bitch I'm taking calls.
Anyone know the name of that movie where they have a headset that can record experiences like exactly what the wearer feels and then the next person can wear the headset and feel the same thing? Some suave handsome guy records himself banging a girl and a fat shy guy steals the headset and 'experiences' the orgasm part of the recorded clip over and over again?

Remember that episode when Barclay made Troy and Crusher into his sex fantasy?

Everyone's going to be having sex with celebrity look-alikes and video edits.

It begins

"At first it felt surreal and disconnected, but I timed myself to get off at the same time she did," said this person, who preferred to remain anonymous. "And suddenly, I came, and we had that moment of [exhausted breathing sounds]. She was breathing at the same time. And then she looked me in the eye and leaned in and said, 'I love you, baby.' I was like, 'Wow, that was amazing.' And then I realized I'd only had that experience with a few girlfriends in my life. That's when I realized this shit is crazy. To connect with a human you need so many things, and this achieved it almost immediately. This girl was there with me, and she recognized me, and she appreciated me."

No idea, but The general term for it is "Simsense", From Shadowrun. It's also been known as "Full-Dive VR". The scientific name for it is DNI, or Direct Neural Interfacing.

Basically Straight up Matrix shit.

"VR Porn" is gonna be a thing, sure, but you're not going to see birth rates drop or any of that shit until Simsense comes into fore, and I don't see that level of stuff happening until at least the 2040s.

Strange Days.

It's a great movie. An obvious relic of the late 90s though.

I tried it out too. Thought it was alright. Admittedly, Google Cardboard isn't the best VR experience. I'm sure it'd be better with Occulus, but that'll have to wait until the consumer version hits before I can share my opinion on that.

You know what really gonna be weird.... Actual fucking while wearing vr. The last word in bag over the head tech....

I also wonder if years from now we will create our pornatars so we look exactly how we want then you and your partner get tracked while youre fucking so you appear the way you want to to your partner. Or they appear to you how you want... Instead of me my gf sees gosling, or whoever.

This reminded me of the episode "The Entire History of You" on Black Mirror.
Couple banging while rewatching recorded memory of them banging from earlier in the relationship
. Relationships are gonna get a lot weirder with this tech that's for sure.

Screw VR porn. How long do you think it's going to take for governments to start using VR torture? Assuming it isn't already happening.

That last quote... It both sounds terrifying and amazing.

Before we put this to market, we should do testing on the psych and look for patterns in brain activity and rewiring of the brain.

If static normal 2D porn fucks so many people, I think it is important to try and figure out if this could do the same, or more.
Could you imagine if they banned VR porn? If it messed with us humans that much. A black market for porn would be kind of hilarious

Fuck yes, thank you. Was the first thing I thought of when I read the OP.

I think it's awesome science has a word for this, and thank you for the history of the terminology. Very interesting.

I agree with your projections too. The kind of disconnects the author of the Kotaku article describes will guarantee it stays niche for the time being at least in terms of porn. When we actually start getting into DNI then things are going to get crazy.

I just envisioned this scene in my head:

1) Give a prisoner some weak drugs to make him groggy, but with the majority of his senses intact (drugs would mask imperfections and make it a more nightmarish experience.)
2) Strap him in a chair and put a large fan in front of him.
3) Force him to watch a VR recording of being pushed out of the plane and hitting the ground, with the fan gradually speeding up to add extra effects.
4) Either take the headset off him before he hits the ground, or hit him in the face/body with a bat as he hits the ground.

Yeah, the CIA and their allies are going to have a field day with this.

Sounds baller up to the bat part, actually.

I think if there is going to be anything like VR torture, it might be more akin to sleep deprivation.

Loud sounds, disturbing lights and so on.

I see VR torture being nightmares being acted out in real life. VR could easily create scenarios reminiscent of night terrors - strap the victim down and the only interaction in the world is being able to move his head. And like I said in my previous post, drugs could be used on the victim in order to mask imperfections and to increase the dream-like effect.

Just read the synopsis of this actually, and it isn't the one I was thinking of. This is the one:

Brainstorm

"This video is not available in your country."

Shame, sounds like a good movie.

And you should be watching Strange Days. Embrace that 1990s vision of the "near future".

Make sure to say he didn't fly so good.

That movie is awesome, first heard about it over at the mtbs forums (where Palmer used to post pre-Oculus). Damn good mind fuckery scifi, also a good early Christopher Walken performance. There's one scene in there that's pretty terrifying and made me wonder if VR could ever do damage like that.

This is how I envision it. Just strap someone in, maybe use knowledge of their fears if you have it, and let it go on and on until they break.

I just don't think you need to be that convoluted to break someone.
It's not like anyone that can really resist effectively currently existing torture methods (waterboarding, electrocuting, etc) couldn't resist having virtual spiders crawl all over him or whatever.
You'd have to program all that shit, seems complicated, especially for something that they would have to do on the hush hush anyway.
