is actually purchased so its either already in epub or Kindle format.

The speakers on the Kindle seem to be in the most awkward place considering that you would be in landscape for most of the media functions of the device. Having them both on one side just seems wrong.

The web browser is pretty bad - best to find another one and use that.

On the feel front, it is definitely easier to carry and I feel more comfortable putting kids in front of that cheaper price point and lighter weight than I do with them sitting in front of an iPad2. But from a software perspective, the offerings are just annoyingly bad so I ended up picking up another iPad for the learning software options.

most awkward? How about a mono speaker away from the viewer? Please don't look at your precious iPad2...

How would a new launcher work with the "tap in the middle of the screen" to get back home or how do you naviagate around the kindle (I dont have mine yet, I will on Christmas though)

Gamasutra.
How often does Amazon add new apps/games to its store? I've been watching for a while now and Dabble is still the newest release. It's kind of nutty ... I'd expect new apps/games every week, but it seems slower than that. :(

Spent my first weekend with it. Every night I read comics before bed. Tried a book, but I much prefer my normal Kindle for that. Comics before bed in the dark = great. I'm content.

Posting this from my new Kindle Fire.

Seeing a comic in the Comixology app at the Best Buy display sold me on the purchase.
So far, so good.

I've been using my Fire a lot over the last couple weeks, and it has really grown on me. Reading, browsing, apps, all work very well. The only thing that is constantly pissing me off is how sometimes the home button menu refuses to pop up. Either the sensitivity is way off, or the thing is sneakily chugging up, but either way, that is the one thing I really want improved.

Been reading The Hunger Games and having a good time reading on my KF. Waiting for my paycheck on Thursday to pick up the first Kickass issue.

Saw this BGR link to a Fire usability review and had to laugh at all the ardent Fire fans ignorant of Jakob Nielsen's credentials. Even Nielsen's defenders in the comments don't realize how much he's done in the field. So much angst over what's mostly just a UX design issue, probably the easiest type of issue to resolve if Amazon just spends a little attention to UX.
