Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

If the rumors are true, I have no idea what they're doing with their stable of first/second party development. They closed a bunch of studios during the 360 generation, they apparently opened up a lot more, and now they're canceling or reworking titles? I just don't understand what they were thinking. You can't cobble together studios and give them two years or so to get things together and make software.

Its reminding me of what Nintendo did toward the tail-end of the GC generation. They cut ties with studios like Rare, Left Field, Silicon Knights and Factor 5 and instead opted to have tighter relationships with 3rd parties like Namco and Sega to fill in those software gaps.

That turned out well for them, lol.

I think it will need much longer for new AAA IP from a brand new studio. Firstly you have no concept at all. Most studios using some of the current resources from the past projects on the next project.
Even exist IP can take quite long time, See at Eat Sleep Play - opened 2007 but first big AAA on early 2012.

I'm also vehemently against third party exclusives. I think the entire practice is garbage. It's bad for gamers in the end. I also think that the risk of a third party springing for one company is a dangerous decision given the fickle nature of the industry.

Role reversal? How can it be!

The cockiness/arrogance/curse of 3rd console continues!

This definitely seems to be the nature of the beast. That doesn't bode well for Sony though until PS5 if they get there since the 4th console has traditionally been the "all the right ideas but too late to recover" if Dreamcast/Gamecube are counted as respective 4ths.

Why not? Third Party Exclusives were the bread & butter of the PS2.

How is a third party exclusive different than any other exclusive?

So are you only against them here? Or you know, in all cases. Because Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all do it.

I think it stifles creativity. Big companies start to think, "Why develop projects when I can simply have other companies do my creative heavy lifting for me?"

It's a title that would have been made available to a broad group of people that was locked up financially and in turn turned into a niche title. You either own the console it's on or you don't. The more people that can play it the better.

Against it in every case. Gears, Insomniac games, Metal Gear 4, etc. should have been multi platform titles last generation.

Don't you mean Halo 2?

Is it really a problem if it's shown more than a year before? I mean, the general gist I get from reading this thread is that it's cool to show bullshit unless it's just a few months before release. At least, the impression I have is that people feel it's fine if Sony does it.

You do realize developing for other platforms is not free, right? You need additional manpower, money, time, etc.

you don't always earn that back, and honestly the developer may not even want to dev for those other platforms in the first place.

It'll be very interesting to see how things play out if this turns out to be true. I don't think they'll be willing to delay and let the PS4 have its first holiday season all to itself.

Didn't they do exactly that with 343i though?

If these rumors are to be believed then it seems like Sony transitioned their studios into PS4 development a lot more ceaselessly than Microsoft has done with Durango.

It's also confirmation that MS are not nearly as anti-gaming as some people have convinced themselves. I think that's pretty much the only silver lining at this point.

But you'd think it would be the other way around due to the completely different architecture that's in the PS4 compared to the PS3.

Ease of development. The sad truth of the matter is that the Cell was a nightmare to develop for and it kept their devs on their toes. Sucker Punch, Guerilla, Santa Monica, etc. are probably kissing Cerny's feet right now.

I don't buy the argument that a Durango delay would spell disaster for Microsoft. They'd still have a majority of the NA marketshare, I feel. They'd likely be dead in Europe and Japan from the very start, however.

Not exactly like what was shown in the reveal (scanning a real object to use it in a game) tho but I guess the idea is the same. Maybe kinect 2.0 fully realize the potential

Yes, it is not exactly like the original trailer, but it show it is possible. But Kinect is really limited by the hardware console (even USB speed).

Yeah it is kind of do or die for them right now.

Considering the PS3 launch from a software perspective and the 360's from a hardware perspective -- I feel they both should do well this time around. Those were big mistakes that they both should learn from. The heat rumor is concerning, but I bet Microsoft handles it.

Why would they be dead in Europe? When they have been competitive all gen?

Next gen if MS plays it's cards right they will continue to win NA and still be successful in Europe.

The difference is they actually could gain more ground in all regions that even the 360 was not able to accopmlish.

They will, 1.23TFLOPS & 8GB of RAM is a lot in a closed box the games will look good anyone expecting the games not to look good are crazy.

I've been saying this for a while, especially when the whole secret sauce rumors came crumbling down. I would not be surprised if the stuff MS showed on the 21st looks better than the PS4 footage from February because of the extra few months of work.

They will most certainly have things ironed out in time for launch.

honestly, there is no reason for multiple games to be late by 6 months... makes no sense at all.... it has nothing to do with technology as games were developed on Windows to start with anyway, and if they cant extract enough performance, they can lower the graphics.

it also has nothing to do with hardware being late or not, at all... those two are not connected.

The secret sauce IS deep pockets.

Well, most things have been made, even scanning objects.

Can you actually talk to in-game characters? Have your buddy or whoever get up and change your tire in a racing game? Not to my knowledge. Not to mention that the Natal in that reveal trailer is picking up the most subtle gestures which Kinect never came close to recognizing.

"USE YOUR OWN GEAR" is one of the main features mentioned in the trailer. Sure you can scan objects. But then use them in a meaningful way in the game? Hardly.

I don't know how anyone could claim that this video accurately represented Kinect.
